Book The Trans Caucasian Campaign of the Turkish Army Under Omer Pasha a Personal Narrative

Download or read book The Trans Caucasian Campaign of the Turkish Army Under Omer Pasha a Personal Narrative written by Laurence Oliphant and published by RoutledgeCurzon. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arrival of a Franco-British fleet in the Black Sea in 1854 to aid Ottoman Turkey against Russian expansion was seen as a formidable danger to Russian rule in the Caucasus. Against the better judgement of the allies, the Turkish army planned to advance on the Russian controlled cities of Kutaisi and Tbilisi. This book reproduces the account of Lawrence Oliphant, who, as a Times newspaper correspondant, joined this campaign, advancing from Abkhazia to Mingrelia, where the conditions of winter forced a withdrawal before a major confrontation with the Russians. Oliphant's accounts are not only notable as living despatches from the front but also as significant studies in the psychology of the military commanders of the time. The volume also includes a reprint of Oliphant's pamphlet The Trans-Caucasian Provinces, written from the seat of war in Zugdidi, Mingrelia, which argues the strategic importance of the South Caucasus and presents an overview of problems posed by the religious make-up of the region.

Book The Ottoman Crimean War 1853 1856

Download or read book The Ottoman Crimean War 1853 1856 written by Candan Badem and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crimean War was a defining event in both European and Ottoman history, but it has principally been studied from the Europeans’ point of view. This study analyzes the role of the Ottoman Empire in the Crimean War and the War’s impact on the Ottoman state and Ottoman society. Based on hitherto unused Ottoman and Russian sources, it offers new insights into the Crimean War’s financial, social and political implications for the Empire, emphasizing the importance of the Ottomans as both actors and victims. In addition to analyzing Ottoman and European public opinion and the diplomatic, economic and political origins of the War, The Ottoman Crimean War (1853-1856) also contains a critical review of the voluminous existing literature on the subject.

Book The Fall of the Ottomans

Download or read book The Fall of the Ottomans written by Eugene Rogan and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A remarkably readable, judicious and well-researched account" (Financial Times) of World War I in the Middle East By 1914 the powers of Europe were sliding inexorably toward war, and they pulled the Middle East along with them into one of the most destructive conflicts in human history. In The Fall of the Ottomans, award-winning historian Eugene Rogan brings the First World War and its immediate aftermath in the Middle East to vivid life, uncovering the often ignored story of the region's crucial role in the conflict. Unlike the static killing fields of the Western Front, the war in the Middle East was fast-moving and unpredictable, with the Turks inflicting decisive defeats on the Entente in Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, and Gaza before the tide of battle turned in the Allies' favor. The postwar settlement led to the partition of Ottoman lands, laying the groundwork for the ongoing conflicts that continue to plague the modern Arab world. A sweeping narrative of battles and political intrigue from Gallipoli to Arabia, The Fall of the Ottomans is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the Great War and the making of the modern Middle East.

Download or read book The Ghost of Freedom written by Charles King and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-11 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caucasus mountains rise at the intersection of Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. A land of astonishing natural beauty and a dizzying array of ancient cultures, the Caucasus for most of the twentieth century lay inside the Soviet Union, before movements of national liberation created newly independent countries and sparked the devastating war in Chechnya. Combining riveting storytelling with insightful analysis, The Ghost of Freedom is the first general history of the modern Caucasus, stretching from the beginning of Russian imperial expansion up to the rise of new countries after the Soviet Union's collapse. In evocative and accessible prose, Charles King reveals how tsars, highlanders, revolutionaries, and adventurers have contributed to the fascinating history of this borderland, providing an indispensable guide to the complicated histories, politics, and cultures of this intriguing frontier. Based on new research in multiple languages, the book shows how the struggle for freedom in the mountains, hills, and plains of the Caucasus has been a perennial theme over the last two hundred years--a struggle which has led to liberation as well as to new forms of captivity. The book sheds valuable light on the origins of modern disputes, including the ongoing war in Chechnya, conflicts in Georgia and Azerbaijan, and debates over oil from the Caspian Sea and its impact on world markets. Ranging from the salons of Russian writers to the circus sideshows of America, from the offices of European diplomats to the villages of Muslim mountaineers, The Ghost of Freedom paints a rich portrait of one of the world's most turbulent and least understood regions.

Book Crisis of the Ottoman Empire

Download or read book Crisis of the Ottoman Empire written by James J. Reid and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2000 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work focuses upon the military problems of the Ottoman Empire in the era 1839 to 1878. The author examines the Crimean War (1853 to 1856) from the perspective of the Ottoman army, using British and French sources, as well as the few available Ottoman materials. Scholarship on the war has ignored this aspect, but the high quality of work about the British, French, and Russian involvement in the war has enabled the present study to advance its own work. The inability of the Ottoman high command to learn the lessons of the Crimean War led to serious defeats in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Revolts occurring in this period also receive attention. While the book analyzes the nature of war in the Balkans and Anatolia, its primary objective is the study of the war's social and psychological influences. This perspective runs as a theme throughout the book, but the author focuses on the psychological aspects in the final chapter using comparative perspectives. .
