Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book Acts and Letters of the Apostles

Download or read book Acts and Letters of the Apostles written by Richmond A. Lattimore and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richmond Lattimore, one of the most distinguished living translators of Greek, has in this book completed his rendering of the New Testament in fresh and accurate English for the modern reader. The publication of his translation of The Four Gospels and the Revelation in 1979 was hailed by the New York Times Book Review as "an achievement that places us more deeply in Lattimore's debt than any other in a long diligent career." The Acts of the Apostles, which he calls "the earliest consecutive story of early Christianity that we have," and the three groups of Letters of the Apostles--those of Saint Paul, the letter to the Hebrews, and the General Letters--are now made available to complete the New Testament in his translation. His aim again has been to provide a simple, literal rendering in which the syntax and order of the Greek dictate the character of the English style. Lattimore, as an authority on the Greek language in which these texts have come down to us, and as a writer without pretensions as a biblical scholar, allows the words of the apostles and earliest disciples to speak for themselves with accuracy and fidelity to the Greek. The book's design follows the attractive and readable format of The Four Gospels, and avoids the usual apparatus of biblical texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Tradition Breakers These were more noble than those in Thessalonica in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Acts. 17:11 Are you a Berean? Paul, during his second missionary journey, traveled from Troas in Asia Minor on a course through Samothrace and Neapolis to Philippi. In Philippi Paul preached messages which resulted in jail time for himself and his companions. It was here that the Philippian jailor and his family were converted. Paul saved the jailor from both physical (suicide) and spiritual death [Acts. 16 :11-40]. It makes one ask, what message was Paul preaching? We will answer that question later. After leaving Philippi, Paul traveled to Thessalonica where he started a church. He first entered the Jewish Synagogues and brought the message of the risen Christ (Messiah). Only a few of the Jews were converted but a great multitude of Greeks, including leading women, joined Paul and Silas [Acts 17:1-5]. Paul and Silas, being in danger for their lives, were spirited away by the Thessalonian believers to Berea. Arriving in Berea, Paul and Silas once again went into the Synagogue of the Jews [Acts. 17:10]. At Berea, These were more noble than those in Thessalonica in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. [Acts. 17:11] Do you accept every message you hear (taught in good faith) as fact? Are you a Berean? Whose teachings were the Bereans studying? None other than the Apostle Paul s. What message was Paul preaching that angered the Jews? We find it in the first letter Paul wrote after meeting his Savior on the Damascus road. That message is found in 1Thessaolnians 4:13-18. The Lord returning for His Church. Page 1 Tradition Breakers contains selections from a collection of unpublished manuscripts written between the years of 1994 and 2002. Each manuscript was written with the eagerness of a Berean searching the scriptures while reading traditional interpretations. Question. Do you blindly trust interpretations of the Old and New Testaments to be scripturally correct? Some of our favorites could be misrepresented. Do you believe? 1. That only Joshua and Caleb (over twenty years old) survived the forty years of wondering in the wilderness before entering the Promised Land? Don't you believe it! At least one other person (thirty years old or older) at Mount Sinai with Moses and Aaron outlived Joshua in the Promised Land. Perhaps his whole tribe (those who did not die of old age during those forty years) entered with him. Chapter 1. Joshua, Caleb and How Many Others? 2. That Mary, rather than Martha, is the person that you and I should pattern our lives after? Don't you believe it! Scripture informs us that Martha was not only a servant of the Lord but also a much learned disciple. Other than sitting at the feet of Jesus there is little to be known about Mary's spirituality and much to be known about Martha s. Chapter 2. Martha, the Lord's Disciple and Servant 3. That God hated Esau, Romans 9:13? Don't you believe it! God is not saying He loves one of the sons of Isaac and Rebekah (Jacob) and hates the other (Esau). In fact we should say, if God hated Esau, how could God ever have loved Jacob. Chapter 3. Romans 9:13 - Esau I hated? Not Really 4. That there was a creation of the heavens and earth before the biblical creation recorded in Genesis Chapter One and Two? Don't you believe it! How could anything have existed before God (Elohiym the plural God) provided the expanse (a place) in which to put His creation? Interesting question. Chapter 4. In the Beginning God 5. That Elijah was taken in a chariot of fire when God called him to heaven and made Elisha His prophet to Israel. Don't you believe it! The chariot of fire was to sep

Book excerpt: The popular blogger and publisher of Envoy magazine offers 10 key reasons why he loves being Catholic (and you should too). Drawing heavily on poignant anecdotes from his own experience as a life-long Catholic born in 1960s, Madrid offers readers a way of looking at the Church--its members, teachings, customs, and history--from perspectives many may have never considered. Growing up Catholic during a time of great social and theological upheaval and transition, a time in which countless Catholics abandoned their religion in search of something else, Patrick Madrid learned a great deal about why people leave Catholicism and why others stay. This experience helped him gain many insights into what it is about the Catholic Church that some people reject, as well as those things that others treasure. Drawing upon Madrid's personal experiences, Why Be Catholic? offers a deeply personal, fact-based, rationale for why everyone should be Catholic or at least consider the Catholic Church in a new light.
