These lines, taken in conjunction with the dedicatory sonnet already printed, afford satisfactory evidence that Davies is addressing the author of Mariam. That the later Viscountess Falkland is intended is also clear, for though there were several Lady Elizabeth Carys, and several Sir Henry Carys, there appears to have been but one Lady Elizabeth who was the wife of a Sir Henry. The material portions of Davies' dedication will be found printed at the end of the present introduction. If Lady Elizabeth Cary was the E. C. Of the sonnet, who was the Mistress Elizabeth Carey.> Sir Henry Cary, later Viscount Falkland, had a sister Elizabeth, to whom the designation would of course apply, but it appears that she married Sir John Savile on 20 nov. 1 y86, when the author of Mariam must have been still in her cradle. But Sir Henry also had a rather obscure brother Philip, who was knighted sometime between March 16 0 5 and April 1609, and this Philip married a certain Elizabeth Bland of Carle ton, Yorks. This lady must then have been the Mistress Elizabeth Cary to whom Mariam is dedicated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Tragedy of Mariam, the Fair Queen of Jewry is a Jacobean-era drama written by Elizabeth Cary, Viscountess Falkland, and first published in 1613. There is some speculation that Cary may have written a play before The Tragedy of Mariam that was lost, but most scholars agree that The Tragedy of Mariam is the first extant original play written by a woman in English.

Book excerpt: The Tragedy of Mariam by Elizabeth Cary is the earliest original play in English written by a woman of which the text is still known to survive and the first known original play by a woman in English to be published. Although others may have been written, they were not published or survived. Elizabeth Cary was born Elizabeth Tanfield in 1585 or 1586 in Burford Priory, Oxfordshire. Her father was a successful lawyer and judge. She was well educated. She married Sir Henry Cary in 1602, when she was about 16 (Henry was about 27). James the First made him Viscount Falkland in 1620, at which point Elizabeth became Lady Falkland. In 1622 he was made Lord Deputy of Ireland and they moved to Dublin. In Ireland she converted to Catholicism, which caused Elizabeth and Henry to separate.Elizabeth began writing as a teenager. The Tragedy of Mariam was published in 1613, however, it is suggested that it was written between 1602 and 1604, immediately after her marriage, when she was 16-18 years old. It was a "closet drama", designed to be read in private houses, rather than performed in public on stage. Mariam was one of the wives of Herod. In 31 BC Herod visited the Emperor Augustus. As he was away, he separated Mariam and Salome. Mariam heard that Herod had given orders that, should he not return, the kingdom should be turned over to Salome and Mariam killed. Therefore, when Herod returned home, Mariam shunned him. Salome stated that Mariam was planning to poison Herod and she was executed for this alleged plot.
