Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient Egypt, one of the primary roles of the king was to maintain order and destroy chaos. Since the beginning of Egyptian history, images of foreigners were used as symbols of chaos and thus shown as captives being bound and trampled under the king's feet. The early 18th dynasty (1550-1372 BCE) was the height of international trade, diplomacy and Egyptian imperial expansion. During this time new images of foreigners bearing tribute became popular in the tombs of the necropolis at Thebes, the burial place of the Egyptian elite. This volume analyses the new presentation of foreigners in these tombs. Far from being chaotic, they are shown in an orderly fashion, carrying tribute that underscores the wealth and prestige of the tomb owner. This orderliness reflects the ability of the Egyptian state to impose order on foreign lands, but also crucially symbolises the tomb owner's ability to overcome the chaos of death and achieve a successful afterlife. Illustrated with colour plates and black-and-white images, this new volume is an important and original study of the significance of these images for the tomb owner and the functioning of the funerary cult.

Book Thebes its Tombs and their Tenants Ancient and Present

Download or read book Thebes its Tombs and their Tenants Ancient and Present written by Alexander Henry Rhind and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His independent means as the son of a wealthy banker enabled Alexander Henry Rhind (1833-63) to devote his short life to antiquarianism. While reading for the Scottish bar, he studied and investigated Pictish remains, and pressed for the inclusion of archaeological sites in Ordnance Survey maps. On developing tubercular symptoms, he gave up his legal studies and passed the winters from 1855 to 1857 in Egypt, where he made the important studies and excavations recorded in this 1862 book. He focuses on the necropolis of Thebes, and in particular on the unplundered tomb of an eighteenth-dynasty official. Putting his work into the wider context of the history of ancient Egypt and the importance of the city of Thebes, he also describes the reuse of the necropolis ruins as homes for modern Egyptian peasants and as the centre of a thriving trade in antiquities, both genuine and forged.

Book Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes 1419 1372 BCE

Download or read book Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes 1419 1372 BCE written by Melinda K. Hartwig and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes, 1419-1372 BCE examines the style, iconography, and symbolism of painting in all extant private Theban tomb chapels decorated during the reigns of Thutmose IV and Amenhotep III. The book studies the ways in which pictorial imagery functioned on behalf of the dead in the afterlife, presented their identity to the living, and revealed underlying religious developments with important societal implications. Various aspects of the pre-Amarna Theban tomb are explored, from the tomb's purpose as a creative and commemorative vehicle for the deceased to the placement and functional properties of its imagery. The book also discusses the different styles of painting in the chapels of state and religious officials and how these styles reveal workshop organization and "patronage" practices in Thebes. The majority of the book is dedicated to the iconography of the functioning image in the tomb chapel, its reception, and its purpose as a bridge between what was represented and what was signified, between the mundane and the sacred, and between the living and the dead. Particular attention is paid to the iconography on the "western" back walls of the transverse hall in T-shaped tomb chapels, walls that held aesthetic, cultic, and symbolic significance to the ancient Egyptians. On these walls as well as the northern or southern long wall in rectangular tomb chapels, iconography and text commemorated the deceased's personal and professional identity, projected this identity into the hereafter, and contained key components for the tomb owner's rebirth. The eternal well-being of the deceased was secured through the iconography of gift giving that also mirrored religious trends that permeated society. Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes, 1419-1372 BCE addresses Theban tomb painting and its underlying creative and commemorative properties as a medium of regeneration, preservation, and display on behalf of the tomb owner and the world of which he was a part.

Book The Monuments of Senenmut

Download or read book The Monuments of Senenmut written by Peter F. Dorman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988. In all past commentaries on Senenmut and his time, 1 the single most pervasive problem with which modem scholars--and no doubt even contemporary ancient Egyptians--have had the most difficulty in coming to terms is perhaps the fact of Hatshepsut's kingship. The motives for her accession, the extent of her power, the nature of her political support, the legacy of her rule, and the reasons for her proscription are all themes that derive from the monumental and chronological data that must form the basis of any evaluation of her reign. In the course of the past century, as an increasing number of monuments belonging to Senenmut have been discovered or newly identified, each one has understandably provided an opportunity for a reinterpretation of the career of this powerful courtier; yet each has also provided the chance for fresh commentary on Hatshepsut's kingship and her presumed rivals for the throne of Egypt.
