Book The Indian Eclipse 1898

Download or read book The Indian Eclipse 1898 written by E. Walter Maunder and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Eclipse, 1898: Report of the Expeditions Organized by the British Astronomical Association to Observe the Total Solar Eclipse of 1898, January 22 The British Astronomical Association was founded in October 1890, with the following objects: - The association of observers, especially the possessors of small telescopes, for mutual help, and their organisation in the work of astronomical observation. This is effected by the "Observing Sections," under experienced Directors. The circulation of current astronomical information by a monthly journal and by the memoirs of the various Sections; the encouragement of a popular interest in Astronomy by the monthly meetings of the Association, held not only in London, but also at the seats of the Branches - Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Sydney, and Melbourne. The Association now numbers considerably over eleven hundred members, and possesses an astronomical library and a large collection of astronomical lantern slides for loan to members; and an observatory for education and research will shortly be available. The following Report gives an account of the second expedition organised by the Association to observe an eclipse of the sun. Any profits resulting from its sale will be devoted to the aid of future similar expeditions, the next of which - namely, that to Portugal, Spain, Algeria, and the United States, to observe the eclipse of 1900, May 28 - is now being arranged for. The entrance fee to the Association is five shillings; the annual subscription is half a guinea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book discusses the study of astronomy in different cultures, applied historical astronomy and history of multi-wavelength astronomy, and the genesis of recent research. It contains peer-reviewed papers gathered from the International Conference on Oriental Astronomy 9 (ICOA-9) held at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune, India. It covers the areas like megalithic and other prehistoric astronomy, astronomical records in ancient texts, astronomical myths and architecture, astronomical themes in numismatics and rock art, ancient astronomers and their instruments, star maps and star catalogues, historical records and observations of astronomical events, calendars, calendrical science and chronology, the relation between astronomy and mathematics, and maritime astronomy. This book will be a valuable complement to a future generation of students and researchers who develop an interest in the field of Asian and circum-Pacific history of astronomy.

Book excerpt: Astronomy was a popular and important part of Victorian sciences, and British astronomers carried telescopes to remote areas in India, North America, and Caribbean and Pacific islands to watch solar eclipses. This book tells the full story of these expeditions: the long periods of planning and financing, and the day-to-day work of getting to field sites, setting up camp, and preparing, observing, and recording eclipses.

Book The Emergence of Astrophysics in Asia

Download or read book The Emergence of Astrophysics in Asia written by Tsuko Nakamura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the ways in which attitudes toward astronomy in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan, Thailand and Uzbekistan have changed with the times. The emergence of astrophysics was a worldwide phenomenon during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and it gradually replaced the older-style positional astronomy, which focused on locating and measuring the movements of the planets, stars, etc.. Here you will find national overviews that are at times followed by case studies of individual notable achievements. Although the emphasis is on the developments that occurred around 1900, later pioneering efforts in Australian, Chinese, Indian and Japanese radio astronomy are also included. As the first book ever published on the early development of astrophysics in Asia, the authors fill a chronological and technological void. Though others have already written about earlier astronomical developments in Asia, and about the recent history of astronomy in various Asian nations, no one has examined the emergence of astrophysics, the so-called ‘new astronomy’ in Asia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book The Total Solar Eclipse 1900

Download or read book The Total Solar Eclipse 1900 written by E. Walter Maunder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Total Solar Eclipse, 1900: Report of the Expeditions Organized by the British Astronomical Association to Observe the Total Solar Eclipse of 1900, May 28 The British Astronomical Association has been now sufficiently before the public for its methods and objects no longer to require detailed explanation. Founded in October, 1890, it now numbers nearly 1200 members, and its meetings are held month by month, not only in London, the headquarters of the Association, but also at the seats of the branches - Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Sydney, and Melbourne. A sixth branch is now being opened at Birmingham. As its chief purpose has been the association of observers for mutual help, and their organization for the work of astronomical observation, its operations have not been confined to its "sections," dealing with the study of the sun, moon, planets, comets, meteors, etc., but have extended to the occasional phenomena of astronomy, amongst which total eclipses of the sun are the most striking and important. Three such events have happened since the Association was strong enough to attempt to deal with them, viz., the eclipses of 1896, August 9; of 1898, January 22; and of 1900, May 28. A large party proceeded under the auspices of the Association to Vadso, in Lapland, to observe the first of the three, but their efforts were entirely frustrated on this occasion by cloud. Two parties were organized to go to India, to observe the second, and were rewarded with complete success; and the results of their observations have appeared under the title of "The Indian Eclipse, 1898." The present volume is the report of the Association on the most recent of these three eclipses, which was observed by the members at a great number of different stations, in the United States, at sea, in Portugal, in Spain, and in Algeria. The meetings of the Association are held on the last Wednesday of each month, except July, August and September, at Sion College, Victoria Embankment, E. C. All enquiries should be made of the Assistant Secretary, 26, Martin's Lane, Cannon Street, E. C. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
