Book The Tourist City Berlin

Download or read book The Tourist City Berlin written by Jana Richter and published by Braun Publish,Csi. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication examines the relationship between architecture, urban spaces and the current trend of city tourism. To begin with, the volume broaches the issue of the physical effects and the resulting spatial consequences that tourism has on Berlin. Amongst other things, this book presents the historical development of Berlin's sights depicted in the Baedeker guidebook from 1895 to the present day. In the second, more theory-based part of the book, various articles provide an insight into the current global development, using examples such as the "Metropol Parasol" in Sevilla. The final chapter of The Tourist City Berlin focuses on specific topics such as the construction of a new city center by the art scene. "Architecture has seldom been as popular as during this era of urban tourism, and is increasingly often, in its numerous forms, the tourist's goal in itself."

Book Protest and Resistance in the Tourist City

Download or read book Protest and Resistance in the Tourist City written by Claire Colomb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the globe, from established tourist destinations such as Venice or Prague to less traditional destinations in both the global North and South, there is mounting evidence that points to an increasing politicization of the topic of urban tourism. In some cities, residents and other stakeholders take issue with the growth of tourism as such, as well as the negative impacts it has on their cities; while in others, particular forms and effects of tourism are contested or deplored. In numerous settings, contestations revolve less around tourism itself than around broader processes, policies and forces of urban change perceived to threaten the right to ‘stay put’, the quality of life or identity of existing urban populations. This book for the first time looks at urban tourism as a source of contention and dispute and analyses what type of conflicts and contestations have emerged around urban tourism in 16 cities across Europe, North America, South America and Asia. It explores the various ways in which community groups, residents and other actors have responded to – and challenged – tourism development in an international and multi-disciplinary perspective. The title links the largely discrete yet interconnected disciplines of ‘urban studies’ and ‘tourism studies’ and draws on approaches and debates from urban sociology; urban policy and politics; urban geography; urban anthropology; cultural studies; urban design and planning; tourism studies and tourism management. This ground breaking volume offers new insight into the conflicts and struggles generated by urban tourism and will be of interest to students, researchers and academics from the fields of tourism, geography, planning, urban studies, development studies, anthropology, politics and sociology.

Book 111 Places in Berlin that You Shouldn t Miss

Download or read book 111 Places in Berlin that You Shouldn t Miss written by Lucia Jay von Seldeneck and published by Emons Publishers. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - The ultimate insider's guide to Berlin, revised and updated for 2019- Features interesting and unusual places not found in traditional travel guidesIn Berlin, the city divided after World War II, everybody knows about the Brandenburg Gate, Hitler's bunker, Kennedy's speech, red and green beer, splendidly broad boulevards, and numerous lakes. But this metropolis, once again the capital of Germany, encompasses many clandestine niches characteristic of a heterogeneous city without a beginning and without an end between its famous backyards, nature parks, and bridges. It is often these miniscule witnesses that tell authentic history. Besides the larger attractions, this unusual guide presents Berlin's other side - such as a tower so ugly that no-one wants to open a restaurant in it; a library offering its books in the trunks of living trees; the monument for the inventor of the currywurst; a residential settlement in a former East German prison; the place where the Nazis concealed the so-called "degenerate art" which they had confiscated; the house where David Bowie lived; an automat out of which maggots can be pulled; a museum for things used for purposes for which they were not created; the reception camp for refugees from East Germany - and, in a completely unexpected spot, the most romantic place in Berlin.

Book Berlin

  • Author : Rory MacLean
  • Publisher : Macmillan + ORM
  • Release : 2014-10-21
  • ISBN : 1250052408
  • Pages : 442 pages

Download or read book Berlin written by Rory MacLean and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are we drawn to certain cities? Perhaps because of a story read in childhood. Or a chance teenage meeting. Or maybe simply because the place touches us, embodying in its tribes, towers and history an aspect of our understanding of what it means to be human. Paris is about romantic love. Lourdes equates with devotion. New York means energy. London is forever trendy. Berlin is all about volatility. Berlin is a city of fragments and ghosts, a laboratory of ideas, the fount of both the brightest and darkest designs of history's most bloody century. The once arrogant capital of Europe was devastated by Allied bombs, divided by the Wall, then reunited and reborn as one of the creative centers of the world. Today it resonates with the echo of lives lived, dreams realized, and evils executed with shocking intensity. No other city has repeatedly been so powerful and fallen so low; few other cities have been so shaped and defined by individual imaginations. Berlin tells the volatile history of Europe's capital over five centuries through a series of intimate portraits of two dozen key residents: the medieval balladeer whose suffering explains the Nazis' rise to power; the demonic and charismatic dictators who schemed to dominate Europe; the genius Jewish chemist who invented poison gas for First World War battlefields and then the death camps; the iconic mythmakers like Christopher Isherwood, Leni Riefenstahl, and David Bowie, whose heated visions are now as real as the city's bricks and mortar. Alongside them are portrayed some of the countless ordinary Berliners who one has never heard of, whose lives can only be imagined: the Scottish mercenary who fought in the Thirty Years' War, the ambitious prostitute who refashioned herself as a baroness, the fearful Communist Party functionary who helped to build the Wall, and the American spy from the Midwest whose patriotism may have turned the course of the Cold War. Berlin is a history book like no other, with an originality that reflects the nature of the city itself. In its architecture, through its literature, in its movies and songs, Berliners have conjured their hard capital into a place of fantastic human fantasy. No other city has so often surrendered itself to its own seductive myths. No other city has been so shaped and defined by individual imaginations. Berlin captures, portrays, and propagates the remarkable story of those myths and their makers..
