Download or read book European Communities written by John Paxton and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of the European Economic Community in 1958 was one of the most remarkable developments in the history of the post-World War II era. It aimed for nothing less than a complete economic union so that goods, people, and capital would be able to pass over national boundaries of member countries as freely as they move within any one country. As the Community's target date of 1992 for economic integration draws closer, the need for information, both current and historical, becomes more urgent. The aim of this annotated bibliography is to create a critical and descriptive list of books published mainly in English for businessmen and analysts, combining older publications with new. The literature on the EC is vast and issues The Community itself nearly 3000 publications a year. The range of material covered in this volume is distinguished by its great scope. Historical sections provide listings on the postwar years of economic recovery, the development of the EC, and biographies of the leading personalities involved. Policy-oriented sections encompass such subjects as labor, transportation, environment, energy, and education. The political ramifications of economic union, financial and fiscal affairs, relations between the EC and the Third World, and foreign relations in general are dealt with in separate sections. The volume concludes with a listing of major European Community publications. The sheer bulk of published material on the EC, much of it duplication, has made keeping up with its developments difficult for small and medium in Europe and elsewhere. This invaluable sourcebook will provide the business community and the political establishments with better access to EC information as they grapple with the implications of 1992.

Book European Foreign Policy and the European Parliament in the 1990s

Download or read book European Foreign Policy and the European Parliament in the 1990s written by Donatella M. Viola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: This book investigates the European Parliament’s stance vis-a-vis the 1990-1991 Gulf and 1991-1992 Yugoslav crises. In unveiling the parliamentary multi-faceted view of these events, reference has been made to the positions taken by constituent political groups and their voting behaviour. In particular, the following questions have been addressed: has the European Parliament sought to define and shape a common foreign policy with respect to the above crises? What specific functions have the European Parliament political groups performed? Have political groups succeeded in achieving an internal cohesion? Has the European Parliament overcome divisions among its members through the formation of party coalitions? despite the considerable flow of published material on external relations of the European Union and the European Parliament, virtually no study has explored in-depth the links between these two areas. The purpose of this book is to fill the gap in the existing literature, breaking new ground by combining a qualitative and qualitative analysis of parliamentary behaviour with foreign policy.

Book The Theory and Practice of Institutional Transplantation

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Institutional Transplantation written by M. de Jong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inevitably, at a panel discussion not too long ago comparing planning cultures the discussion turned on the issue of globalisation. As a member of the panel, this author asked those in the audience who lived and/or worked in a country different from their country of origin to raise their hands. About half of the audience of well over one hundred academic teachers and researchers from all comers of the world, the present author included did so. Next he asked who had a spouse or partner from a country different from their country of origin to also raise their hands. About half of the audience, the present author included, raised their hands. This is the soft side of globalisation. The soft side of globalisation is important. Exchanges, personal mobility, international romances, multi-culturalism and multi-lingualism (inevitably meaning non-native speakers struggling to keep up with native English speakers) are part of the academic scene, so much so that we can hardly imagine it to be otherwise. These are not entirely new phenomena, but they have become ever more prominent, relying on an ever more elaborate institutional infrastructure of exchange programmes, international journals, associations and the global conference industry. It was at the AESOP (Association of European Schools of Planning) congress at Bmo in the Czech Republic in July 2000 that the plan for this book was hatched.

Book The European Parliament s Role in Closer EU Integration

Download or read book The European Parliament s Role in Closer EU Integration written by R. Corbett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 20 years after it first became an elected institution, it is time to assess the impact of the European Parliament on the process of European integration. This book does so, beginning with an analysis of what integration theorists expected of the directly elected Parliament when such an idea was still on the drawing board and then examining what the Parliament has achieved in practice. It concludes that the Parliament has been extremely significant, though not always in the ways initially expected.

Book The 1994 Elections to the European Parliament

Download or read book The 1994 Elections to the European Parliament written by Juliet Lodge and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1996 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis of the 1994 Euro-elections is written by authorities with an understanding both of the background to the European Union and of current events. The contributors are also aware of why the 1994 Euro-elections are the first of a new style of election: they are the first to be conducted in the European Union and after the European Parliament has enjoyed an appreciable change in its legislative powers, following the introduction of the cooperation procedure under the Single Act and the co-decision procedure under the Maastricht Treaty; they are the first to be conducted in a European Union preoccupied with the classic questions of political discourse - they form part of a continuing dialogue as to how best to realize and reconcile democratic practices and open government with efficient and effective decision-making.

Book Intra Party Politics and Coalition Governments

Download or read book Intra Party Politics and Coalition Governments written by Daniela Giannetti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-10-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how intra-party politics affects government formation and termination in parliamentary systems, where the norm is the formation of coalition governments. The authors look beyond party cohesion and discipline in parliamentary democracies to take a broader view, assuming a diversity of preferences among party members and then exploring the incentives that give rise to coordinated party behaviour at the electoral, legislative and executive levels. The chapters in this book share a common analytical framework, confronting theoretical models of government formation with empirical data, some drawn from cross-national analyses and others from theoretically structured case studies. A distinctive feature of the book is that it explores the impact of intra-party politics at different levels of government: national, local and EU. This offers the opportunity to investigate existing theories of coalition formation in new political settings. Finally, the book offers a range of innovative methods for investigating intra-party politics which, for example, creates a need to estimate the policy positions of individual politicians inside political parties. This book will be of interest to political scientists, especially scholars involved in research on political parties, parliamentary systems, coalition formation and legislative behaviour, multilevel governance, European and EU politics.
