THE PEACEFUL END IN THE COMMUNION OF THE CATHOLIC CHUECH. OUR aged priest, after his sad and repented blunder, lived on some five years; still prayed, still preached, still loved. And his love for the dear old Church grew stronger and stronger as the light of the New Jerusalem streamed in upon his ripening soul. The only cloud on his horizon was the dread lest, after his decease, some of his followers--he feared perhaps "a third" of them--should leave the Church. Dear, credulous heart! He little knew; he little knew! But he left it on record that if they left the Church, they left him, and God would leave them. When his friend, Alexander Knox, asked him how he would wish his friends to act in case the Methodists should withdraw from the Church, his answer was: "I WOULD HAVE THEM ADHEBE TO THE Chubch And Leave The Methodists." Fifteen months before his death, he said: "I never had any design of separating from the Church. I have no such design now I declare once more that I live and die a member of the Church of England; and that None WHO BEGABD MY JUDGMENT OB ADVICE WILL Eveb Sepabate Pbom It."--(December 11, 1789)." The calm and the peace of Paradise were now upon him. He kneels on Jordan's brink awaiting the Master's call. His last words are, "Bless the Church and King, and grant us truth and peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord."--"Farewell." The active brain, the tireless body, the loving heart of the Anglican zealot are at rest forevermore. He was taken away from the evil to come. He did not live to see his lay-preachers usurping the priesthood, and mutilating their found er's tomb.52 He did not live to see inexcusable apostacy sweeping not "the third part," but nearly the whole, of his followers from the Catholic...

WHAT I purpose in the following pages is, to give a plain and distinct account of the steps by which I was led, during the course of many years, to embrace the doctrine of Christian Perfection. This I owe to the serious part of mankind; those who desire to know all the truth as it is in Jesus. And these only are concerned with questions of this kind. To these I would nakedly declare the thing as it is, endeavoring all along to show, from one period to another, both what I thought, and why I thought so."

Book excerpt: Timeless Teachings of John Wesley for the Modern-Day Christian John Wesley’s Teachings is the first systematic exposition of John Wesley's theology that encompasses all of his writings. Wesley was a prolific writer and commentator on Scripture—his collected works fill twenty-four volumes—and yet it is commonly held that he was not systematic or consistent in his theology and teachings. On the contrary, Thomas C. Oden demonstrates that Wesley displayed a remarkable degree of internal consistency over sixty years of preaching and ministry. This series of four volumes is a text-by-text guide to John Wesley’s teaching. It introduces Wesley’s thought on the basic tenets of Christian teaching: God and providence (volume 1), Christ and salvation (volume 2), the practice of pastoral care (volume 3), and issues of ethics and society (volume 4). In everyday modern English, Oden clarifies Wesley’s explicit intent and communicates his meaning clearly to a contemporary audience. Both lay and professional readers will find this series useful for devotional reading, moral reflection, sermon preparation, and for referencing Wesley’s opinions on ecological recovery, moral relativism, enthusiasm, catholicity, experience, paradise, final justification, providence, and countless others.

They were written as need required: first, to preserve those who were in danger of being seduced from the plain Religion of the Bible and secondly, to recover those who had already fallen into the snare. His Treatise on 8571, is perhaps one of the most laboured of these performances: For he knew and respect.. Among his many publications, the book that best summarizes his teachings on holiness is A Plain Account of Christian Perfection, as believed and taught by the Reverend Mr. John Wesley, from the year 1725 to the year 1777. John Wesley's Theology of Perfection will offer specialized studies for those wanting to dig deeper into Wesley's theology of perfection. The third volume, John Wesley's Doctrine of Christian Perfection, will present in systematic format every facet of Wesley's views on perfection. The projected release for both volumes is 2006 and 2007. Together, these three volumes will present one of the most thorough and exhaustive studies ever done on Wesley's most beloved, yet, most controversial doctrine."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Thoughts of John Wesley: A Comprehensive Selection of the Living Thoughts of the Founder of Methodism as Contained in His Miscellaneous Works The works of Rev. John Wesley are a gold-mine of doctrine and instruction; but, like other gold-mines, they contain a few things which are not gold. The two volumes of his sermons are nearly all pure gold. His journals and correspondence are also rich and valuable. His miscellaneous writings, however, require some sifting before their circulation in this country can be much revived. There is so much of the controversial element in them, so much of personal or merely local reference having no present significance, and so much of general discussion and argumenta tion pertaining to the Old World of a century ago that Amer icans do not feel much interested in them. Many trivial matters are also to be found, and several of the important treatises, like the French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew grammars, have become obsolete. But scattered along among these old documents are many liter ary and doctrinal gems of rarest value, needing only a new' typographical background, better mechanical finish, and more modern arrangement and setting to be. Appreciated at their worth and eagerly sought for by all good people. To separate these gems from their old surroundings, group them in convenient and attractive form, and to preserve them from loss in the transition has been the undertaking of the pres ent compiler.
