Book excerpt: Securing commercial aviation is a daunting task-with hundreds of airports, thousands of aircraft, and thousands of flights daily carrying millions of passengers and pieces of checked baggage. This testimony focuses on the progress TSA is making in strengthening airline passenger and checked baggage screening and the challenges that remain. Particularly, this testimony highlights TSA's efforts to (1) enhance the performance, management, and deployment of the transportation security officer (TSO) workforce; (2) strengthen procedures for screening passengers and checked baggage; and (3) leverage and deploy screening technologies.

Book Safer Skies

Download or read book Safer Skies written by Gary Kauvar and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aviation and Transportation Security Act mandates that by December 2002 100 percent of checked baggage be screened. Can this schedule be met? RAND assessed the feasibility of using explosive detection system machines or whether less-expensive explosive trace detection machines could shoulder part of the load. After studying operations at Dulles and Dallas-Fort Worth Airports, the authors concluded that a bottom-up approach on an airport-by-airport basis was better than the top-down approach mandated by the FAA. They identified six problem areas and propose improvements that, while not meeting the deadline, will increase security.
