Book Transitioning to a Hydrogen Future

Download or read book Transitioning to a Hydrogen Future written by M. Melendez and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges faced by alternative fuels during the last 20 years have much in common with those that face hydrogen (i.e., building markets simultaneously for new vehicle technologies, new fuels, and new infrastructure to support them both). The U.S. set goals in the 1980s and 1990s to derive a substantial portion of its fuel for transportation from non-petroleum alternative fuels by the early 2000s (10% in 2000, 30% in 2010). Although progress has been made through government and private efforts, these goals have not been met for a variety of reasons. To increase the chances for a timely and successful transition to hydrogen, the experiences of the alternative fuels industry must be understood and used to shape hydrogen transition strategies.

Book The Transition to Alternative Fuel Vehicles AFVs

Download or read book The Transition to Alternative Fuel Vehicles AFVs written by Scott Kelley and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) have seen increased attention as a way to reduce reliance on petroleum for transportation, but adoption rates lag behind conventional vehicles. One crucial barrier to their proliferation is the lack of a convenient refueling infrastructure, and there is not a consensus on how to locate initial stations. Some approaches recommend placing stations near where early adopters live. An alternate group of methods places stations along busy travel routes that drivers from across the metropolitan area traverse each day. To assess which theoretical approach is most appropriate, drivers of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in Southern California were surveyed at stations while they refueled. Through GIS analysis, results demonstrate that respondents refueled on the way between their origins and destinations ten times more often than they refueled near their home, when no station satisfied both criteria. Freeway interchanges, which carry high daily passing traffic volumes in metropolitan areas, can be appropriate locations for initial stations based on these results. Stations cannot actually be built directly at these interchange sites, so suitable locations on nearby street networks must be chosen. A network GIS method is developed to assess street network locations' ability to capture all traffic passing through 72 interchanges in greater Los Angeles, using deviation from a driver's shortest path as the metric to assess a candidate site's suitability. There is variation in the ability of these locations to capture passing traffic both within and across interchanges, but only 7% of sites near interchanges can conveniently capture all travel directions passing through the interchange, indicating that an ad hoc station location strategy is unlikely to succeed. Surveys were then conducted at CNG stations near freeway interchanges to assess how drivers perceive and access refueling stations in these environments. Through comparative analysis of drivers' perceptions of stations, consideration of their choice sets, and the observed frequency of the use of a freeway to both access and leave these stations, results indicate that initial AFV stations near freeway interchanges can play an important role in regional AFV infrastructure.

Book Transitions to Alternative Vehicles and Fuels

Download or read book Transitions to Alternative Vehicles and Fuels written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-04-14 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a century, almost all light-duty vehicles (LDVs) have been powered by internal combustion engines operating on petroleum fuels. Energy security concerns about petroleum imports and the effect of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on global climate are driving interest in alternatives. Transitions to Alternative Vehicles and Fuels assesses the potential for reducing petroleum consumption and GHG emissions by 80 percent across the U.S. LDV fleet by 2050, relative to 2005. This report examines the current capability and estimated future performance and costs for each vehicle type and non-petroleum-based fuel technology as options that could significantly contribute to these goals. By analyzing scenarios that combine various fuel and vehicle pathways, the report also identifies barriers to implementation of these technologies and suggests policies to achieve the desired reductions. Several scenarios are promising, but strong, and effective policies such as research and development, subsidies, energy taxes, or regulations will be necessary to overcome barriers, such as cost and consumer choice.

Book Managing the Transition Toward Self sustaining Alternative Fuel Vehicle Markets

Download or read book Managing the Transition Toward Self sustaining Alternative Fuel Vehicle Markets written by Derek Richard Supple and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing public policy or industry strategy to bolster the transition to alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) is a formidable challenge as demonstrated by historical failed attempts. The transition to new fuels occurs within a dynamically complex system with many distributed actors, long time delays, several important feedback relationships, and multiple tipping points. A broad-boundary, behavioral, dynamic model with explicit spatial structure was previously developed to represent the most important AFV transition barriers. Using California as an illustrative testing region, the model simulates the spatial diffusion of entrant vehicle/fuel technology pairs individually or in competition with other entrants. In this work, the integrated model is carefully parameterized for various specific alternative vehicle technologies. Structural and parametric sensitivity analyses are used to build understanding of system behavior and to identify policy leverage points or the need for further model calibration.

Book Electric Vehicle Technologies and Alternative Fuels for Winter Road Operations

Download or read book Electric Vehicle Technologies and Alternative Fuels for Winter Road Operations written by Katherine Vigneau and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this project is to provide transportation agencies who operate heavy-duty fleets in support of winter highway maintenance with research on fleet electrification and alternative fuel options. Research will cover the challenges of transitioning to a green fleet including engine and component power, torque, and durability, infrastructure and staffing support, energy resources and availability, and operating conditions. The project team compiled a current profile of the winter operations fleet and conducted interviews with the 13 DOTs who agreed to participate in the study. These organizations shared their limited experience with alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs). Due to negligible use of AFVs, interviews focused on best practice areas that will support the future use of alternative fuels. Barriers to AFV adoption and the conditions for a successful transition were also explored. Significant fuel shifts in society are rare but lessons from the shift to diesel, propane and natural gas were reviewed to determine their relevance for the future shift to electricity. The importance of infrastructure in successful fuel transitions was recognized. The project team also looked outside the participating DOTs to other levels of government experimenting with AFVs. From these interviews additional information on biodiesel and renewable options were recorded and compared. Finally, the team interviewed vehicle and fuel system manufacturers to learn about existing and emerging AFV and fueling options. The research, findings and recommendations are summarized in a synthesis report.

Book Three Essays on Transition to Alternative Fuel Vehicles Through Distributive Justice

Download or read book Three Essays on Transition to Alternative Fuel Vehicles Through Distributive Justice written by Wissam El Hachem and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we have investigated the transition from internal combustion engines (ICE) to alternative fuel vehicles (AFV) while considering the social dimension via the concept of DJ. This enabled us to highlight the many tradeoffs at play between the different policy instruments as well as between the three sustainability pillars, and therefore to minimize them. Each of the essays looked at AFV transition from a different angle with each one complementing the other two. Each of the essays has some limitations that were partially dealt with in the other two essays. However, there remains plenty of work to be done on this subject in the future.
