Book excerpt: Author's abstract: In the sports domain, research has become an essential part of how we understand the psychological factors that play a key role in maximizing performance. Previous research has suggested that an individual’s performance can be highly influenced by the psychological variable of self-efficacy (e.g., Bandura, 1997; Calmels & Fournier, 2001). Self-efficacy has been used to describe individuals’ perceived capability of achieving a certain level of performance in the domain of sport (Feltz, 1998). Previous research has also demonstrated that the tendency of athletes to interpret their imagery as either facilitative or debilitative affects specific constructs known to enhance or impede sport performance (Nordin & Cumming, 2005; Quinton et al., 2016; Short et al., 2002). As a result, this study aimed to evaluate imagery more broadly by including different types of involuntary imagery (i.e. spontaneous, intrusive). Affective states of individuals when performing an activity is one of the most important variables for determining general self-efficacy (Bandura, 1994). The relationship between self-efficacy and MG-M imagery has also been closely examined, which suggests that the use of MG-M imagery is beneficial for increasing athletes’ self-efficacy levels (Martin et al., 1999; Moritz at al., 1996). The purpose of the present study was to examine the predictive relationship between imagery use (i.e., MG-M, spontaneous, and intrusive) and self-efficacy with affect as the mediator in collegiate athletes. It was hypothesized that affect would significantly mediate the relationship between imagery use and self-efficacy in collegiate athletes. Results found that positive affect significantly mediates the relationship between MG-M imagery and self-efficacy. The present findings suggest that positive affect is an essential construct for how MG-M imagery use effects self-efficacy levels in collegiate athletes.The implementation of MG-M imagery-based interventions may be used as a way to effectively increase an athlete’s self-efficacy perceptions.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Self-efficacy has been shown to be a significant predictor in an athlete's performance. Research has also suggested that imagery has been demonstrated to serve as a significant variable influencing self-efficacy within athlete samples. The addition of a poly-sensory video (PSV) is thought to potentially help with imagery ability as well through the incorporation of modeling and initiating thoughts of scenarios and tasks that the athlete is trying to image. It may also enhance vividness of the environment as well as utilize sources of self-efficacy. While studies have demonstrated improvements in self-efficacy through imagery little to none has looked at a PSV with the use of MG-M imagery as a complete intervention. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of a PSV that incorporated MG-M imagery in improving self-efficacy and imagery ability in NCAA Division I female soccer players. It was hypothesized that there would be an increase in both an athlete's self-efficacy and imagery ability over the course of the intervention compared to their baseline phase. It is also expected that after the intervention is withdrawn, there would be a change in participants' post-intervention baseline scores in relation to their original baseline results. The participants consisted of six NCAA, Division I female soccer players from a southeastern university. The results suggested that all six participants increased their mastery imagery ability during the intervention yet two participants scored dropped below the original baseline during the return to baseline. Self-efficacy in competition increased for four out of the six participants during the intervention and five out of the six had higher scores during the return to baseline than scored in the initial baseline. Examining self-efficacy in practice revealed five out of the six participants had higher scores in the intervention and only four out of the six had higher return to baseline scores that initial baseline scores. Results supported the notion that the use of a PSV with MG-M imagery as an intervention can potentially increase self-efficacy and imagery ability.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Context: Self-efficacy plays a significant role in influencing sport performance (Moritz, et al., 2000) and has been shown to be a stronger predictor of sport performance compared to anxiety, perceived control, and one's personal goals (Feltz & Lirg, 2001). The use of motivational general-mastery (MG-M) imagery has been shown to increase self-efficacy among athletic populations (O, et al., 2014); however, there is a paucity of research regarding the influence of imagery, particularly individualized MG-M imagery, on the self-efficacy of youth athletes specifically. