This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a biography of a man named Samuel Rice, who served as a colonel in World War I, fighting on behalf of the British Empire. The author describes Rice as a dedicated officer who devoted his entire career to the 51st Regiment. He joined the regiment first as an ensign and served with them until 1831, holding the position of commander for the last 14 years. He embodies a type of soldier who was not uncommon in the early 19th century and who lived for their regiment, placing their duty and the reputation of their regiment above all else. They were not concerned with personal recognition or glory, and were content to work diligently behind the scenes to maintain the high standards of their beloved regiment.

Download or read book World War I in Mesopotamia written by Nadia Atia and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mesopotamian campaign during World War I was a critical moment in Britain's position in the Middle East. With British and British Indian troops fighting in places which have become well-known in the wake of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, such as Basra, the campaign led to the establishment of the British Mandate in Iraq in 1921. Nadia Atia believes that in order to fully understand Britain's policies in creating the nascent state of Iraq, we must first look at how the war shaped Britons' conceptions of the region. Atia does this through a cultural and military history of the changing British perceptions of Mesopotamia since the period before World War I when it was under Ottoman rule. Drawing on a wide variety of historical and literary sources, including the writing of key figures such as Gertrude Bell, Mark Sykes and Arnold Wilson, but focusing mainly on the views and experiences of ordinary men and women whose stories and experiences of the war have less frequently been told, Atia examines the cultural and social legacy of World War I in the Middle East and how this affected British attempts to exert influence in the region.

Download or read book Semiramis A Tale of Battle and of Love written by Edward Peple and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiramis: A Tale of Battle and of Love is a play by Edward People. Excerpt: "The existing history of Assyria's greatest ruler, Semiramis, is so confounded with the religions and superstitions of the ancients that little or no authentic fact may be gleaned therefrom. Again, these legends were handed down from father to son among the Syrians and imaginative Persians, till finally recorded by the more imaginative Greeks. These latter gentlemen seemed seldom to allow mere truth to stand as a stumbling block in their literary paths, but leaped it nimbly for the entertainment of an admiring world."
