Download or read book A History of the Medici written by Edgcumbe Staley and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-01-18 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most historians credit the city-state of Florence as the place that started and developed the Italian Renaissance, a process carried out through the patronage and commission of artists during the late 12th century. If Florence is receiving its due credit, much of it belongs to the Medicis, the family dynasty of Florence that ruled at the height of the Renaissance. The dynasty held such influence that some of its family members even became Pope. Among all of the Medicis, its most famous member ruled during the Golden Age of Florence at the apex of the Renaissance's artistic achievements. Lorenzo de Medici, commonly referred to as Lorenzo the Magnificent, was groomed both intellectually and politically to rule Venice, and he took the reins of power at just 20 years old. Of all the fields that were advanced during the Renaissance, the period's most famous works were art, with iconic paintings like Leonardo's Mona Lisa and timeless sculptures like Michelangelo's David. Thus it is fitting that both Leonardo and Michelangelo were at times members of Lorenzo's court, and the Florentian ruler, who also considered himself an artist and poet, became known for securing commissions for the most famous artists of the age, including the aforementioned legends, Piero and Antonio del Pollaiuolo, Andrea del Verrocchio, Sandro Botticelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio. When Lorenzo died in April 1492, he was buried in a chapel designed by Michelangelo. From the intro: "The origin of the Medici family is lost in the mists of the Middle Ages, and, only here and there, can the historian gain glimpses of the lives of early forbears. Still, there is sufficient data, to be had for the digging, upon which to transcribe, inferentially at least, an interesting narrative. Away towards the end of the twelfth century, - exact dates are wholly beside the mark - there dwelt, under the shadow of one of the rugged castles of the robber-captains of the Mugello in Tuscany, a hard-working and trustworthy bonds-man - one Chiarissimo - "Old Honesty," as we may call him. He was married to an excellent helpmeet, and was by his lord permitted to till a small piece of land and rear his family."

There, in his quiet room, did he delight to bury himself, and surrounded by his books, - treasures in the collection of which he had spared neither trouble nor expense, he would forget his wrongs, and, elevated and enchanted by the glories of thought and image revealed by the poetry of the ancients, so abstract himself from the material world, that it was frequently difficult to recal his wandering mind to the more sober realities of earth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Melanthe; Or the Days of the Medici, Vol. 2: A Tale of the Fifteenth Century Bitter and keen were these thoughts, as they filled the dark mind of Luca Pitti, who, with his arms strongly drawn, rather than folded across his breast, stood upon the heights of Fiesole, and looked down upon the city of Florence. The delicious fragrance of the mountain air passed un heeded over his fevered brow; his eyes were strained as if, amidst the white walls of the city of palaces which gleamed through the rich glow of sunset, he would have singled out some object; and it seemed as though he had succeeded, for a smile of bitterness lighted up his countenance, and a muttered imprecation burst from his lips, as he shook his clenched hand towards the magnificent woods which surrounded the villa of the Medici. Download or read book Murder of a Medici Princess written by Caroline P. Murphy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-18 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Murder of a Medici Princess, Caroline Murphy illuminates the brilliant life and tragic death of Isabella de Medici, one of the brightest stars in the dazzling world of Renaissance Italy, the daughter of Duke Cosimo I, ruler of Florence and Tuscany. Murphy is a superb storyteller, and her fast-paced narrative captures the intrigue, the scandal, the romantic affairs, and the violence that were commonplace in the Florentine court. She brings to life an extraordinary woman, fluent in five languages, a free-spirited patron of the arts, a daredevil, a practical joker, and a passionate lover. Isabella, in fact, conducted numerous affairs, including a ten-year relationship with the cousin of her violent and possessive husband. Her permissive lifestyle, however, came to an end upon the death of her father, who was succeeded by her disapproving older brother Francesco. Considering Isabella's ways to be licentious and a disgrace upon the family, he permitted her increasingly enraged husband to murder her in a remote Medici villa. To tell this dramatic story, Murphy draws on a vast trove of newly discovered and unpublished documents, ranging from Isabella's own letters, to the loose-tongued dispatches of ambassadors to Florence, to contemporary descriptions of the opulent parties and balls, salons and hunts in which Isabella and her associates participated. Murphy resurrects the exciting atmosphere of Renaissance Florence, weaving Isabella's beloved city into her story, evoking the intellectual and artistic community that thrived during her time. Palaces and gardens in the city become places of creativity and intrigue, sites of seduction, and grounds for betrayal. Here then is a narrative of compelling and epic proportions, magnificent and alluring, decadent and ultimately tragic.
