Book excerpt: Excerpt from Merchants of Death: The American Tobacco Industry During my time as surgeon general, I've been given many complex assignments - the Baby Doe issue, organ transplants, care for the aged, and now aids. But one issue was waiting for me when I arrived in this position, and it's been part of my daily agenda for the past seven years. That issue is smoking. During all this time, I've been in the forefront of the campaign to educate all Americans about the dangers of using tobacco. At first, I had the assignment because it belonged to my office. But now, after being immersed in the data for a number of years, and after closely observing just how the tobacco industry works, I feel a personal responsibility to continue working on this issue. Leaf exports to the continent since all of its cigarettes are made from imported leaf. A small quantity of U. S. Leaf is imported for blending in cigarettes by all South American countries except Brazil. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tobacco in the United States As tobacco culture was expanded into new territories, it was seen that changes in soil and climate caused important differences in the characteristics of tobacco. These differences in the properties of the tobacco leaf greatly affected its suitability for use in manufactured forms. Through gradual evolution, tobacco culture has become highly specialized. Each district pro duces a special type of leaf particularly adapted for certain uses: cigarettes, cigars, smoking or chewing tobacco, and snuff. It has been found that some types of tobacco can be produced only under certain conditions of soil and climate. By using certain varieties, and by following special methods in growing and curing the crop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tobacco: From the Grower to the Smoker Twenty-four years after Mr. Tanner penned his story of tobacco it retains its popularity in the trade and among those who desire to know something of the history, cultivation, and manufacture of the fragrant weed. It was never intended to be a detailed picture Of the tobacco industry; but it contains the boldly executed strokes of a black and white drawing pointing attention to the main essentials - an introduction to a fuller study of the subject. This aspect Of the work has been preserved, and in the preparation Of the revised edition the original text has required little alteration. Naturally, the statistical matter has had to be revised considerably, but altera tions in the text have been made only where necessary to bring the information up to date. Since 1912 there has been the amazing growth of the Empire tobacco industry, and in this edition will be found some reference to its development; but, as with other features which had to be included, such reference has been treated as amplification of the story, not as an addition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Massachusetts and Tobacco: A Chapter in America's Industrial Growth The smokers among these English pioneers had run out of tobacco by then. Landing in the wrong place in a harsh winter was bad enough; to be without the crea ture comfort of tobacco made their condition seem even worse. It was a relief to them, therefore, when they saw Massachusetts Indians who were smoking. The relief ended quickly when they tried the native tobacco for that type, an ancient plant in North America, was far too harsh for palates accustomed to the sweet-scented leaf of Virginia.
