Book excerpt: This estate planning organizer and journal was inspired by three beautiful women that I have loved and lost-- my mother, my grandmother, and my cousin. Part 1 of this Planner will help you identify your family, assets, and pertinent information needed in the event of your incapacity and or death. During my first-year practicing law, I was summoned from Annapolis, Maryland to my grandmother's hospital room on the Eastern Shore to discuss creating her estate plan. Other than a cold or the flu, I had never seen my gram ill, and now she was dying of stage 4 Cancer. While my family was gathering at the hospital to love on my gram, I was at her home locating her pertinent documents. After a few hours of searching, I found myself alone in a hotel room preparing her Will, and other estate documents. My heart ached to be at the hospital with my gram and my family. The first section is dedicated to my grandmother. I hope this inspires you to organize for yourself and your loved ones. Part 2 of the Planner will help you identify pertinent documents to gather, as well as provide a location of the documents for your family and your agents. When my beautiful 38-year-old cousin died unexpectedly, my gram paid for my cousin's memorial service because we could not locate my cousin's life insurance policy timely, though we all knew it existed. It is great to have policies and other assets, but if they cannot be located when needed, the investment and benefits are lost. Part 3 of the Planner is a Journal. This section will allow you to share some of your story, pass on memories, and remind those left behind of your love for them. One of my most cherished possessions is a yellow baby book given to my parents when I was first-born. My mom used it for the first 2-years of my life. I am grateful to have her words, thoughts, and love for me captured in that book, especially since at age 11, I kissed my mother on the cheek, told her I loved her, and watched her take her last breath. As an estate planning attorney, I talk to families all the time about creating their estate plans. Young, old, wealthy, middle class, low income, it does not matter. In my opinion, planning is crucial. I have created this book for you and for the ones you love. With all my heart, I hope you will utilize this Planner in its entirety, and that it is a helpful resource and a gift to you and your families.
