At that moment, though, she became one of the first subjects in a covert government program that tests a drug called Revive. Now fifteen, Daisy has died and been Revived five times. Each death means a new name, a new city, a new identity. The only constant in Daisy's life is constant change. Then Daisy meets Matt and Audrey McKean, charismatic siblings who quickly become her first real friends. But if she's ever to have a normal life, Daisy must escape from an experiment that's much larger--and more sinister--than she ever imagined. Book The Translations Revived

Book excerpt: What were the personal qualifications of the translator's of the Bible into English? Until this book was created, relatively little was known. By degrees, knowledge of each translator was recovered from oblivion. Some testimonial was discovered of the fitness of each translator for the most responsible undertaking in the religious literature of the English world -- translation of the Holy Bible. This book contains the ample proof of the surpassing qualifications of the translators for their vast learning, wisdom and piety in doing their high and holy work beginning with Venerable Bede circa A.D. 700 and concluding with the 47 translators commissioned for the 1611 King James Version.

Book The Prose Literature of the Gaelic Revival 1881 1921

Download or read book The Prose Literature of the Gaelic Revival 1881 1921 written by Philip O'Leary and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gaelic Revival has long fascinated scholars of political history, nationalism, literature, and theater history, yet studies of the period have neglected a significant dimension of Ireland's evolution into nationhood: the cultural crusades mounted by those who believed in the centrality of the Irish language to the emergent Irish state. This book attempts to remedy that deficiency and to present the lively debates within the language movement in their full complexity, citing documents such as editorials, columns, speeches, letters, and literary works that were influential at the time but all too often were published only in Irish or were difficult to access. Cautiously employing the terms "nativist" and "progressive" for the turnings inward and toward the European continent manifested in different authors, this study examines the strengths and weaknesses of contrasting positions on the major issues confronting the language movement. Moving from the early collecting or retelling of folklore through the search for heroes in early Irish history to the reworking of ancient Irish literary materials by retelling it in modern vernacular Irish, O'Leary addresses the many debates and questions concerning Irish writing of the period. His study is a model for inquiries into the kind of linguistic-literary movement that arises during intense nationalism.

Book Revival Book Of The Dead 1901

Download or read book Revival Book Of The Dead 1901 written by Ernest Alfred Thompson Wallis Budge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The translations of the Egyptian hymns and religious texts printed in this and the two following volumes form a representative collection of the various compositions which the Egyptian inscribed upon the walls of tombs and sarcophagi, coffins and funeral stelae, papyri and amulets, etc., in order to ensure the well-being of their dead in the world beyond the grave. These translations first appeared in the third volume of my work on The Book of The Dead, which was published under the title "The Chapters of Coming Forth by Day" at the end of the year 1897, where they seemed to be a necessary accompaniment to the edition of the hieroglyphic texts of Theban Recension and the hieroglyphic vocabulary thereto. The demand for that bulky and comparatively expensive work proved that it filled a want, but soon after its appearance frequent requests were made that the English translation might be issued in a smaller and handier form.

Book Revival The Facetiae of Poggio and Other Medieval Story tellers 1928

Download or read book Revival The Facetiae of Poggio and Other Medieval Story tellers 1928 written by Poggio Bracciolini, and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The facetie, as a literary form, has an ancient lineage, while, if we regard it merely as a humorous tale or jocular anecdote, its history must be almost as old as the first laughs and smiles of prehistoric man. To go back no further, we may trace it in a direct line through Latin literature, to the Greek apopthegm. Facetiae, in the literary sense, are also to be found in Oriental literature, espeically the Persian and the Arabian. The Greek apopthegm and its Roman successor had a different character from the Florentine facetia, but the difference is one rather of matter than form. The ribald, licentious note is not so common in the classic facetaie, and the historical anecdotes treating of kings, princes, and persons of high estate were mostly reverent and often adulatory. Satire and disrespect appeared in the humorous tales of Poggio and his peers. The apopthegm was, as a rule, a brief narrative, as often as not enclosing a moral lesson in an historical anecdote. Or else it was the saying of some wise or great man.

Book Revival Chapters on Old English Literature 1935

Download or read book Revival Chapters on Old English Literature 1935 written by Edith Elizabeth Wardale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These chapters on Old English Literature are intended to fill the gap between Professor Thomas’s valuable, but all too brief account in his English Literature before Chaucer, and longer works, such as those of Stopford Brooke and the Chapters in the first volume of the Cambridge History of English Literature. My primary object has, of course, been to make the works themselves known to my readers, but I have also tried to trace the development of prose and poetry during the period, showing in the poetry the modifications of the original Germanic character brought about by later influences of all kinds, and noting those forms or features which lead on to Middle English. In dealing with the many unsettled questions, I have given only the views which seem to me most important. Had I wished to do more, it would obviously have been impossible in the space which I have allowed myself; but references to other works are added for a student who may wish to make a more thorough investigation of such points for himself.

Book Revival of the Gnostic Heresy

Download or read book Revival of the Gnostic Heresy written by J. Morris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-11-24 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rigorous and provocative study, Joe E. Morrisargues that the basic tenets and practices of Fundamentalism are those of ancient Christian Gnosticism. Drawing on extensive research andcareful analysis, Morris aligns the two religious phenomena, point by point, tenet by tenet.Along the way, he provides insights into the key hermeneutic of Fundamentalism: inerrancy of Scripture, highlighting the multiple problems with the positions of literal and inerrant interpretation, their impracticality and unfeasibility, and their contradiction with their own conservative doctrine - namely, the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. This groundbreaking book dramatically recasts our understanding of the history of Christianity and gives important context to modern-day religious debates.

Book Revival Sappho Poems and Fragments 1926

Download or read book Revival Sappho Poems and Fragments 1926 written by Sappho and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to provide with a popular and a comprehensive edition of Sappho, containing all that is so far known of her unique personality and her incompatible poems Little remains today of the writings of the archaic Greek poet Sappho (fl. late 7th and early 6th centuries B.C.E.), whose work is said to have filled nine papyrus rolls in the great library at Alexandria some 500 years after her death. The surviving texts consist of a lamentably small and fragmented body of lyric poetry--among them, poems of invocation, desire, spite, celebration, resignation, and remembrance--that nevertheless enables us to hear the living voice of the poet Plato called the tenth Muse. Sappho is rated as the supreme poetess and is regarded in the same vein as Shakespeare and Homer the supreme poets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Editors of the Saintsbury Memorial Volume have been encouraged by the welcome which that book received to make a final gathering of George Saintbury's writings. From a score of different sources they have chosen essays and papers that have lain uncollected, with their themes ranging from Captain Marryat to Erasmus, from Rosetti to Xenephon, from Swinburne to Balzac's early pot boilers. Included is an entrancing study of the literary associations of the city of Bath; and the editors have followed Saintbury's own example by collecting a Scrap Book more than thirty shorter notes and jeux d'esprit on all kinds of subjects: wigs, sensation novelists, Drummond and Ben Jonson, George Sand, compulsory Greek at Oxford, Shakespeare and Welsh, Laurence Sterne tittle-tattle, Marcel Proust, and much else in true Saintsburian vein.