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of an individualized MG-M imagery intervention on the self-efficacy and MG-M imagery use of youth gymnasts (Mage = 10.40). A single-subject, ABA design spanning seven total weeks was employed with five youth gymnasts who competed at a level six or above, as sanctioned by USA Gymnastics, and who had at least one year of competitive experience. Participants received individualized MG-M imagery scripts and engaged in guided imagery sessions along with independent imagery practice. Measures assessed athletes' MG-M imagery use, imagery ability, and self-efficacy specific to training. Visual inspection of the graphed data indicated improvements in self-efficacy from baseline through the intervention for one of the five participants. Effect sizes were also used to evaluate the magnitude of changes in mean and variability among phases. Both self-efficacy and imagery use scores decreased in variability, evidencing more stability from baseline to the intervention phase for two out of the five participants for self-efficacy and four of the five participants for imagery use. Implications from this study provide direction for practitioners and researchers regarding the development and implementation of MG-M imagery interventions in order to increase youth athletes' selfefficacy and imagery use.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to explore the effects of a multiple script imagery intervention on athletes' task and coping self-efficacy during injury rehabilitation. A multiple baseline design was used to assess for changes in rehabilitation self-efficacy over time. After completing a baseline phase, five adult (Mage = 29.4; SD = 9.6), competitive athletes engaged in a single guided imagery session with the lead researcher. Afterwards, participants were given four imagery audio recordings pertaining to healing, rehabilitation process, motivational, and pain management, and were instructed to listen to them 4 times per week for a range of approximately 2 to 4 weeks with autonomy in choice of which recording they used. Through visual analysis of trendline data, one participant experienced an increase in task and coping self-efficacy during the treatment phase, three participants experienced stable task and coping self-efficacy during the baseline and treatment phases, and one participant experienced a decrease in task and coping self-efficacy during the treatment phase. Athletes chose healing imagery most often during their rehabilitation phase. Qualitative reports indicated that participants felt practicing imagery helped them view their injury and rehabilitation process more positively and increased their hope and confidence for a full return to sport. High baseline task and coping efficacy could indicate the imagery helped participants retain their high levels of rehabilitation efficacy throughout their treatment as it is a factor that normally declines over the course of treatment in athletes.

The purpose of the current study was to determine the influence of a Physical, Emotion, Timing, Task, Learning, Environment, and Perspective (PETTLEP; Holmes & Collins, 2001) based imagery intervention on the imagery ability and self-efficacy of collegiate distance runners (N = 18). The participants completed baseline testing of imagery ability and received daily PETTLEP-based imagery scripts for four weeks. The imagery ability of the participants was tested two additional times over the course of the study, and the self-efficacy of participants was tested prior to four meets. Imagery ability was tested using the Sport Imagery Ability Questionnaire (SIAQ; Williams & Cumming, 2011), while a single question was created following the guidelines proposed by Bandura (2006) to measure self-efficacy. Six one-way repeated measures ANOVAs were used to determine differences on each subscale, and the global score of the SIAQ over three administrations, and a single one-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine differences over the four Self- Efficacy measurements. Significant differences were observed on two subscales of the SIAQ: Skill, F(2, 15) = 4.51, p = .049, and Strategy, F(2, 15) = 16.37, p = .002. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a three week imagery and video imagery intervention program on throwing accuracy performance of individual baseball pitchers. A secondary purpose of this study was to investigate if differences in accuracy response existed in low verses high ability imagers. A sample of pitchers (n=30) were asked to take the Movement Imagery Questionnaire- Revised and participants were randomly selected from the highest and lowest twenty percent of the group. The participants were obtained from high school and college level teams within the southeastern Georgia region (n= 6). Following the first week of baseline measurements, two high ability and two low ability imagers took part in a three week video imagery and imagery intervention program. Two participants of each imagery ability, served as the control group and were asked only try their best during throwing accuracy measurements. Results showed that two participants demonstrated an increase in performance, while all participants expressed a desire to continue to use imagery for its various effects. Suggestions for future research and further insight are discussed.
