Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Topographer, His Instruments and Methods: Designed for the Use of Students, Amateur Topographers, Surveyors, Engineers, and All Persons Interested in the Location and Construction of Works Based Upon Topography The recent large and growing demand for topographers, reveals a void in this department of engineering believed to arise from inefficient instruction in this direction. In fact, there is found to exist, strange as it may appear, no publication laying special stress upon the practical duties and requirements, as well as the theoretical qualifications of the topographical engineer. Success has, heretofore, only been attainable from the study of standard works on surveying, in connection with others treating of the drawings, and a third series on military reconnaissances, supplemented largely by actual experience in the field. It has been the author's aim, therefore, to prepare a compact manual of practical value to the embryo topographer, freed from all information so readily obtainable from ordinary sources, and containing in condensed form, a complete course for the guidance of the amateur. The latest improvements in instruments are mentioned, with their numerous time and labor-saving devices; the practical limits of error are given for the various instruments in use, as determined by the scale of the map and character of the survey; the forms of record are clearly shown for all classes of work; the corrections and reductions given with a resume of the computations and formulas, all followed by a general outline of some of the numerous applications that may be made of this important study. Among the special features of the work may be mentioned the section (23) on barometric hypsometry, in chapter II, prepared by Mr. Ashburner, Geologist in Charge of the Anthracite Regions, Pa., which the author desires gratefully to acknowledge. Book excerpt: When does a depiction of the moon become a lunar map? This publication addresses this question from theoretical and historical standpoints. It is argued that moon maps are of crucial importance to the history of cartography, for they challenge established notions of what a map is, how it functions, what its purposes are, and what kind of power it embodies and performs. The publication also shows how terrestrial cartography has shaped the history of lunar mapping since the seventeenth century, through visual and nomenclature conventions, the cultural currency of maps, mapmakers’ social standing, and data-gathering and projection practices. It further demonstrates that lunar cartography has also been organized by an internal principle that is born of the fundamental problem of how to create static map spaces capable of representing a referent that is constantly changing to our eyes, as is the visible face of the moon. It is suggested that moon maps may be classed in three broad categories, according to the kinds of solutions for this representational problem that have been devised over the last 400 years.

Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of the work of contributors who participated in the wo- shop “Mapping Different Geographies (MDG)” in February 2010, held in Puchberg am Schneeberg, Austria. This meeting brought together cartographers, artists and geoscientists who research and practice in applications that focus on enhancing o- to-one communication or develop and evaluate methodologies that provide inno- tive methods for sharing information. The main intention of the workshop was to investigate how ‘different’ geographies are being mapped and the possibilities for developing new theories and techniques for information design and transfer based on place or location. So as to communicate these concepts it was important to appreciate the many contrasting meanings of ‘mapping’ that were held by workshop participants. Also, the many (and varied) viewpoints of what different geographies are, were ela- rated upon and discussed. Therefore, as the focus on space and time was embedded within everyone’s felds of investigation, this was addressed during the workshop. This resulted in very engaging discourse, which, in some cases, exposed the restrictions that certain approaches need to consider. For participants, this proved to be most useful, as this allowed them to appreciate the limits and restrictions of their own approach to understanding and representing different geographies. As well, the workshop also was most helpful as a vehicle for demonstrating the common ground of interest held by the very diverse areas of endeavour that the workshop participants work within.
