This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Speaking Principles and Practice Much that might have been kept for the Preface, and thereby safely hidden from students, has been set down in the Introduction and in other parts of this book. There remains only what I Wish to say to my own tribe, the teachers of public speaking. The mom of the book is indicated by its title; or would he were it not for the fact that the term public speaking is now being stretched to cover all oral expression. At any rate, I treat here of practical public speaking, and consider within the scope of this book whatever pertains to preparing and delivering one 's own speech. What ever in this text pertains to interpretation is introduced chiefly for its bearing upon the training of practical pub lic speakers; and I have taken a broad View of what does bear upon such training. The field is too large for complete treatment in one volume of convenient size. My endeavor has been to make a book which should form the foundation for prac tically all the work in this field; but with it should be used a book on argumentation, one or more books of speeches, and also, for the sake of gaining various points of view, other texts of the same general scope as this. The main work of the student of public speaking, of course, should be speech-making; and a great deal of his instruction must be received as individual criticism. Book Essentials of Public Speaking

Download or read book Essentials of Public Speaking written by Robert I. Fulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Public Speaking: For Secondary Schools But skill ih speaking is still more valuable as a means of persuasion. The time will never come when people will not flock to hear men plead causes of vital interest. There will always be a demand for those who can speak well, for business interests require men who can present cases well in the courts. The effective jury lawyer will secure a much larger share of the business of the courts than the man of equal learning and high character who is not effective as a speaker. Leaders in committees, conventions, and other deliberative assemblies are almost invariably effective speakers, for it is a well-known fact that most of the important business of life is shaped by pithy, energetic, short speeches. The testimony of the great orators is overwhelming in sup port of faithful and vigorous practice in the art of public speaking. Gladstone declares that time and money spent in training the voice and body is an investment that pays a larger interest than any other and Spurgeon says, I believe that every one Should train his voice and body, first, for the health it affords; second, for its educating effects' third, for the advantage it gives over others for usefulness. And Wendell Phillips, in defense of such training, a very important factor in his own education, declares that it is useless to waste words on any man ignorant of the vast power of agree able and eloquent speech in a republic. Book The Training of a Public Speaker

Download or read book The Training of a Public Speaker written by Grenville Kleiser and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aims and purposes of speaking to-day have radically changed from former times. Deliberative bodies, composed of busy men, meet now to discuss and dispose of grave and weighty business. There is little necessity nor scope for eloquence. Time is too valuable to permit of prolonged speaking. Men are tacitly expected to "get to the point," and to be reasonably brief in what they have to say. Under these circumstances certain extravagant types of old-time oratory would be ineffectual to-day. The stentorian and dramatic tones, with hand inserted in the breast of the coat, with exaggerated facial expression, and studied posture, would make a speaker to-day an object of ridicule. This applies equally to speech in the law court, pulpit, on the lecture platform, and in other departments of public address. The implicit demand everywhere is that the speaker should say what he has to say naturally, simply, and concisely.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Speaker: And How to Make One A - LO - NG preface to a small work is not desirable at any time. 'but as a second edition of this workis now called for, the author would say a few words on the occasion. He feels grateful to the publishers for their kind and Christian conduct towards him in his business transactions with them - to the reviewers for the straightforward and impartial manner in which they'have commented upon his work - and to the public generally for'the support which they have kindly given him. Since the first edition came out, some two months ago, he has thought much upon the subject of public speaking; but neither his own experience, nor his observation on the world around, has induced him to alter his opinion, or to retract anything which he at first adduced. Therefore, elision of former state ments, or alteration of a prior Opinion, _the reader will find none. A chapter has been added on the memory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulpit and Platform: Being Notes on the Management of the Voice in Public Speaking, With Chapters on Reading and Speaking in Public, and Extemporary Preaching It is sometimes asserted that the influence of the public speaker, or orator, if it is preferred to call him so, whether lay or ecclesiastical, has been much diminished by the general diflusion of education, with the corresponding increase of reading matter and readers that has natur ally followed. The pen, it is alleged, is now much mightier than the voice. The Press is sup posed to have ousted the Pulpit, and to be about to make short work of the Platform. In conse quence the art of oratory, it is said, is no longer of much value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Art of Public Speaking

Download or read book The Art of Public Speaking written by Dale Carnagey and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Training in public speaking is not a matter of externals--primarily; it is not a matter of imitation--fundamentally; it is not a matter of conformity to standards--at all. Public speaking is public utterance, public issuance, of the man himself; therefore the first thing both in time and in importance is that the man should be and think and feel things that are worthy of being given forth. Unless there be something of value within, no tricks of training can ever make of the talker anything more than a machine--albeit a highly perfected machine--for the delivery of other men's goods. So self-development is fundamental in our plan.

Download or read book The Psychology of Public Speaking Classic Reprint written by Walter Dill Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Public Speaking The author of this work does not pose as a great speaker, but as one who has an abiding interest in public speaking, and who has learned more by his failures than by his suc cesses. Whatever of psychology is of greatest value to the public speaker will be regarded as appropriate to the series. There is, to the author's knowledge, no published work un der this title, and indeed no psychology published for the special use of public speakers. This fact will necessitate a re-writing of many established facts of psychology and at the same time will call for new applications and fuller pre scutations of many of the truths which in other forms would have no special value to the public speaker.
