Book Coastal Trade and Maritime Communities in Elizabethan England

Download or read book Coastal Trade and Maritime Communities in Elizabethan England written by Leanna Brinkley and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first modern analysis of the coasting trade in Elizabethan England. Drawing on a significant body of evidence, including evidence from the port books of Bristol, Southampton and Hull, as well as from a much broader array of early modern sources, it reconstructs both coastal trading patterns and the lives of the merchants, mariners and craftspeople that underpinned them. While Bristol, Hull and Southampton represent the primary case study ports, a much broader geographical range is explored, providing new insights into not just the trade routes, markets, commodities and ships on which this key element of England's maritime economy rested, but also into the men (and few women) who plied coastal trade routes, exploring their socio-economic status, social and political networks, and maritime business strategies. It analyses the linkages between merchants, shipmasters, and ships, discusses merchants' business practices, including their approach to risk, and shows how this shaped the early modern shipping industry. In presenting evidence in an engaging and easily digestible way, and making use of social network analysis, the book makes clear the complexities of coastal trader networks, and the business acumen of coastal traders. While scholarly work hitherto has focused overly on overseas traders, this book corrects the imbalance, revealing in detail the complex commercial and personal lives that coastal traders lived during this pivotal period in England's maritime and commercial expansion. Leanna Brinkley completed her doctorate at the University of Southampton.

Book Trade and Industry in Tudor and Stuart England

Download or read book Trade and Industry in Tudor and Stuart England written by Sybil M. Jack and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-25 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, this book investigates the controversial question as to whether England has seen two industrial revolutions, whether economic changes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in England deserve to be distinguished as a period in which an economic ‘revolution’ nearly took place, but eventually aborted. The book considers the changes that took place in the most important industries in the period and estimates the significance of these changes for the overall structure of the English economy. It also assesses the attitudes of the various historians involved in the debate and the nature of the evidence on which their arguments have been based. The combination of critical assessment in the introduction and the evidence of the 34 original documents will guarantee a wide readership of the book among students and teachers of economic history.

Book The Growth of English Overseas Trade in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries

Download or read book The Growth of English Overseas Trade in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries written by W. E. Minchinton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1969, this book discusses the growth of foreign trade between 1600 and 1775 which brought about a commercial revolution in England. English merchants developed the exchange of manufactured goods for primary products such as tobacco, sugar, cotton and silk. A notable feature of these years was the American orientation of English overseas trade. This expansion of commerce made a decisive contribution to national economic growth. Its implications for the economy as a whole and the process of industrialization are reviewed at length in the substantial introduction.

Book Textiles and the Medieval Economy

Download or read book Textiles and the Medieval Economy written by Angela Ling Huang and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologists and textile historians bring together 16 papers to investigate the production, trade and consumption of textiles in Scandinavia and across parts of northern and Mediterranean Europe throughout the medieval period. Archaeological evidence is used to demonstrate the existence or otherwise of international trade and to examine the physical characteristics of textiles and their distribution in order to understand who was producing, using and trading them and what they were being used for. Historical evidence, mainly textual, is employed to link textile names to places, numbers and prices and thus provide an appreciation of changing economics, patterns of distribution and the organisation of trade. Different types and qualities of cloths are discussed and the social implications of their production and import/export considered against a developing background of urbanism and increasing commercial wealth.
