Their contest, however, before the outbreak of hostilities was for constitutional govern ment within the British Empire, though a few far-sighted leaders soon began to think Of independence as possibly the ultimate solution Of their political troubles with the mother country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina: A Study in English Colonial Government As far as the author is aware, this is the first study from the original sources of the provincial government of North Carolina embracing the whole period, and from the point of view of England as well as that of the colony. Four of the ten chapters were published, in a very limited edition, during the year 1901, but in form of statement these have been changed in a decided manner. To Professor Herbert L. Osgood, of Columbia University, the author acknowledges his profound gratitude for assistance rendered in many ways. The kind assistance of Professors Kemp Plummer Battle, Henry Horace Williams and Edward Kidder Graham, of the University of North Carolina, in reading the manuscript and proof is also acknowledged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Concerning the Design'd Establishment of a New Colony to the South of Carolina, in the Most Delightful Country of the Universe The Compiler of the following Volume having been led by circumstances into an examination somewhat extensive, of the sources of our history, experienced much difficulty in procuring the Pamphlets and smaller Tracts that relate to the Origin, Settlement and Progress of the American Colonies. Of the vast number of pub lications of this description that were made during the two centuries and a half succeeding the discovery of America, a few only can be found in this country, and these are almost entirely confined to libraries connected with our public institutions many of them are of great value as authentic historical records, and all are inter esting to those who take pleasure in tracing step by step the progress of the Colonies, in population, wealth, and power, Within the comparatively short period that inter vened between the landing of the first white man upon the Continent, and the establishment of a free and inde pendent Government by the People of the United States of America. These considerations suggested the plan of the Collection now commenced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Proprietors of Carolina In June, 1578, when Queen Elizabeth I made a generous grant of New World territory to Sir Humphrey Gilbert, she included the area which has since become North Carolina. In return for the Queen's bountiful gift, Gilbert was to lead an expedition to America to destroy hostile Spanish fishing fleets, take the West Indies from Spain, seize the gold and silver mines in the Spanish colonies, and make Elizabeth monarch of the seas. On his first trip to America, Gilbert was rebuffed by the Spanish, and he never returned from his second. His grant was renewed on March 24, 1584, in the name of his half-brother, Walter Raleigh, who was given authority to establish colonies and to govern them. Raleigh financed several expeditions to the New World including those which explored eastern North Carolina late in the sixteenth cen tury. The famous Lost Colony at Roanoke Island was Raleigh's last attempt to plant a settlement in America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Patriot s History of the United States

Download or read book A Patriot s History of the United States written by Larry Schweikart and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-12-29 with total page 1350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.
