Only the charm of Ocksana Petrova, his girlfriend, gets him away from a penal colony and back to London. But he has to pay the price by agreeing to infiltrate an international conspiracy known as 'The Tontine.' His boss at the Foreign Office details him to identify the leading members and steal the Matrix which is the secret weapon they mean to use to disrupt Oil Supplies to Europe. He is sent to Romania for an undisclosed objective. It turns out to be the assassination of a rival member. The team travels together and when the killing is set up Ballantyne cannot bring himself to shoot in cold blood. He has to manoeuvre to avoid taking the shot and comes under suspicion. Can he escape discovery? He offers to undertake more work for the group to shield himself. Among hired mercenaries and professional killers, he moves through the underworld of Paris, Malta and Italy. An accidental slip by a Foreign Office clerk reveals his true identity to one of the gang masters and Ballantyne is forced to kill to protect his own life. From then on he puts aside his misgivings and is prepared to do whatever is necessary to finish the job. He finds himself in a whirlwind of violence and treachery. The climax comes when the most powerful Tontine member Count Fosco plans to use the Matrix to eliminate the others. How can James stop him? The book closes with James Ballantyne taking his own special revenge against international treachery.

Book excerpt: As the aged, ashen-colored helicopter continued to spiral out of control minutes away from crashing into the ice-cold water surface of the Sea of Japan, seven souls remained on board. In the cockpit, the stalwart, veteran pilot, CWO4 Hector Valor, along with copilot, 2nd Lt. Joshua Cherry, were trying desperately to regain control of the failed aircraft. This fact-based, suspense, and romantic-full novel is a story about time and memories of a brotherhood that were constantly being stalked by a wicked and sinister brigadier general from another country. The time was the postVietnam War era, and fellow Americans were still struggling with resolutions that came about from the conflict in Southeast Asia. It was a time of healing and coming together as a nation, a time when America had just finished two decades of ups and downs yet continued to remain one of the greatest nations in the world. Americans were poised and ready to get on with the business at hand of redirecting their efforts to keeping our nation strong and healthy. Furthermore, it is about fact and memory of four army paratroopers who established a lifelong commitment of support for each other, a brotherhood, if you will, made one for all and all for one, A TONTINE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What became of Harold Prettyman, a German agent captured by the British during World War Two? Eighty years later, an investigation by reporter Jack Flynt seems to end at a new dormer bungalow with white pebble-dash walls, not the grey stone terraced house in the Welsh valleys from which, according to a recently declassified MI5 file, Prettyman operated a radio transmitter from the attic alerting German U-Boats to Allied shipping movements. Dead ducks are news stories destined for the News Editor's spike and Flynt suspects he has found one until a letter arrives at the bungalow with the same coded message --Many Happy Returns Harold Prettyman--used by Prettyman and his accomplice in 1940. But there are no Allied food convoys in the North Atlantic and, believing the letter a hoax Flynt's newspaper moves him to another assignment—the disappearance of a Foreign Office diplomat suspected of fleeing to Moscow like his predecessors Burgess and Maclean. But Scotland Yard seems more interested in the Coal Miner, a missing Van Gogh masterpiece looted by the Red Army Trophy Brigade as war reparations, but now the focus of an exhibition at Tate Britain after being returned to its owner by the Commission for the Recovery of Looted Art in Europe. The painting discovered hanging on the kitchen wall of the apartment of a dead Trophy Brigade officer had been taken in lieu of pension. Private homes, art galleries and museums across the Russian Federation continue to hold large quantities of booty from the Second World War, worthless since President Putin banned the repatriation of cultural artifacts, but priceless in the West. So, is the Coal Miner exhibited at the Tate the missing Van Gogh or a forgery made by a copyist at the Hermitage in St Petersburg? A zig-zag trail leads Flynt's search for Harold Prettyman into the world of Diplomatic Bags, fakes, and money laundering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oneida Utopia is a fresh and holistic treatment of a long-standing social experiment born of revival fervor and communitarian enthusiasm. The Oneida Community of upstate New York was dedicated to living as one family and to the sharing of all property, work, and love. Anthony Wonderley is a sensitive guide to the things and settings of Oneida life from its basis in John H. Noyes’s complicated theology, through experiments in free love and gender equality, to the moment when the commune transformed itself into an industrial enterprise based on the production of silverware. Rather than drawing a sharp boundary between spiritual concerns and worldly matters, Wonderley argues that commune and company together comprise a century-long narrative of economic success, innovative thinking, and abiding concern for the welfare of others. Oneida Utopia seamlessly combines the evidence of social life and intellectual endeavor with the testimony of built environment and material culture. Wonderley shares with readers his intimate knowledge of evidence from the Oneida Community: maps and photographs, quilts and furniture, domestic objects and industrial products, and the biggest artifact of all, their communal home. Wonderley also takes a novel approach to the thought of the commune’s founder, examining individually and in context Noyes’s reactions to interests and passions of the day, including revivalism, millennialism, utopianism, and spiritualism.

Book Glasgow The Real Mean City

Download or read book Glasgow The Real Mean City written by Malcolm Archibald and published by Black & White Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There cannot be many cities where crime could mean anything from singing a seditious song to stealing a ship, but nineteenth-century Glasgow was a unique place with an amazing dynamism. Immigrants poured in from Ireland and the Highlands, while the factories, shipyards and mills buzzed with innovation. However, underneath the hustle and bustle was a different world, as an incredibly diverse criminal class worked for their own profit - with a total disregard for the law. The highways and byways were infested with robbers; garrotters jumped on the unwary; drunken brawls disfigured the evening streets; prostitutes lured foolish men into dark corners; conmen connived clever schemes; and murder was nearly commonplace. This was a dark and dangerous world, with a volatile population and the constant threat of riots. Holding back the tide of lawlessness was Britain's first professional police force, established in Glasgow in 1800. Their task of policing the city was daunting as they faced everything from petty crime to murder, the notorious Paisley Union Bank robbery to a string of jewellery thefts in the city centre. Glasgow: The Real Mean City is a fascinating account of the century-long struggle of the forces of law and order as they battled to bring peace to a troubled city.

After being held hostage and tortured in the Middle East when his first operation went sour, he decided to leave, but soon found that it was not that easy to quit. He made a pact with his partner Charley Panarti to leave MI5, only to be drawn into an international triangle of drugs, arms and politics reaching from Saudi Arabia to Ireland. Less than a year later, Dick and Charley are drawn into political intrigue and an attempt to blacken Harold Wilson's government. Dick and Charley are no strangers to the 'dark side' of life but they need all the black humour they can muster to get through the latest list of perverted demands from the boss Fiona Renwick, the Head of Counter Subversion. Only recently transferred to Fiona's Desk at special request, the two are exhausted already, partly due, perhaps, to the abuse heaped on them just months previously. Dick and Charley's first concern is why has Fiona requested them – the ones she has always called Mr and Mrs Fuck-up?............

In light of this, D’Alvia provides unique financial knowledge and delivers a book that constitutes an outstanding introduction to the topic of the speculator through its historical account and its evolution till modern days. Academics, lawyers, financial regulators, and retail and qualified investors should save a space for it on their shelves.
