Did you know that Alexander got the idea of adopting Persian dress from a book he read in his youth? Are you aware that Aetion's painting of Alexander's marriage depicted Hephaistion & Bagoas as well as Roxane and really depicted the King's passions? Which girl was betrothed to Alexander's son? Would it surprise you that Alexander's mourning for Hephaistion was conducted according to models from Homer and Euripides? If you would like to get to know Alexander on a more personal level, then you need to read this book. Second edition, revised & updated.

Book The Educator s Handbook for Teaching With Primary Sources

Download or read book The Educator s Handbook for Teaching With Primary Sources written by Scott M. Waring and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators across subject areas are striving to integrate primary sources into their pedagogy and teaching. Yet, despite their importance to authentic disciplined inquiry, the implementation of primary source activities in the pre-K–12 classroom has been limited. This lack of utilization can largely be attributed to the perception that these activities are too complex to design, implement, and grade. Many teachers also feel that primary source analysis and the construction of evidence-based narratives is too difficult for students to complete in the traditional classroom. Waring argues that this is not the case and, with this handbook, provides teacher candidates and inservice teachers with detailed and specific perspectives, activities, approaches, and resources to help them effectively and authentically use primary sources in their classrooms. Book Features: Introduces teaching with primary sources, including detailed examples of authentic and tested instructional ideas and approaches.Designed to meet the needs of classroom teachers and teacher candidates in social studies, English and language arts, mathematics, science, and other fields.Offers dozens of primary sources and links to resources throughout the book.Aligns to national standards, frameworks, and the C3 framework for social studies. Can be used to meet the needs of emerging English learners and students with special needs.Focuses on ways in which educators are utilizing a variety of emerging technologies to engage students in deeper and more authentic ways of learning. Book The Broadview Anthology of British Literature Concise Volume A Third Edition

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of British Literature Concise Volume A Third Edition written by Joseph Black and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 1927 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials. Innovative, authoritative and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has established itself as a leader in the field. The full anthology comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. The two-volume Broadview Anthology of British Literature, Concise Edition provides an attractive alternative to the full six-volume anthology. Though much more compact, the concise edition nevertheless provides instructors with substantial choice, offering both a strong selection of canonical authors and a sampling of lesser-known works. With an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials, accessible and engaging introductions, and full explanatory annotations, the concise edition of this acclaimed Broadview anthology provides focused yet wide-ranging coverage for British literature survey courses. Among the works now included for the first time in the concise edition are Chaucer’s The Prioress’s Tale; the York Crucifixion play; more poems from Sidney’s Astrophil and Stella; an expanded section of writings by Elizabeth I, more poems by Lady Mary Wroth, and an expanded selection of work by Margaret Cavendish. The literatures of Ireland, Gaelic Scotland, and Wales are now much better represented, and a selection of work by Laboring Class Poets is now included. There are also new contextual materials—including a substantial section on “Transatlantic Currents.” In the case of several authors and texts (among them The Four Branches of the Mabinogi, Julian of Norwich, Sir Thomas Malory, and Phillis Wheatley), the new edition will incorporate substantial improvements that have been made in the new editions of the period volumes published in recent years. As before, the Concise edition includes a substantial website component, providing instructors with a great degree of flexibility. For the first time, a selection of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales will be available online in facing-column format (with versions in modern English included opposite the original text).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no more important topic for inquiry today than the meaning and message of Jesus, for in this quest lies the solution to human discontent and despair. Examining an array of titles for Jesus found in the New Testament, expressions ranging from rabbi and messiah to Wisdom of God, Word of God, and Lord, this study explores why Christology is not simply the study of Jesus Christ but also of the highest and best in us all. Who is Jesus Christ, and what is his significance for today? Was he fully human, the perfect human, God in disguise, or somehow all of these simultaneously? The key is to begin where the first Christians began, with their experience of Jesus, and then to press forward with the development of that understanding in our experience of Christ. While The Scandal of Divine Love is designed for Christian believers (survivors), it embraces skeptics and seekers alike, mindful that within each of us are multiple voices, sometimes affirming, sometimes questioning, occasionally even denying. Whether you consider yourself primarily as skeptic, seeker, or believer, this study encourages you to listen, appreciate, and cultivate each voice. This volume, ideal for individual and group study, will help you discover anew the magnificence of the life and person known to us as Jesus of Nazareth, as guide, exemplar, and Lord.

Book Transatlantic Literature and Author Love in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Transatlantic Literature and Author Love in the Nineteenth Century written by Paul Westover and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Anglo-American literary heritage. It argues that readers on both sides of the Atlantic shaped the contours of international ‘English’ in the 1800s, expressing love for books and authors in a wide range of media and social practices. It highlights how, in the wake of American independence, the affection bestowed on authors who became international objects of celebration and commemoration was a major force in the invention of transnational ‘English’ literature, the popular canon defined by shared language and tradition. While love as such is difficult to quantify and recover, the records of such affection survive not just in print, but also in other media: in monuments, in architecture, and in the ephemera of material culture. Thus, this collection brings into view a wide range of nineteenth-century expressions of love for literature and its creators.

Download or read book Rethinking Our Story written by G. Douglas Hammack and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." But it's no secret that the Christian church is "broke," and does need fixing. Despite great effort, things are going badly for us. We've tried trendy and tech-savvy, entrepreneurial and coffee-house gritty. They're not helping. Our problem is deeper than that. Our problem is our instincts--instincts informed by our story. There was a time when the Christian church was a powerfully transformative presence in society. It can be again--but it will require radical rethinking of the story that informs our instincts. And it's time! It's been five hundred years since the Reformation, our last major update. Today is a pivotal moment in history. With our worldview upended by quantum physics, history is demanding we renew the Christian story for our times. Rethinking Our Story reframes the elements of the Christian narrative for the new era. It explores "quantum" ways of thinking about God, human nature, Jesus, salvation, and the afterlife. The future of the church and the health of our society depend on our willingness to rethink, retell, and live out a better story. We will either update our instincts and contribute to the earth's well-being--or disappear into oblivion.
