Download or read book Teen Spirit written by Paul Howe and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teen Spirit offers a novel and provocative perspective on how we came to be living in an age of political immaturity and social turmoil. Award-winning author Paul Howe argues it's because a teenage mentality has slowly gripped the adult world. Howe contends that many features of how we live today—some regrettable, others beneficial—can be traced to the emergence of a more defined adolescent stage of life in the early twentieth century, when young people started spending their formative, developmental years with peers, particularly in formal school settings. He shows how adolescent qualities have slowly seeped upward, where they have gradually reshaped the norms and habits of adulthood. The effects over the long haul, Howe contends, have been profound, in both the private realm and in the public arena of political, economic, and social interaction. Our teenage traits remain part of us as we move into adulthood, so much so that some now need instruction manuals for adulting. Teen Spirit challenges our assumptions about the boundaries between adolescence and adulthood. Yet despite a cultural system that seems to be built on the ethos of Generation Me, it's not all bad. In fact, there has been an equally impressive rise in creativity, diversity, and tolerance within society: all traits stemming from core components of the adolescent character. Howe's bold and suggestive approach to analyzing the teen in all of us helps make sense of the impulsivity driving society and encourages us to think anew about civic reengagement.

Book Dear Morgan God Doesn t Hate You Because You re Gay

Download or read book Dear Morgan God Doesn t Hate You Because You re Gay written by Metanoia Spirit and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if you couldn’t have sex with your partner, would it matter? Do you think you could still love and be with him or her? What if biblical scriptures could reveal a hidden view of what it means to be accepted for who and what we are as spirits having a human experience? Would it help ease the intense hatred toward individuals whose calling in life involves their sexual identity? Dear Morgan, God Doesn’t Hate You Because You’re Gay, by author Metanoia Spirit, deals with this issue. Morgan, who is a lesbian, is the author’s friend. Or she was until her sexuality came between them, and Morgan ends their friendship. Spirit misses her friendship, so he writes this book in the form of a letter. He shares with Morgan bible scriptures to explain why he believes the way he does and explain that God doesn’t hate her because of her lifestyle, despite what some people say. This letter is not only to Morgan. It is also for those whose lives are filled with confusion about God’s unconditional love for them. The scriptural evidence shared in Dear Morgan, God Doesn’t Hate You Because You’re Gay is substantial, but not everyone will see it even though it’s right in front of them.

Book Spirits and Animism in Contemporary Japan

Download or read book Spirits and Animism in Contemporary Japan written by Fabio Rambelli and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws attention to a striking aspect of contemporary Japanese culture: the prevalence of discussions and representations of “spirits” (tama or tamashii). Ancestor cults have played a central role in Japanese culture and religion for many centuries; in recent decades, however, other phenomena have expanded and diversified the realm of Japanese animism. For example, many manga, anime, TV shows, literature, and art works deal with spirits, ghosts, or with an invisible dimension of reality. International contributors ask to what extent these are cultural forms created by the media for consumption, rather than manifestations of “traditional” ancestral spirituality in their adaptations to contemporary society. Spirits and Animism in Contemporary Japan considers the modes of representations and the possible cultural meanings of spirits, as well as the metaphysical implications of contemporary Japanese ideas about spirits. The chapters offer analyses of specific cases of “animistic attitudes” in which the presence of spirits and spiritual forces is alleged, and attempt to trace cultural genealogies of those attitudes. In particular, they present various modes of representation of spirits (in contemporary art, architecture, visual culture, cinema, literature, diffuse spirituality) while at the same time addressing their underlying intellectual and religious assumptions.

