Book Affective Transfer and Emotion Modulation An Examination of the Excitation transfer Theory ETT and the Incompatible Response Model IRM

Download or read book Affective Transfer and Emotion Modulation An Examination of the Excitation transfer Theory ETT and the Incompatible Response Model IRM written by Clayton Beau Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current thesis examined two opposing theories of emotion transfer: Excitation-Transfer Theory and the Incompatible Response Model. The Excitation-Transfer Theory emphasizes the role of arousal. Nonspecific residual arousal from one emotional experience amplifies subsequent emotional states regardless of valence, while the Incompatible Response Model stresses the pairing of valence states. The current study examined how modulating emotions elicited while viewing unpleasant pictures would affect subsequent emotions elicited while viewing pleasant pictures. The results revealed only partial support for either theory. The current thesis proposes a new, more interactive model of emotion transfer that primarily extends the Incompatible Response Model. We suggest the main determinant of emotion transfer is valence but the pattern of emotion transfer is also strongly influenced by a valence-arousal interaction. Future research will be needed to elucidate the relative contributions of valence, arousal, and their interaction in determining emotion transfer.

Book Experienced Cognition

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard A. Carlson
  • Publisher : Psychology Press
  • Release : 1997-09-01
  • ISBN : 1135693099
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book Experienced Cognition written by Richard A. Carlson and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1997-09-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a theoretical framework for understanding consciousness and learning. Drawing on work in cognitive psychology and philosophy, this framework begins with the observation that to be conscious is literally to have a point of view. From this starting point, the book develops a descriptive scheme that allows perceptual, symbolic, and emotional awareness to be discussed in common theoretical terms, compatible with a computational view of the mind. A central theme is our experience of ourselves as agents, consciously controlling activities situated in environments. In contrast to previous theories of consciousness, the experienced cognition framework emphasizes the changes in conscious control as individuals acquire skills. The book is divided into four parts. The first introduces the central themes and places them in the context of information-processing theory and empirical research on cognitive skill. The second develops the theoretical framework, emphasizing the unity of perceptual, symbolic, and emotional awareness and the relation of conscious to nonconscious processes. The third applies the experienced cognition framework to a variety of topics in cognitive psychology, including working memory, problem solving, and reasoning. It also includes discussions of everyday action, skill, and expertise, focusing on changes in conscious control with increasing fluency. The last concludes the book by evaluating the recent debate on the "cognitive unconscious" and implicit cognition from the perspective of experienced cognition, and considering the prospects for a cognitive psychology focused on persons. This book addresses many of the issues raised in philosophical treatments of consciousness from the point of view of empirical cognitive psychology. For example, the structure of conscious mental states is addressed by considering how to describe them in terms of variables suitable for information-processing theory. Understanding conscious states in this way also provides a basis for developing empirical hypotheses, for example, about the relation of emotion and cognition, about the apparent "mindlessness" of skilled activity, and about the nature and role of goals in guiding activity. Criticisms of the computational view of mind are addressed by showing that the role of first-person perspectives in cognition can be described and investigated in theoretical terms compatible with a broadly-conceived information-processing theory of cognition.

Book Cognitive Appraisal Emotion and Empathy

Download or read book Cognitive Appraisal Emotion and Empathy written by Becky Lynn Omdahl and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a wide array of social sciences, interest in emotion is flourishing. Psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, communication scholars, and cognitive scientists are exploring human emotions in a variety of contexts. This book speaks to central issues raised by scholars in these disciplines through its review of leading cognitive appraisal theories of emotion, clarification of the nature of empathy, and exploration of how people identify and respond to the emotions hidden within the stories people tell. Intrigue with the separateness and oneness of human existence and experience is evident throughout history. It appears in the teachings of all great religions, in the commentaries of philosophers, and in the perceptions of the most famous characters in classic literature. Perhaps it is this wonderment with human distinction and unity that has spawned interest in empathy as a pervasive human phenomena. This book presents an initial examination of the role of cognitive appraisals in facilitating decoding accuracy and empathy. It compares the leading cognitive appraisal theories and addresses the relationships among appraisal information, empathy, and emotion decoding. Real-life descriptions of emotional experiences are used as the basis for a study examining the relationships between perceived appraisals and perspective-taking, and accurate decoding and empathy. Other studies probe the effects of specific appraisal information on decoding and emotional reactions, and address emotional reactivity to stories and delayed retention. Finally, specific applications are offered for parents, educators, social service employees, writers, advertisers, and people striving for personal well-being and healthy relationships.

