Book excerpt: The harrowing story of five men who were sent into a dark, airless, miles-long tunnel, hundreds of feet below the ocean, to do a nearly impossible job—with deadly results A quarter-century ago, Boston had the dirtiest harbor in America. The city had been dumping sewage into it for generations, coating the seafloor with a layer of “black mayonnaise.” Fisheries collapsed, wildlife fled, and locals referred to floating tampon applicators as “beach whistles.” In the 1990s, work began on a state-of-the-art treatment plant and a 10-mile-long tunnel—its endpoint stretching farther from civilization than the earth’s deepest ocean trench—to carry waste out of the harbor. With this impressive feat of engineering, Boston was poised to show the country how to rebound from environmental ruin. But when bad decisions and clashing corporations endangered the project, a team of commercial divers was sent on a perilous mission to rescue the stymied cleanup effort. Five divers went in; not all of them came out alive. Drawing on hundreds of interviews and thousands of documents collected over five years of reporting, award-winning writer Neil Swidey takes us deep into the lives of the divers, engineers, politicians, lawyers, and investigators involved in the tragedy and its aftermath, creating a taut, action-packed narrative. The climax comes just after the hard-partying DJ Gillis and his friend Billy Juse trade assignments as they head into the tunnel, sentencing one of them to death. An intimate portrait of the wreckage left in the wake of lives lost, the book—which Dennis Lehane calls "extraordinary" and compares with The Perfect Storm—is also a morality tale. What is the true cost of these large-scale construction projects, as designers and builders, emboldened by new technology and pressured to address a growing population’s rapacious needs, push the limits of the possible? This is a story about human risk—how it is calculated, discounted, and transferred—and the institutional failures that can lead to catastrophe. Suspenseful yet humane, Trapped Under the Sea reminds us that behind every bridge, tower, and tunnel—behind the infrastructure that makes modern life possible—lies unsung bravery and extraordinary sacrifice.

Book The Middle Finger Project

Download or read book The Middle Finger Project written by Ash Ambirge and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh, funny, and fearless, The Middle Finger Project is a point-by-point primer on how to get unstuck, slay imposter syndrome, trust in your own worth and ability, and become a strong, capable, wonderful, weird, brilliant, ballsy, unfuckwithable YOU. "Don't worry, this isn't a book about God, nor is it a book about Ryan Gosling (second in command). But it is a book about authority and becoming your own." --Ash Ambirge After a string of dead-end jobs and a death in the family, Ash Ambirge was down to her last $26 and sleeping in a Kmart parking lot when she faced the truth: No one was coming to her rescue. It was up to her to appoint herself. That night led to what eventually became a six-figure freelance career as a sought-after marketing and copywriting consultant, all while sipping coffee from her front porch in Costa Rica. She then launched The Middle Finger Project, a blog and online course hub, which has provided tens of thousands of young "women who disobey" with the tools and mindset to give everyone else's expectations the finger and get on your own path to happiness, wealth, independence, and adventure. In her first book, Ash draws on her unconventional personal story to offer a fun, bracing, and occasionally potty-mouthed manifesto for the transformative power of radical self-reliance. Employing the signature wit and wordsmithing she's used to build an avid following, she offers paradigm-shifting advice along the lines of: • The best feeling in the world is knowing who you are and what you're capable of doing. • Life circumstances are not life sentences. If a Scranton girl who grew up in a trailer park can make it, so can you. • What you believe about yourself will either murder your chances or save your life. So why not believe something good? • You don't need a high-ranking job title to be authorized to contribute. You just need to contribute. • Be your own authority. Authority only works as long as you trust that someone smarter than you is making the rules. • The way you become a force is by being the most radically real version of yourself that you can be. • You only have 12 fucks a day to give, so use them wisely.

Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, "the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death." Featuring a new preface by the author, this paperback shows that only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.

Book Trapped in My Own Mind

Download or read book Trapped in My Own Mind written by Dale Grisso and published by . This book was released on 2022-05 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trapped in My Own Mind is about us--- who we are and who we can become. The authors could be any one of us-all of us who know hurt and darkness. These personal experiences reflect our humanity---our pain, our struggles, our values, and our beliefs. The stories are about our habits that finally hurt so much that we are desperate enough to change our behaviors. Although life holds few certainties, two things are certain: change and choice. We can choose to give-up or to grow towards our best selves. Choosing to walk through the fire of change does burn, and along the path there are many places to stumble and fall. But we can get up again and again. And each time the wounds heal more and we learn our strengths. We learn gratitude and compassion. We find our own truth. To these stories of self-discovery, we can apply psychological perspectives. Humanistic psychology emphasizes free will, personal responsibility, and reaching our full potential. Self-awareness and self-acceptance are necessary but not always easy, since true self-examination reveals the good and the bad. The author of the story It's a Gift expresses this well. "The fastest way to happiness is learning to accept who I am, gifts, flaws and all; and learning to love that person in the here and now, as I am today. Not who I may be, or who I was, but who I am." The field of positive psychology also focuses on optimal human functioning. We can work with our virtues and skills to nourish positive emotions, traits, and relationships. No matter how low we feel, we can find something worthwhile in ourselves, and shift our momentum toward more uplifting experiences. In chapter six, Stealth Deceit, the author writes, "I do not believe that influences and challenges in my life are actually the direct causes of depression. But the thoughts and emotional reactions that develop in me are what allow depression to take hold of me." And in chapter four he states, "A lot of my struggles have not necessarily come from facts, but from what I thought was fact." These insights clearly reflect a principle of cognitive psychology; our negative thoughts may cause an emotional over-reaction. When we challenge our faulty thinking and replace it with more productive thinking, we activate the cycle of better thinking, better feeling, and better doing. Once when I was down with bad times a friend simply said, "It is all part of it." I understood her reality check to mean that being human has its ups and downs and we don't just get the good times. However, we do have some choice. We can suffer in self-recrimination and blame, or we can face our challenges and take responsibility for our healing and growth. We start our journey and find the journey fuels us forward. I wish you fulfilling travels. Robin Popp, M.A. Associate Professor of Psychology Chattanooga State Community College

Book The Flight of the Garuda

Download or read book The Flight of the Garuda written by and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-08-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dzogchen, a tradition of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, is considered by many to be an extremely powerful path to enlightenment. This ground-breaking book offers translations of four sacred texts of the Dzogchen tradition: Secret Instruction in a Garland of Vision, The Flight of the Garuda, Emptying the Depths of Hell, and the Wish-Granting Prayer of Kuntu Zangpo. With an informative introduction by the translator, Flight of the Garuda is an invaluable resource for both practice and scholarship. Flight of the Garuda conveys the heart advice of one of the most beloved nonsectarian masters of Tibet. Ordained as a Gelug monk, the itinerant yogi Shabkar was renowned for his teachings on Dzogchen, the heart practice of the Nyingma lineage. He wandered the countryside of Tibet and Nepal, turning many minds toward the Dharma through his ability to communicate the essence of the teachings in a poetic and crystal-clear way. Buddhists of all stripes, including practitioners of Zen and Vipassana, will find ample sustenance within the pages of this book, and be thrilled by the lyrical insights conveyed in Shabkar's words. Along with the song by Shabkar, translator Keith Dowman includes several other seminal Dzogchen texts. Dzogchen practice brings us into direct communion with the subtlemost nature of our experience, the unity of samsara in nirvana as experienced within our own consciousness. Within the Nyingma school, it is held higher than even the practices of tantra for bringing the meditator face to face with the nature of reality.
