The Society for Sussex has continued to take the lead, and 7to hold forth the most enviable example, by the annual publication of a volume of great and indeed general interest, formed of materials at once solid, authentic, and original arranged with skill, and edited with care. There is every pro spect that the new Society lately formed for Kent will be con ducted upon the same excellent model. Surrey has promised more than it has hitherto performed. But the Society that has been established for the illustration of London and Middlesex will have paramount claims to attention, if its workers shall be equal to their province, and if they do not altogether lose sight of what has hitherto remained unknown, in the blaze of light which so many writers have already thrown upon the annals of the metro polis. Notwithstanding all that has been done, this is indeed the richest mine of all, if the diggers can but find time and per severance for their task. The literature of County History on a larger scale remains as inert as it did four years ago. With the exception of the History of Shropshire by the Rev. Mr. Eyton, a work of less magnificence but not of less genealogical erudition than those of former times. For the first time within more than living memory, there is on work of English County History now actually in progress. Many of our best Topographers have terminated their mortal career, some of them leaving their works unfinished: and it would seem as if the very abundance of material, provided by the publication of some of our national records and the freedom of access to others, had overwhelmed our historical ardour and deterred us from any new undertaking of the kind. It is true that the topographical history of an entire county is a colossal task, and almost too great for any single hand. The age of ponderous and costly folios is also passed away: but that need not prevent the production of portable and useful quartos. Whilst, however, the magnificent County History is a literary product now perfectly in abeyance, we have recently witnessed another vehicle of Topography and Genealogy which has been prosecuted with considerable success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records and Record Searching: A Guide to the Genealogist and Topographer I fear I shall be blamed by many for my temerity in printing what little I have learned during the last quarter of a century about the Public Records - especially by those who, being better qualified than I do undertake the task, have refrained from doing so, in the hope that some day they may bring out a perfect Handbook to such Records. That none of my critics in posse have taken the trouble to print such a work is my excuse for putting forward this very indifferent substitute for it. The facts are these: I had, from time to time, collected a mass of notes for my own use, and found that it was very inconvenient to refer to them in MS., so thought that if they were printed and well indexed it might help beginners, and save then some of the trouble and mental worry from which I suffered, when I was first let loose on the enormous mass of the Records in Fetter Lane and Bloomsbury. I am indebted to many friends for help in completing this little book, and very especially to my schoolfellow, Mr. R. Howlett, to Mr. Walford D. Selby, Dr. Jessopp, Dr. Marshall (Rouge Croix), Mr. C.