Book L Auberge espagnole

Download or read book L Auberge espagnole written by Ben McCann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part romantic comedy, part sitcom, part social drama, L’Auberge espagnole (The Spanish Apartment) recounts a familiar ‘youth’ ritual – the move from university to ‘the real world’, the often complicated personal, romantic and cultural encounters that ensue, and the moral uncertainties that characterize that key biological and physiological developmental stage between adolescence and adulthood. French director Cédric Klapisch showcases the extraordinary colour and beauty of Barcelona’s architecture, and places his hero Xavier at the heart of this smartly written film, which makes a series of wry observations on educational exchange programmes, multi-culturalism, and the direction European youth might take in the twenty-first century. This book addresses the topic of Europe’s youth generation, paying particular attention to the ways in which the film depicts the transition from adolescence to adulthood as allegory for the experiences of European society as it moves through periods of readjustment towards uncertain futures. It also looks into the ecosystem of contemporary French cinema, the Erasmus programme and its influence on youth experience, and identity politics in relation to ‘nationhood’ and ‘European-ness’. The book also examines the two sequels to the film – Russian Dolls (2005) and Chinese Puzzle (2013) – and how the complications faced by the main characters across the trilogy suggest that the move to adulthood is a never-ending process of growing up and reaching a level of self-actualization.

Book excerpt: Even with the cutthroat days of being Class Mom behind her, as a freshly minted mat mom of the Pioneer Middle School (PMS) wrestling team, Jen Dixon cannot catch a break. This year, as her son joins the ranks of the PMS wrestlers, Jen faces mystifying new social dynamics with her trademark combination of reluctance and resigned acceptance. The sights and smells of her son’s wrestling matches are more than enough for her to deal with, but Jen also finds herself fully immersed in sports-mom competitiveness. These parents all seem perfectly unassuming until their kids start to wrestle, and then some become raging momsters. Jen steels herself for the indignities of middle school life, but she cannot quite fathom the extents to which some kids (and moms) will go for the sweet taste of victory. Add to this some truly bizarre encounters with students from her spin class and deeper challenges managing her parents, and Jen has more gum than she can chew...and even her riotously funny one-liners might not get her through it this time.

Book Spiritual Truths and Experiences of Life after Death

Download or read book Spiritual Truths and Experiences of Life after Death written by Gert Niemand and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the information in this book came from Angels and Spiritual Masters, who are living in the greater World of Spirit. Therefore, I would like to thank all the Angels and Masters who came down to do their work for God in Love and with Love, and all their helpers, who helped me to fulfill an oath I made. During an out of the body experience, while standing at Mountain Zion in the Presence of God, I promised Him that I would tell all the people the truth about Him and His Spiritual Messengers, the Angels and other life in the Spirit World. All the Angels and Masters spoken to have nothing but Love for God, their fellows spirits, all of Mankind and the Animal Kingdom. Life as we know it, continuo after death in a slightly different format, and regardless of what we say or believe every one of us knows deep in our inner being that we came from the world of spirit, and we knows deep inside ourselves that that world is real, and that we must one day return to it. Regardless of what we say or believe, we know within ourselves about the Presence of God! I have used most of these short stories as talks during church services, because Angels advised me what to write down, and to use what they have shown me in the world of spirit, as the talk. Therefore, most of the information in this book is from spiritual beings, they are the real authors of this book. I am just an instrument used by them as a voice box in the wilderness of Babel', to explain some of the wonderful stories we read of in the bible. In this way am I also complying with the vow I made to God.

  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Youth Culture in China written by Paul Clark and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives and aspirations of young Chinese (those between 14 and 26 years old) have been transformed in the past five decades. By examining youth cultures around three historical points - 1968, 1988 and 2008 - this book argues that present-day youth culture in China has both international and local roots. Paul Clark describes how the Red Guards and the sent-down youth of the Cultural Revolution era carved out a space for themselves, asserting their distinctive identities, despite tight political controls. By the late 1980s, Chinese-style rock music, sports and other recreations began to influence the identities of Chinese youth, and in the twenty-first century, the Internet offers a new, broader space for expressing youthful fandom and frustrations. From the 1960s to the present, this book shows how youth culture has been reworked to serve the needs of the young Chinese.
