Book Medieval Art Medieval People

Download or read book Medieval Art Medieval People written by Richard H. Putney and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its installation in 1932, the Cloister Gallery has been the setting of group tours, University and Museum classes, weddings. and, of course, visits by thousands of families and individuals. The gallery's popularity is due in large part to its display of beautiful objects made in Europe during the Middle Ages. The gallery's most striking feature is its dramatic installation of three arcades from three long-demolished or abandoned buildings in southern France. Only a handful of American museums are fortunate enough to have such galleries. Responding to visitor demand, Richard H. Putney, professor of art history at the University of Toledo, was commissioned to write about Toledo's cloister arcades and some of the medieval art objects. His text covers essential aspects of style, chronology, and historical setting, but his central focus is on the relationship of some of the works of art in the collection to the people--churchmen, monks, noblemen, peasants, and artists--who made up medieval society

Book excerpt: America is haunted. Ghosts from its violent history--the genocide of Indigenous peoples, slavery, the threat of nuclear annihilation, and traumatic wars--are an inescapable and unsettled part of the nation's heritage. Not merely in the realm of metaphor but present and tangible, urgently calling for contact, these otherworldly visitors have been central to our national identity. Through times of mourning and trauma, artists have been integral to visualizing ghosts, whether national or personal, and in doing so have embraced the uncanny and the inexplicable. This stunning catalog, accompanying the first major exhibition to assess the spectral in American art, explores the numerous ways American artists have made sense of their own experiences of the paranormal and the supernatural, developing a rich visual culture of the intangible. Featuring artists from James McNeill Whistler and Kerry James Marshall to artist/mediums who made images with spirits during séances, this catalog covers more than two hundred years of the supernatural in American art. Here we find works that explore haunting, UFO sightings, and a broad range of experiential responses to other worldly contact.

Book Andr s Sz nt The Future of the Museum

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As museums worldwide shuttered in 2020 because of the coronavirus, New York-based cultural strategist András Szántó conducted a series of interviews with an international group of museum leaders. In a moment when economic, political, and cultural shifts are signaling the start of a new era, the directors speak candidly about the historical limitations and untapped potential of art museums. Each of the twenty-eight conversations in this book explores a particular topic of relevance to art institutions today and tomorrow. What emerges from the series of in-depth conversations is a composite portrait of a generation of museum leaders working to make institutions more open, democratic, inclusive, experimental and experiential, technologically savvy, culturally polyphonic, attuned to the needs of their visitors and communities, and concerned with addressing the defining issues of the societies around them. The dialogues offer glimpses of how museums around the globe are undergoing an accelerated phase of reappraisal and reinvention. Campbell, Tania Coen-Uzzielli, Rhana Devenport, María Mercedes González, Max Hollein, Sandra Jackson-Dumont, Mami Kataoka, Brian Kennedy, Koyo Kouoh, Sonia Lawson, Adam Levine, Victoria Noorthoorn, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Anne Pasternak, Adriano Pedrosa, Suhanya Raffel, Axel Rüger, Katrina Sedgwick, Franklin Sirmans, Eugene Tan, Philip Tinari, Marc-Olivier Wahler, Marie-Cécile Zinsou

Book Strong Women Beautiful Men

Download or read book Strong Women Beautiful Men written by Laura J. Mueller and published by Brill Hotei. This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shin-hanga, literally meaning 'new prints', was the name given to a Japanese print artists' movement in the early years of the twentieth century. It sought to revive the traditional style of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the Edo period (1603-1868). The connection between shin-hanga and the Toledo Museum of Art began when Yoshida Hiroshi, one of the leaders of the movement, and his artist wife met J. Arthur MacLean and Dorothy Blair, at that time connected to the John Herron Art Museum in Indianapolis. When Mr. MacLean and Miss Blair established Toledo's Asian Art Department in 1927-28, they decided to collaborate with their friends the Yoshidas on two exhibitions of modern Japanese prints, which took place in 1930 and 1936. This book accompanies the Museum's exhibition, Strong Women, Beautiful Men, which explores the concept of the human form in Japanese woodblock prints. Many of the works in the extensive Toledo collection deal with the genre of popular figures, such as Kabuki actors in famous roles and bijin-ga, images of beautiful women.

Book excerpt: Disrupting our expectations of quilts as objects that provide warmth and comfort, Radical Tradition: American Quilts and Social Change explores the complicated and often overlooked stories quilts tell about the American experience. The more than thirty quilts highlighted in this catalogue, some made from surprising materials, are organized into five thematic sections--Deploying Quilts from the Home Front, Threads of Racial Justice, Women's Hands at Work, Quilting Queerness, and Dislocation & Displacement--and respond to such issues as the Vietnam War, mass incarceration, women's suffrage, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration. With works reflecting historical, regional, and cultural diversity, Radical Tradition considers how quilts have been used to voice opinions, raise awareness, and enact social reform in the United States from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.
