Book The Trials of Eric Mareo

Download or read book The Trials of Eric Mareo written by Charles Ferrall and published by Victoria University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When flamboyant musician Eric Mareo was convicted twice in 1936 of murdering his actress wife, Thelma, most New Zealanders believed that justice had been served. But a few were not so sure, including the second trial judge and the Crown's overseas medical expert. Moreover, the Crown's star witness, the dancer Freda Stark, had been having an affair with the dead woman. Why did the vast majority of New Zealanders believe in Mareo's guilt when the scientific evidence was so weak and the Crown's case depended on a person who, by the standards of the day, would have been called a 'sexual pervert'? In the answer to this question lies an insight into the social mores of New Zealanders during the Depression, and perhaps beyond. The trials of Eric Moreo were a social drama that caught the conscience of a people."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Bringing to life the musical worlds of New Zealanders both at home and out on the town, this history chronicles the evolution of popular music in New Zealand during the 20th century. From the kiwi concert parties during World War I and the arrival of jazz to the rise of swing, country, the Hawaiian sound, and then rock'n'roll, this musical investigation brings to life the people, places, and sounds of a world that has disappeared and uncovers how music from the rest of the world was shaped by Maori and Pakeha New Zealanders into a melody, rhythm, and voice that made sense on these islands.

Book Burma Kipling and Western Music

Download or read book Burma Kipling and Western Music written by Andrew Selth and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, scholars have been trying to answer the question: how was colonial Burma perceived in and by the Western world, and how did people in countries like the United Kingdom and United States form their views? This book explores how Western perceptions of Burma were influenced by the popular music of the day. From the First Anglo-Burmese War of 1824-6 until Burma regained its independence in 1948, more than 180 musical works with Burma-related themes were written in English-speaking countries, in addition to the many hymns composed in and about Burma by Christian missionaries. Servicemen posted to Burma added to the lexicon with marches and ditties, and after 1913 most movies about Burma had their own distinctive scores. Taking Rudyard Kipling’s 1890 ballad ‘Mandalay’ as a critical turning point, this book surveys all these works with emphasis on popular songs and show tunes, also looking at classical works, ballet scores, hymns, soldiers’ songs, sea shanties, and film soundtracks. It examines how they influenced Western perceptions of Burma, and in turn reflected those views back to Western audiences. The book sheds new light not only on the West’s historical relationship with Burma, and the colonial music scene, but also Burma’s place in the development of popular music and the rise of the global music industry. In doing so, it makes an original contribution to the fields of musicology and Asian Studies.

Book Crime Regulation and Control During the Blitz

Download or read book Crime Regulation and Control During the Blitz written by Peter Adey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime, Regulation and Control during the Blitz looks at the social effect of bombing on urban centres like Liverpool, Coventry and London, critically examining how the wartime authorities struggled to regulate and control crime and offending during the Blitz. Focusing predominantly on Liverpool, it investigates how the authorities and citizens anticipated the aerial war, and how the State and local authorities proposed to contain and protect a population made unruly, potentially deviant and drawn into a new landscape of criminal regulation. Drawing on a range of contemporary sources, the book throws into relief today's experiences of war and terror, the response in crime and deviancy, and the experience and practices of preparedness in anticipation of terrible threats. The authors reveal how everyday activities became criminalised through wartime regulations and explore how other forms of crime such as looting, theft and drunkenness took on a new and frightening aspect. Crime, Regulation and Control during the Blitz offers a critical contribution to how we understand crime, security, and regulation in both the past and the present.

Book Law Breakers and Mischief Makers

Download or read book Law Breakers and Mischief Makers written by Bronwyn Sell and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-11-29 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand was supposed to be a model society at the end of the world, a utopia for 'men and women of good character' who were willing to work hard for a better life. And, for most, so it proved. But this book is about the others - the misfits, the swindlers, the fallen women, the love rats, the escaped convicts, the hoaxers, the charlatans, the highwaymen, the mass murderers - from the earliest days of European settlement to the present day. Law Breakers and Mischief Makers gives the scandalous details of those who've made a name for themselves in New Zealand for all the wrong reasons. Take for example, Charlotte Badger, a pistol-wielding English thief who launched a mutiny on a Tasmanian convict ship in 1806 and sailed over to hide among the Maori of the Bay of Islands, and Amy Bock, a con woman who masqueraded as a wealthy man to marry the daughter of her landlady in 1909.Some of the people featured in this book are monsters, some are merely rascals, but all make fascinating reading. A lot of the people featured in it have somewhat disappeared into the mists of time and readers will be surprised at the shady characters in this country's past.

Book excerpt: Contemporary theories about oral history as well as practical strategies for conducting oral history research are included in this collection of essays. General issues that arise during oral history research are covered in detail, including navigating confidentiality issues, transcribing from oral interviews to written form, and handling unique situations for populations such as indigenous peoples whose history may not have been recorded previously. Particular case studies highlight the rewards and challenges of documenting oral histories and offer insight into the kinds of marginalized experiences that can find voice through this research: productions of an amateur dramatic society, stories from a victim of child abuse, and the life stories of two lesbians.
