This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tradition of the Goddess Fortuna in Roman Literature and in the Transitional Period The purpose of this essay is to study the nature and functions of the Goddess of Fortune in Roman literature and the literature of the transitional period.1 The frequent appearance of this figure in documents of the Middle Ages is well-known, although, perhaps, not adequately appreciated. It is well-known, too, that the goddess existed in earlier days in Rome, and was actually wor shipped as a prominent member of the pantheon. She is important, therefore, as a deity who was taken over after the transition from a polytheistic to a monotheistic religion, and her interest thus becomes twofold. Traits of the goddess in Rome, Which were re ected in the literature, would naturally survive in the literary treatment of later ages. This fact would suggest the possibility that some of the Old religious feeling might be retained in the Christian period. Are the references to Fortuna in the Middle Ages simply orna mental and perfunctory, or has She inspired fresh imaginative endeavor? Does She appear in only one sort of literature: for example, as a lay figure in a Classical background? Or is she a vital element in every variety of plot? Where precisely does the change from religion to allegory occur, or indeed does it really occur at all? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: What is good luck and what did it mean to the Romans? What connections were there between luck and childbirth, victory in war, or success in business? What did Roman statesmen like Cicero and Caesar think about luck? This volume aims to address these questions by focusing on the Latin goddess Fortuna, one of the better known deities in ancient Italy. The earliest forms of her worship can be traced back to archaic Latium, and though the chronological scope of the discussion presented here covers the archaic age to the late Republic, she was still a widely recognized allegorical figure during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The primary reason for Fortuna's longevity is that she was a conceptual deity, symbiotically connected to the concept of chance and good fortune. When communities, individuals, and social groups interacted with the goddess, they were inevitably also interacting with the concept: renegotiating it, enriching it with new meanings, and challenging established associations. All the available literary, epigraphic, and archaeological sources on Fortuna are explored here in depth, including analyses of all the attested sanctuaries of the goddess in Italy, an updated study of inscribed gifts offered to her by a variety of individuals, and discussion of how authors such as Cicero and Caesar wrote about Fortuna, chance, and good luck. This study of the goddess based on conceptual analysis serves to construct a radically new picture of the historical development of this deity in the context of the cultural interactions taking place in ancient Italy, and also suggests a new approach to polytheism based on an exploration of the connection between gods and goddesses and concepts.

Book Uncovering Anna Perenna

Download or read book Uncovering Anna Perenna written by Sarah McCallum and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The figure of Anna Perenna embodies the complexity and richness of the Roman mythological tradition. In exploring Anna Perenna, the contributors apply different perspectives and critical methods to an array of compelling evidence drawn from central texts, monuments, coins, and inscriptions that encapsulate Rome's shifting artistic and political landscape. As a collection, Uncovering Anna Perenna provides a unique examination that represents the interdisciplinary intersection between Roman literature, history, and culture. The assembled chapters offer thought-provoking and insightful discussions written by specialists in Roman myth and religion, literary studies, and ancient history. A convergence of different perspectives within the collection, including comparative literature, gender and sexuality, literary criticism, and reception, results in a rich and varied investigation. Organized into four parts, the volume explores Anna along four conceptual lines: her liminal nature as a Carthaginian figure coopted into Rome's literary, mythological, and artistic heritage; her capacity as a Roman goddess and nymph; her political and cultural associations with plebeian and populist ideology; and her intriguing influence on James Joyce's Finnegans Wake."--
