This broad spectrum of words and thoughts expressed within these pages is as vast as the people, observations, and situations that have inspired them. There are many people whose inspiration and influence run deep through the content, intent, contrast, and style of this book. The following is just a sample of some influential authors and prolific personalities without whom this book could not have been written: Wayne Dyer and Mark Twain, Will Rogers and Mr. Rogers (Fred), Oscar Wilde and Oscar Remick (Dad), and of course, John Lennon. Book Time Tide and History

Download or read book Time Tide and History written by Brigid Rooney and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time, Tide and History: Eleanor Dark’s Fiction is the first book-length edited collection of scholarly essays to treat the full span of Eleanor Dark’s fiction, advancing a recent revival of critical and scholarly interest in Dark’s writing. This volume not only establishes a new view of Dark’s fiction as a whole, but also reflects on the ways in which her fiction speaks to our present moment, in the context of a globally fraught, post-pandemic, Anthropocene era. Above all, the revisiting of Dark’s fiction is mandated by a desire to recognise the ways in which it anticipates vital debates in Australian literary and national culture today, about settler colonialism and its legacies, and with regard to the histories, condition and status of Australia’s First Nations people. This volume interweaves varied topical themes, from formal debates about modernism, historical realism and melodrama, to questions about modernity’s time and space, about gender and cultural difference, and about the specifics of built and natural environments. Time, Tide and History intentionally loosens the conventions of literary scholarship by including other kinds of work alongside critical and scholarly readings: a written dialogue between two contemporary historians about Dark’s legacy, and a biographical piece on the life and role of Eleanor Dark’s husband, Eric Payten Dark. Bringing together the interwar fiction’s feminist and modernist dimensions with the historical turn of The Timeless Land trilogy, the essays in Time, Tide and History collectively pursue ethical and political questions while teasing out the distinctive thematic, formal and aesthetic features of Dark’s fiction.

Book excerpt: Young, vivacious Joanna Bennett desperately wishes to be captain of her own lobstering boat, but despite being the favored daughter of Bennett’s Island’s founding family, she is still just a girl in the eyes of the community, and a girl living off the coast of Maine in the early 20th century is expected to mind the kitchen, not tend to pot buoys. While quietly struggling to find her place on insular Bennett’s Island, one where she could let her bold and opinionated nature shine without shaming her family, Joanna instead finds love when she meets a witty stranger with a sparkling smile just off the mailboat. One whirlwind courtship and wedding later, Joanna finds herself master of her own house, and every aspect of her beloved island seems to reflect her joy. But when the luster begins to wear off and her husband’s dark secrets slowly reveal themselves, Joanna must draw on her determination, resilience, and resourcefulness to keep her family together. This evocative coming-of-age story transports readers to the beautiful and rugged Maine coast, where families must eke their livelihoods from the tempestuous ocean but in return they’re afforded the daily splendor and simple pleasures of island life.

Book The Great Western Beach

Download or read book The Great Western Beach written by Emma Smith and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ______________ 'Emma Smith has written a book that should - and I hope does - endure as a classic among memoirs of childhood. I savoured every page' - Miranda Seymour, Evening Standard 'A wonderful book, full of unexpected effects, and I suspect that it will become a classic of the genre ... so sincerely compassionate that I honestly can't read it without weeping' - Lynne Truss, Sunday Times 'Evocative, witty and profoundly moving' - Daily Telegraph 'Deserves to become an overnight classic and to find a home at holiday cottage bedsides from St. Ives to Great Yarmouth' - Patrick Gale, author of Notes on an Exhibition ______________ The Great Western Beach is Emma Smith's wonderfully atmospheric memoir of a 1920s childhood in Newquay, Cornwall. She recalls the rocks, the sea, the beaches, the picnics, the teas and pasties, the bracing walks, the tennis tournaments and bathing parties, the curious residents and fascinating holiday-makers - relishing every glorious, salty detail. But above all this is a portrait of a family from the astonishingly clear-eyed perspective of a nine-year-old girl: her furious, frustrated father, perpetually on his way to becoming a world famous artist but suffering the indignity of being a lowly bank clerk; her beautiful, unperceptive mother, made for better things perhaps but at least, with three fiancés killed in the Great War, married with children at last; the twins, fearless, defiant Pam and sickly, bewildered Jim, for whom life is always an uphill climb, and baby Harvey, brought on the same winds of change that mean that life, with all its complication and wonder, cannot stay still and the Cornish playground of Emma's childhood will one day be lost forever.

Book excerpt: Alexia Tarabotti, Lady Maccon, has settled into domestic bliss. Of course, being Alexia, such bliss involves integrating werewolves into London High society, living in a vampire's second best closet, and coping with a precocious toddler who is prone to turning supernatural willy-nilly. Until, that is, she receives a summons that cannot be ignored. With husband, child, and Tunstells in tow, Alexia boards a steamer to cross the Mediterranean. But Egypt may hold more mysteries than even the indomitable Lady Maccon can handle. What does the vampire Queen of the Alexandria Hive really want from her? Why is the God-Breaker Plague suddenly expanding? And how has Ivy Tunstell suddenly become the most popular actress in all the British Empire? Timeless is the final book of the Parasol Protectorate series: a comedy of manners set in Victorian London, full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.
