Book excerpt: 2014 INDIES Winner - Bronze in Fantasy Fiction 'A thrilling story fraught with uncertainty and betrayal.’ Publishers Weekly In an epic and mystical tale that resonates with modern times, the young Eamon Goodman goes on a journey of discovery. A journey which sees him taking an increasingly pivotal role in the battle between the rival forces of the king and the master, and takes him from being a young soldier in his home of Edesfield to being a fast-rising hero in the dense and rotten city of Dunthruik. Under the watchful eye of Lord Cathair, in the loving arms of Lady Alessia Turnholt, and torn between enemy forces, Eamon’s experiences lead him to question the nature and true meaning of some of the most important things in life - love and friendship, loyalty and honour, and who he really is. But will the answers he finds lead him to become true to himself and true to his name? Will they lead him to become a good man?

Book Flesh is Heir

Download or read book Flesh is Heir written by Lincoln Kirstein and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lincoln Kirstein is well known as the founding director of the New York City Ballet, for his writings on dance, photography, painting, and sculpture. Known to few readers, however, is this early (1932)work, his only published novel, autobiographical in content but historical in scope and purpose. In a revealing Afterword, Mr. Kirstein recalls his family background and education as well as the circumstances surrounding the writing of his novel. Family wealth and the "permissive generosity" of his parents gave him familiarity with "a fraction of literary London, the main European museums, plus Northern Italy, Spain, and North Africa" by the time he had completed his college education. He thus possessed a unique view, which inspired him "to write an 'historical' novel which would utilize what I knew and felt about my own times in as pictorial a fashion as I might muster." Flesh is Heir is the story of a boy who serves as the type of the first generation arising in the United States after World War I. At boarding school he experiences mortal fear of a crazy classmate: in a glass works he sees the ironical cruelties of manual labor; in London and Paris he encounters the decadence of one pattern of life, and in Venice, the death of another. He returns from abroad to find the triumph of a violent new force, and with that force he is absorbed.

When Gideon Jukes and Juliana Lovell, who are on opposites sides of the struggle, meet during one of the era's most crucial events, their mutual attraction brings the comfort and companionship for which they both have yearned. But the flowering of radical thought collapses; its failure leads to endless plots and strange alliances. And shadows from the past threaten them individually and together in their hard-won peace. Like Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind and John Jakes' North and South, Lindsey Davis brings to life a turbulent time through the stories of those who struggled, fought, lived and loved on all sides of a defining and devastating time.
