Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not many of us can claim to have dipped our handkerchiefs in Charles I's blood after his execution, or to have watched Vesuvius erupt, but that's about to change... Wyllie, Acton & Goldblatt's Time Travel Handbook offers eighteen exceptional trips to the past, transporting you back to the greatest spectacles in history. We offer the chance to join Henry VIII at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, and to march on Versailles with the revolutionary women of Paris. You can sail with Captain Cook to Tahiti and Australia, and spend time at Xanadu with Marco Polo and Kubla Khan. Or, closer to the present, you might accompany Charlie Parker at the birth of bebop or The Beatles in Hamburg, and take part in the VE Day celebrations in London or the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The notable authors and time travel agents, Wyllie, Acton & Goldblatt are your guide to these and other unmissable events, charting the action as it will unfold, and advising on local customs, and what to wear, eat and drink, for the most authentic of experiences. Forget museums, forget history books - the only way to do history is to live it.

In her riveting memoir, Susan recounts her struggle to be the perfect traditional "Chinese" wife to her increasingly controlling and abusive husband. With keen insight and heart-wrenching candor, she confronts the hopes and hazards of intercultural marriage, including dismissing her own values and needs to save her relationship and protect her newborn son, Jake. But when Cai threatens to take Jake back to China for good, Susan must find the courage to stand up for herself, her son, and her future. Moving between rural China and the bustling cities of Hong Kong and San Francisco, Good Chinese Wife is an eye-opening look at marriage and family in contemporary China and America and an inspiring testament to the resilience of a mother's love—across any border.

Download or read book A Traveller in China written by Christina Dodwell and published by Long Riders Guild Press. This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christina Dodwell s wanderlust, combined with her inventive and unorthodox methods of travel and her unquenchable curiosity about people, make her the ideal guide to the remoter parts of China s vast territory. She visits regions largely inhabited by the many ethnic minority groups, still living their distinctive lifestyles. A four-day bus journey to Kashgar begins Christina s journey, followed by a canoe journey from Lake Karakol. She followed Marco Polo s route to Beijing, past the ruined cities of the Silk Road. In Xinjiang she spent time with migrating Kazakhs setting up their summer camp. Her canoe journey on the Yellow River resulted in her finding a hitherto-unknown portion of the Great Wall, and in Beijing she tracked down the house in which her grandmother had lived in the time of the warlords. In a side trip to Tibet, Christina spent time in a nomad tent, sharing the elaborate plaiting and ornamentation ritual of a women s hairdressing session. Christina joins Chinese tourists when she visits the oldest surviving frescoes in China, the Xian terracotta army, and spends a few days at the famous lamasery of Taer si. She witnessed the dragon boat race on Lake Er Hai, But her most precious moments were camping alone on the edge of an ice-bound lake, finding a way to unvisited beehive tombs in the Gobi, climbing a remote sacred mountain in Yunnan Province and paddling her small canoe cautiously into the mighty Yangtse. Christina s great courage, open mind and unbounded curiosity enable her to go to places few would dare visit, and she almost invariably finds kindness and hospitality wherever she travels.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... HISTORICAL SKETCH President Yuan Shift K'ai ANDED down from generation to generation in the form of legends, or written by chroniclers who had more desire to produce literary works of merit, than to make true records of past events, there is much that is obscure in the early history of China, and a great part of that which the Chinese historians have apparently made clear is disputed by more critical foreign students. Certainly a great deal of it is so entwined with the mythical and fantastic legends of a primitive people, that it is difficult to distinguish the true from the fanciful. For the purposes of this sketch, we need not concern ourselves with the disputed facts but will briefly consider the main points of the long story, as taught and believed by the Chinese themselves. The Chinese are not the original inhabitants of the country which they now occupy, but migrated from Western Asia about 2700 B. C, and settled near the present city of Siau-fu, ou the Yellow river in Shensi. As the newcomers grew in number, their settlements extended, following the courses of the rivers into the present provinces of Szechuan, and Kiaugsi. The original inhabitants were displaced by the Chinese and formed new settlements in various parts of the country, apart from the newcomers. These aboriginal tribes still exist in the Lolos, Shans and Miaotzes, living in Szechuan, Kweichow, Yunnan, Kwantung, and Kwangsi and on the islands of Formosa and Hainan. In the more than 4000 years they have been associated with the Chinese, they have lived apart, have resented all intrusions by the .Chinese and there has been no mixture of blood. The historical period of the Chinese begins with the reign of the three emperors, who in a remarkably short space of time...

Book The Traveler s Guide to Space

Download or read book The Traveler s Guide to Space written by Neil F. Comins and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have ever wondered about space travel, now you have the opportunity to understand it more fully than ever before. Traveling into space and even emigrating to nearby worlds may soon become part of the human experience. Scientists, engineers, and investors are working hard to make space tourism and colonization a reality. As astronauts can attest, extraterrestrial travel is incomparably thrilling. To make the most of the experience requires serious physical and mental adaptations in virtually every aspect of life, from eating to intimacy. Everyone who goes into space sees Earth and life on it from a profoundly different perspective than they had before liftoff. Astronomer and former NASA/ASEE scientist Neil F. Comins has written the go-to book for anyone interested in space exploration. He describes the wonders that travelers will encounter—weightlessness, unparalleled views of Earth and the cosmos, and the opportunity to walk on another world—as well as the dangers: radiation, projectiles, unbreathable atmospheres, and potential equipment failures. He also provides insights into specific trips to destinations including suborbital flights, space stations, the Moon, asteroids, comets, and Mars—the top candidate for colonization. Although many challenges are technical, Comins outlines them in clear language for all readers. He synthesizes key issues and cutting-edge research in astronomy, physics, biology, psychology, and sociology to create a complete manual for the ultimate voyage.
