Book The Future of Unions and Worker Representation

Download or read book The Future of Unions and Worker Representation written by Anthony Forsyth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the path to revitalisation for trade unions in Australia, the USA, the UK, and Italy. It examines the examples of innovation and digital campaigning that are enabling unions to build new forms of worker power – and overcome decades of declining membership wrought by neoliberalism, globalisation, and hostility from employers and the state. The study evaluates the responses of unions in each country to falling membership levels since the 1980s. It considers the US 'organising model' and its adoption in Australia and the UK, comparing this with the strategies of Italian unions which have been more deliberately focused on precarious and migrant workers. The increasing reliance of US unions on community alliances, as seen in the 'Fight for $15' and similar campaigns, is scrutinised along with new union prototypes like Hospo Voice in Australia, the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain and SI Cobas in Italy. The book includes an in-depth analysis of union responses to the gig economy in the four countries, and the emergence of self-organised worker collectives to combat this exploitative business model. The vital role played by unions in defending the interests of workers during the COVID-19 pandemic is also examined. As well as highlighting the most successful union initiatives to meet the challenges of the past 30 years, the book assesses the strengths and deficiencies of the legal framework for union representation in the four nations. It identifies the labour law reforms needed to rebuild collectivism, but argues that more is needed than favourable laws. This cross-national study provides a rich basis for identifying the combination of reforms, strategies and linkages required to ensure that unions can remain relevant for a new generation of digitally-active workers.

Download or read book Organising Union written by Mark Hearn and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1989 and 2013 every industry sector covered by the Transport Workers Union in New South Wales was utterly transformed by processes of globalisation and technological and market change. Large players consumed small firms; in turn, the bigger companies were often acquired by global players. The lesson that emerges from Organising Union is simple: the value of solidarity. In 2001 redundant Ansett workers were told they would never see their entitlements. In 2006 Tooheys owner-drivers were suddenly terminated by the company; the goodwill invested in their trucks and business was declared worthless. Ansett workers received almost all their entitlements—an unprecedented 95 cents in the dollar. The Tooheys drivers’ jobs were saved, the value of their goodwill upheld. Those outcomes were possible only because of the solidarity of transport workers and the support of their union. No one else stood alongside the workers at Ansett and Tooheys as consistently and tenaciously as their own union. Organising Union explores the relationship between the union and key industry players, and between the union and governments. The TWU has often been at the centre of controversy: the turbulent 1989 union election punctuated by accusations of rorts and fist fights; the clashes with the Hawke and Keating governments over the Accord and enterprise bargaining, resulting in the TWU disaffiliating from the ACTU and a truck blockade of the Reserve Bank’s Sydney headquarters; the devastating 2001 Ansett closure and the long industrial war with Qantas culminating in the dramatic 2011 airline shutdown; the struggle to achieve ‘safe rates’ for truckies against the resistance of employers and governments. In the face of these challenges solidarity—the strength of an organising union—has held the TWU together.

Book The Funding of Political Parties

Download or read book The Funding of Political Parties written by Keith Ewing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the problems associated with regulating the funding of political parties and election campaigns in a timely assessment of a topic of great political controversy. From interest in Obama's capacity to raise vast sums of money, to scandals that have rocked UK and Australian governments, party funding is a global issue, reflected in this text with case studies from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the United States. Taking an interdisciplinary approach with leading scholars from politics, geography and law, this text addresses key themes: contributions, spending controls, the role of broadcasters and special interests, and the role of the state in funding political parties. With regulatory measures apparently unable to change the behaviour of parties, why have existing laws failed to satisfy the demands for reform, and what kind of laws are necessary to change the way political parties behave? The Funding of Political Parties: Where Now? brings fresh comparative material to inform this topical and intractable debate, and assesses the wider implications of continuing problems in political funding. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of political science, political theory, policy and law.

Book Voices at Work

  • Author : Alan Bogg

Download or read book Voices at Work written by Alan Bogg and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection is the culmination of a comparative project on 'Voices at Work' funded by the Leverhulme Trust 2010 - 2013. The book aims to shed light on the problematic concept of worker 'voice' by tracking its evolution and its complex interactions with various forms of law. Contributors to the volume identify the scope for continuity of legal approaches to voice and the potential for change in a sample of industrialised English speaking common law countries, namely Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, and USA. These countries, facing broadly similar regulatory dilemmas, have often sought to borrow and adapt certain legal mechanisms from one another. The variance in the outcomes of any attempts at 'borrowing' seems to demonstrate that, despite apparent membership of a 'common law' family, there are significant differences between industrial systems and constitutional traditions, thereby casting doubt on the notion that there are definitive legal solutions which can be applied through transplantation. Instead, it seems worth studying the diverse possibilities for worker voice offered in divergent contexts, not only through traditional forms of labour law, but also such disciplines as competition law, human rights law, international law and public law. In this way, the comparative study highlights a rich multiplicity of institutions and locations of worker voice, configured in a variety of ways across the English-speaking common law world. This book comprises contributions from many leading scholars of labour law, politics and industrial relations drawn from across the jurisdictions, and is therefore an exceedingly comprehensive comparative study. It is addressed to academics, policymakers, legal practitioners, legislative drafters, trade unions and interest groups alike. Additionally, while offering a critique of existing laws, this book proposes alternative legal tools to promote engagement with a multitude of 'voices' at work and therefore foster the effective deployment of law in industrial relations.
