Book The Transformation and Continuity of the Traditional Dwelling in Suzhou China

Download or read book The Transformation and Continuity of the Traditional Dwelling in Suzhou China written by Chuan Wang and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a brief study of factors influencing the transformations of traditional housing and neighborhoods in the context of social change. It aims at clarifying permanence and change in the built environment and identifying the ways in which people express themselves in transforming their place of residence. This thesis examines how the residents of Suzhou transform their traditional courtyard house because of socio-economic change and modernization and yet retain some spatial and social patterns which are important to them. My purpose is to examine the neighborhoods with a positive eye, trying to select the good points and not just looking at what is wrong with it. How can creative involvement in the built environment be supported in the future? How can indigenous design solutions be encouraged. The courtyard houses in Suzhou have undergone many changes during the last four decades. The traditional courtyard house in Suzhou is a type of house that had slowly developed over more than two thousand years. At the beginning of the twentieth century it was still untouched by influences of the West and the industrial revolution. Though the first transformations of the Suzhou courtyard house occurred at the beginning of this century, the most important transformation happened during the last few decades. Due to socio-economic factors, such as the Cultural Revolution, the severe housing shortage, the courtyard house, once inhabited by one extended family, had to be shared among several families. New shelters had to be built in the traditional compound. Building materials and construction techniques also changed. The resulting living environment seems disordered at first sight. But underneath the messiness, the deployment of new additions and people's living patterns show some continuity of the traditional ways. The case study might reveal the traits that have continued to survive in the physical form and social patterns, despite all the complex changes in the society that time has inevitably caused. The case study exemplifies the continuity and transformations of the traditional dwelling environments in Suzhou. An attempt is made at the same time, to identify some basic principles and directions by which the architectural language of housing and urban form in such a study can be considered.

Book Understanding the Changes and Constants of the Courtyard House Neighborhoods in Beijing

Download or read book Understanding the Changes and Constants of the Courtyard House Neighborhoods in Beijing written by André Casault and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The courtyard houses in Beijing, named siheyuan, have undergone many changes during the last three decades. The siheyuan is a type of house that had slowly developed over more than two thousand years. At the beginning of the twentieth century it was still piratically untouched by influences of the Western World and industrial revolution. Though the first transformation to the Beijing courtyard house occurred at the beginning of this century, the most important transformation happened during the last few decades. Due to a severe housing shortage and political events, such as the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), the courtyard house, once inhabited by one extended family, had to be shared among several families. New shelters, referred in this thesis as additions, had to be built inside the traditional compound. Due to a lack of space, the deployment of pavilions (the traditional construction), was interrupted. Building materials also changed. New building materials appeared on the market. The resulting living environment looked messy at first sight. But underneath the messiness, the deployment of additions shows and some constants, some characteristics that are similar to the deployment of traditional pavilions. These implicit rules are important for the preservation of the architectural language of the neighborhoods and of the entire city, as well. Methods of enclosure, levels of hierarchy in the built form, and dwellers direct control of their living quarters, are among principles that should be respected in order to preserve a continuity in the built environment Without this continuity the architectural language of the city cannot be protected.

Book Courtyard Housing and Cultural Sustainability

Download or read book Courtyard Housing and Cultural Sustainability written by Dr Donia Zhang and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural sustainability is a very important aspect of the overall sustainability framework and is regarded as the ‘fourth pillar’ alongside the other three: environmental, economic, and social sustainability. However, the concept is neither fully explored, nor widely accepted or recognized. This book elicits the interplay of ‘nature-culture-architecture’ and theorizes the concept of ‘cultural sustainability’ and ‘culturally sustainable architecture.’ It identifies four key themes in Chinese philosophy: Harmony with Heaven, Harmony with Earth, Harmony with Humans, and Harmony with Self, along with Greek philosopher Aristotle’s physics: form, space, matter, and time, it sets them as criteria to evaluate the renewed and new courtyard housing projects constructed in China since the 1990s. Using an innovative architectural and social science approach, this book examines the political, economic, social, and spatial factors that affect cultural sustainability. Supported by a multiplicity of data including: field surveys, interviews with residents, architects, and planners, time diaries, drawings, photos, planning documents, observation notes, and real estate brochures, the book proposes new courtyard garden house design strategies that promote healthy communities and human care for one another, a concept that is universally applicable. The volume is a first opportunity to take a holistic view, to encompass eastern and western, tangible and intangible, cultures in the theorization of ‘cultural sustainability’ and ‘culturally sustainable architecture.’ It is a comprehensive contribution to architectural theory.

Book Building the Invisible

Download or read book Building the Invisible written by Diane Guo and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is a country with a booming economy that has paved a path to tremendous development and growth. The urgency to build at an accelerated pace due to the country's political and economic transformation, along with its unprecedented population growth, has been reflected in its architecture. Following Mao's Cultural Revolution in the 1970s, the motto became "revolution, not evolution". Traditions, culture, and anything considered old were viewed as taboo and were suppressed and disregarded. Only the new could represent China's new face. Under new leadership, China aims to rebuild its cities, there has been a strong pull to attract international star architects to develop cutting-edge work. This thesis seeks to question if there is an "in between" that merges the past and future. It aims to discover new architecture potential in old Chinese architecture principles with contemporary architecture strategies to create a new architectural identity in China. The focus is in Houhai, a historic hutong neighborhood in Beijing that sits within the Second Ring Road. The site consists of restaurants, bars, and lounges with waterfront views that promote vibrant night life; with adjacent residential neighborhoods consisting of old traditional Chinese courtyard houses. The site has gone through transformation to adapt to the changes of the city. Thus, the methodology of introducing new construction with emphasis on traditional Chinese architecture principles is the appropriate approach to preserve the culture of the site. Traditional principles will be revisited and applied to a new setting, which in turn will aim towards culturally sustainable architecture.

Book excerpt: Siheyuan is the archetype of traditional Chinese courtyard housing complex. This thesis explores the concept of harmony imbedded in the Siheyuan in context of Beijing. A number of architectural attributes of the model are presented at city, neighborhood, and dwelling scales. It is a flexible mechanism that is adaptive to changes, until it goes out of balance. In the 20th century, Siheyuan is transformed during Beijing's residential densification. Positive communal transformation and harmonious neighborhood has appeared when the archetype stays in balance. Negative transmutation and loss of harmony happens when balance is broken by overcrowded random infills. Siheyuan has its potential and value for residential transformation despite its lower density. This thesis intends to bring the broken model back in balance. Today's Beijing Siheyuan preservation and revitalization needs to be according the archetype's own language in order to recover harmony in the neighborhoods.
