Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Triangular Society: Leaves From the Life of a Portland Family That cat became the bane of the family, the staple Of discontented converse. Even the mother, who dotes on dumb things, and deifies Mr. Bergh, was Often heard to say, after some season of unusual trial, I declare, I wish there were some instantaneous and merciful way of killing a eat. If I hire a boy to kill her, he will torture her; if I turn her away, she will be abused and starved; if I keep her, she will wear the life out of me. She is a perfect elephant! This last position was strenuously combated by Bobby, who intimated that she had no trunk but he was promptly snubbed by Brunette, who remarked, I Wish she had a trunk, I 'd put her into it and send her Off by express this afternoon, with C. O. D. On the cover, meaning Carry her Off and Drown her. Only Bob remained her friend; chie y, no doubt, because he never had any work to do for her. Download or read book How to Escape from the Diabolic Triangle written by J. Berting and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In these postmodern times, we are bombarded with rumours, allegations of conspiracies and revelations about the real, but hidden objectives of powerful interest groups. We cannot live without collective representations. They are inside us, as part of our covert culture. But the observation that they are a substantial part of our life also requires us to be very attentive to their important and partly unconscious negative role. Although these representations are often useful, they can also be misleading and dangerous. In this publication, Dr. Jan Berting presents the disjunction phenomenon. He analyses nine cases, treating the disjunction between a collective representation of society and the role of reality in different ways"--P. [4] of cover.

Book The Triangle Fire Protocols Of Peace

Download or read book The Triangle Fire Protocols Of Peace written by Richard Greenwald and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America searched for an answer to "The Labor Question" during the Progressive Era in an effort to avoid the unrest and violence that flared so often in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In the ladies' garment industry, a unique experiment in industrial democracy brought together labor, management, and the public. As Richard Greenwald explains, it was an attempt to "square free market capitalism with ideals of democracy to provide a fair and just workplace." Led by Louis Brandeis, this group negotiated the "Protocols of Peace." But in the midst of this experiment, 146 mostly young, immigrant women died in the Triangle Factory Fire of 1911. As a result of the fire, a second, interrelated experiment, New York's Factory Investigating Commission (FIC)—led by Robert Wagner and Al Smith—created one of the largest reform successes of the period. The Triangle Fire, the Protocols of Peace, and Industrial Democracy in Progressive Era New York uses these linked episodes to show the increasing interdependence of labor, industry, and the state. Greenwald explains how the Protocols and the FIC best illustrate the transformation of industrial democracy and the struggle for political and economic justice.

Book Japan and the Growth Equity Small Government Impossible Triangle

Download or read book Japan and the Growth Equity Small Government Impossible Triangle written by Jun Saito and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines and analyzes the current situation of, and the future prospects for, the Japanese economy, particularly in the context of inequality. The country's economy is facing the ageing and the shrinking of its population, both of which will reduce the potential growth rate, which has already become very low. By introducing a new policy framework, namely the `Equity-Growth-Small Government Impossible Triangle', based on reviewing, comparing and contrasting the policies of the United States, the Nordic economies and Japan, the book proposes a policy direction that could be pursued by Japan. If Japan wants to sustain growth while preventing inequality to widen and preserve an egalitarian society, there is no other choice but to further promote globalization and innovation and, at the same time, surrender preserving a small government by reforming itself to become a dynamic and resilient welfare state. The volume will be an invaluable resource for students, professionals and researchers with an interest in economics, inequality, the Japanese economy and comparative economic policies.
