Book excerpt: This Summarized version of Sahih Al-Bukhâri is an English translation of the compilation entitled "At-Tajrid As-Sarih" by Imam Zain-ud-Deen Ahmad bin 'Abdul-Lateef Az-Zubaidi. The original compilation (in nine volumes) contains more than 7500 Ahadith with repetitions and duplicates. The summarized version (in one volume) is about one quarter the size of the original and contains 2230 Ahadith without repetitions. Also, most of the duplicate Ahadith from different chains (with slight variations) have been removed and only one has been kept. Furthermore, most of the sub-narrators are often omitted when possible and sometimes only the first narrator in each chain is kept. NOTE: The numbering style has been altered slightly to includes both the Summarized and Original versions. So the Hadith numbering of the Summarized version from numbers 1 to 2230 is shown in squared brackets, while the reference to the Original version is shown directly after it by depicting the Volume number it is found in, the Book title of that Volume, and the Hadith number of that specific Book. For example: In the Book of "Fasting (Saum)", you will find the first narration beginning with "[919] Volume 3, Book 31, Hadith 118: Narrated.... etc." This makes an excellent read for the average Muslim who would like to increase their knowledge and get to know more about the authentic narrations of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings of Allâh be upon him. IMPORTANT: The blessings which a person confers to the Prophet (s) every time mention is made to him has been omitted throughout this book (i.e. "sallallâhu 'alaihi wasallam" or "peace and blessings of Allâh be upon him."). Book excerpt: The Scope of the Work The main purpose of this work is to give a critical edition of a Javanese text - the Serat Cabolek - together with an Introduction, an English trans lation of the text, and Notes. The present publication is a slighdy revised version of a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Australian National Univer sity in 1967. The Introduction to the text begins with a brief description of each of the extant MSS of the Serat Cabolek to be found in the Manuscript Sections of the Jakarta Museum Library and the Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia and in the Griental Manuscripts Section of the Leiden University Library. In addition, a description is given of a printed version of the Serat Cabolek. The eleven MSS and the printed text are compared with one another on the points of form, structure and content, in order to discover their mutual relationship. From this comparison it becomes clear that no matter how much these eleven MSS and the printed text of theSerat Cabolek may differ the one from the other, they all share a common core and all ultimately derive from a single source. The kernel of the Serat Cabolek in all probability comprised only the following sections: (1) the story dealing with the trial of Haji Mutamakin by the Kartasura tribunal; (2) the teaching of Dewa Ruci to Bhima; and (3) a commentary on Dewa Ruds counsel to Bhima.

Book excerpt: Al-Imam Taqi ud-Din Abul-Abbas Ahmad Ibn al-Halim ibn Abd al-Salam Ibn Taymiyah al-Hanbali was born in, 661 AH (1263 AC) in Haran, which is now in Eastern Turkey, near the border of northern Iraq.. His family had long been renowned for its learning, among his teachers, was Shams ud-Din Al-Maqdisi, first Hanbali Chief Justice of Syria following the reform of the judiciary by Baibars. The number of Ibn Taimiyah's teachers exceeds two hundred. Ibn Taimiyah was barely seventeen, when Qadi Al-Maqdisi authorized him to issue Fatwa (legal verdict). Qadi remembered with pride that it was he who had first permitted an intelligent and learned man like Ibn Taimiyah to give Fatwa. At the same age, he started delivering lectures. When he was thirty, he was offered the office of Chief Justice, but refused, as he could not persuade himself to follow the limitations imposed by the authorities. Imam Ibn Taimiyah's education was essentially that of a Hanbali theologian and Juris consult. But to his knowledge of early and classical Hanbalism, he added not only that of the other schools of jurisprudence but also that of other literature. He had an extensive knowledge of Quran, Sunnah, Greek philosophy, Islamic history, and religious books of others, as is evident from the variety of the books he wrote.

Entitlement to Dutch citizenship, pre-migration acculturation in Dutch language and culture as well as a strong rhetorical argument ('We are here because you were there') were strong assets of the first generation. This 'postcolonial bonus' indeed facilitated their integration. In the process, the initial distance to mainstream Dutch culture diminished. Postwar Dutch society went through serious transformations. Its once lily white population now includes two million non-Western migrants and the past decade witnessed heated debates about multiculturalism. The most important debates about the postcolonial migrant communities centeracknowledgmentgement and the inclusion of colonialism and its legacies in the national memorial culture. This resulted in state-sponsored gestures, ranging from financial compensation to monuments. The ensemble of such gestures reflect a guilt-ridden and inconsistent attempt to 'do justice' to the colonial past and to Dutch citizens with colonial roots. Postcolonial Netherlands is the first scholarly monograph to address these themes in an internationally comparative framework.