Book Appraisal Processes in Emotion

Download or read book Appraisal Processes in Emotion written by Klaus R. Scherer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-03 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific study of emotion has long been dominated by theories emphasizing the subjective experience of emotions and their accompanying expressive and physiological responses. The processes by which different emotions are elicited has received less attention, the implicit assumption being that certain emotions arise automatically in response to certain types of events or situations. Such an assumption is incompatible with data showing that similar situations can provoke a range of emotions in different individuals, or even the same individual at different times. Appraisal theory, first suggested by Magda Arnold and Richard Lazarus, was formulated to address this shortcoming in our understanding of emotion. The central tenet of appraisal theory is that emotions are elicited according to an individual's subjective interpretation or evaluation of important events or situations. Appraisal research focuses on identifying the evaluative dimensions or criteria that predict which emotion will be elicited in an individual, as well as linking the appraisal process with the production of emotional responses. This book represents the first full-scale summary of the current state of appraisal research. Separate sections cover the history of apraisal theory and its fundamental ideas, the views of some of the major theorists currently active in the field, theoretical and methodological problems with the appraisal approach including suggestions for their resolution, social, cultural and individual differences and the application of appraisal theory to understanding and treating emotional pathology, and the methodology used in appraisal research including measuring and analyzing self-report, physiological, facial, and vocal indicators of appraisal, and simulating appraisal processes via computational models. Intended for advanced students and researchers in emotion psychology, it provides an authoritative assessment and critique of the current state of the art in appraisal research.

Book Sentimentalism Ethics and the Culture of Feeling

Download or read book Sentimentalism Ethics and the Culture of Feeling written by M. Bell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-09-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentimentalism, Ethics and the Culture of Feeling defends feeling against customary distrust or condescension by showing that the affective turn of the eighteenth-century cult of sentiment, despite its sometimes surreal manifestations, has led to a positive culture of feeling. The very reaction against sentimentalism has taught us to identity sentimentality. Fiction, moreover, remains a principal means not just of discriminating quality of feeling but of appreciating its essentially imaginative nature.

Book Research on Emotion and Learning Contributions from Latin America

Download or read book Research on Emotion and Learning Contributions from Latin America written by Camilo Hurtado-Parrado and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America has increased its share of world scientific publications by nearly twofold during the last two decades (approximately from 2 to 4%). Despite this positive trend, the scholarly impact of scientific research produced in the region - measured in terms of citation rate - remains low. Two interrelated factors that contribute to this situation is that most research groups tend to work in isolation or in local sporadic collaboration, and results are often published in journals that are not indexed in major citation databases (e.g., SCOPUS, or Web of Science). Ultimately, part of Latin American high-quality research seems to remain hidden from the rest of the world. Over the last decades, an important number of Latin American scientists have developed fruitful research agendas on questions on learning and emotion, focusing on basic and/or translational research with humans and other animal models, and implementing diverse methodologies. Notwithstanding the important contributions of these research programs, Latin American research on emotion and learning has followed the overall trend of other research fields throughout the region; namely, remaining partially hidden from the large scientific community of the world. This Research Topic aimed to engage researchers from Latin America to share their empirical and conceptual work on learning and emotion. Ultimately, this effort was expected to strengthen and integrate our regional community of experts, enhance global networking, and establish new challenges and developments for future investigation.
