Book excerpt: On 11th October 1915 General Sir Ian Hamilton, commanding Gallipoli, received a cable from the SofS for War (Kitchener) asking for an estimate of the losses which would be involved in an evacuation of the peninsula. Hamilton regarded such a step as unthinkable and replied accordingly the next day. On 16th October he received another cable recalling him to London where he was told HMG wanted a fresh, unbiassed opinion, from a responsible commander, upon the question of an early evacuation. The man chosen was General Sir C.C.Monro, then C-in-C Third Army in France. Hamilton never received another operational command. This, then, is his final despatch, written in London and dated 11th December 1915, and in it he describes the operations on Gallipoli in July and August .

Book Sir Ian Hamilton s Despatches from the Dardenelles Etc

Download or read book Sir Ian Hamilton s Despatches from the Dardenelles Etc written by Evelyn Field-Marshal and published by . This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Sir Ian Hamilton was a brave ( twice recommended for the VC); cultured (he wrote and published his own poetry) and civilised sldier - with a breadth of interests and intellect rare indeed in the often hidebound ranks of the British army at the acme of Empire. Unfortunately, Hamilton was given an impossible job when he was appointed Commander of the expedition to take and hold the Gallipoli peninsular in 1915. Aged 62, and not universally admired in the Army, he lacked the ruthlessness of truly great commanders. After the element of surprise was lost when warhips trying to rush the Dardanelles struck Turkish mines; there were delays as Hamilton prepared for the landings. Lacking landing craft, the landings were fiercely opposed; the terrain was harsh and the Turkish opposition so fierce that little headway was made, despite landings elsewhere on the peninsular. These despatches, published while the fighting was still underway, pay ribute to the bravery of his troops, but cannot disguise the fact that the grand operation had become a disaster.

Book Gallipoli Victoria Cross Hero

Download or read book Gallipoli Victoria Cross Hero written by John Hamilton and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The son of a former Premier of Western Australia, Hugo Throssell, volunteered to join the Imperial Australian Force which was shipped to Gallipoli in 1915. He was a member of the 10th Australian Light Horse which fought in a dismounted role in Gallipoli. He was involved in the famous charge of the 10th Light Horse at the Battle of the Nek and the Battle of Hill 60 where his actions saw him being awarded the Victoria Cross.??During that battle Throssell was severely wounded a number of times when the enemy attacked his position, but he refused to leave his post or to seek medical attention until the attack had been beaten off. As soon as his wounds were dressed he went back out into the firing line until he was ordered out of the fighting by the Medical Officer. His determination saved his battalion at a critical moment in the battle.??After the war Hugo Throssell became an outspoken opponent of war, for which he was widely condemned. It also meant that he found employment difficult and he fell into debt. When he tried to pawn his Victoria Cross he was offered only 10 shillings for it _ such was the price of valour. He committed suicide aged forty-nine.??Meticulously researched, and beautifully written, this is a moving tale of heroism and patriotism which ended in sad and disturbing circumstances.
