Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragical Reign of Selimus, 1594 The play was printed in quarto by Thomas Creede with the date 1594, and this is the only edition known. It is described on the title-page as The First part of the Tragicall raigne of Selimus, ' and the epilogue promises a continuation, but there is no evidence that any such second part was ever written. In 1 638 the unsold stock was issued by John Crooke and Richard Serger, with a new title-page as The Tragedy of Selimus Emperour of the Turkes. Written [by] T. G.' These initials are supposed to refer to Thomas Goffe, whose Turkish tragedies were then fairly recent. The prologue, which occupied the verso of the cancelled title-page, was not reprinted. Book excerpt: This Broadview Edition of Robert Greene’s Selimus is the first single-volume, modernized edition of this underrated dramatic gem in over a century. First published in 1594, the play grippingly stages the bloody fratricidal warfare inaugurating the reign of Selim I (1512-20) as emperor of the Ottoman Empire. Contributing to the expansion of the range of readily available non-Shakespearean early modern English plays, the edition is designed for scholars and students alike, in the study, classroom, or theatre. The critically edited text of the play is accompanied by a full introduction, comprehensive annotations, and ample contextual material from the early modern period, including Greene’s pamphlet Greene’s Groatsworth of Wit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Baker recounts and analyses the relations of the English Renaissance historians to other writers of their time and to the historians of later ages. Supported and enlivened with a wealth of quotation from the historians themselves, their critics and their colleagues, The Race of Time illuminates the problems of historiography in an age when academic freedom was always subservient to the national interest, to the sensitivity of rulers, to the prevalence of legends, and to the envy of contemporaries.

Download or read book The Hand on the Shakespearean Stage written by Farah Karim Cooper and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking new book uncovers the way Shakespeare draws upon the available literature and visual representations of the hand to inform his drama. Providing an analysis of gesture, touch, skill and dismemberment in a range of Shakespeare's works, it shows how the hand was perceived in Shakespeare's time as an indicator of human agency, emotion, social and personal identity. It demonstrates how the hand and its activities are described and embedded in Shakespeare's texts and about its role on the Shakespearean stage: as part of the actor's body, in the language as metaphor, and as a morbid stage-prop. Understanding the cultural signifiers that lie behind the early modern understanding of the hand and gesture, opens up new and sometimes disturbing ways of reading and seeing Shakespeare's plays.
