Book Baghelkhand Or the Tigers Lair

Download or read book Baghelkhand Or the Tigers Lair written by David E. U. Baker and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of "region" and "nation" in Indian history through a long-term study of Bagelkhand - from prehistory up to 1956. It examines the ways in which the region eventually became part of the Indian nation (1947) and then the state of Madhya Pradesh (1956). The author sees region building as a process encompassing a dialogue between the region and external, often centralizing states on the one hand and migration on the other. While these two forces gave the region its distinct identity, they also paradoxically forged political, social, and economic commonalities with other regions of the country subject to similar influences. He pursues the theme of nation building from prehistory, through the centralizing Mauryan, Bupta, Mughal, British Empires to the Indian state. The book assesses the social, economic, and political impact of various colonialisms, rather than merely that of Britain, whose very difference colonialism was part of worldwide capitalism. It examines the regional aspects of power, which opposed but fell before the centralizing initiatives. Illustrated with rare visuals, this book would appeal to historians, political scientists, sociologists and anthropologists particularly those concerned with concepts like "region" and "nation."

Book The Glory Years of the Detroit Tigers

Download or read book The Glory Years of the Detroit Tigers written by William Martin Anderson and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines in text and vivid photographs a thirty-year span of Detroit Tigers baseball, from 1920 to 1950. In the three decades between 1920 and 1950, the Detroit Tigers won four American League pennants, the first world championship in team history in 1935, and a second world crown ten years later. Star players of this era--including Ty Cobb, Harry Heilmann, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Mickey Cochrane, George Kell, and Hal Newhouser--represent the majority of Tigers players inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sports writers followed the team feverishly, and fans packed Navin Field (later Briggs Stadium) to cheer on the high-flying Tigers, with the first record season attendance of one million recorded in 1924 and surpassed eight more times before 1950. In The Glory Years of the Detroit Tigers: 1920-1950, author William M. Anderson combines historical narrative and photographs of these years to argue that these years were the greatest in the history of the franchise. Anderson presents over 350 unique and lively images, mostly culled from the remarkable Detroit News archive, that showcase players' personalities as well as their exploits on the field. For their meticulous coverage and colorful style, Anderson consults Tigers reporting from the three daily Detroit newspapers of the era (the Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, and Detroit Times) and the Sporting News, which was known then as the "Baseball Bible." Some especially compelling columns are reproduced intact to give readers a feel for the exciting and careful reporting of these years. Anderson combines historical text with photos in six topical chapters: "Spring Training: When Dreams are Entertained," "Franchise Stars," "The Supporting Cast," "Moments of Glory and Notable Games," "The War Years," and "The Old Ballpark: Where Legends and Memories Were Made." Anderson presents sketches of many fine players who have been overlooked in other histories and visits characters who often acted in strange ways: Dizzy Trout, Gee Walker, Elwood "Boots" "The Baron" Poffenbeger, and Louis "Bobo" "Buck" Newsom. Tigers fans and anyone interested in local sports culture will enjoy this comprehensive and compelling look into the glory years of Tigers history.

Trudy and her parents agree to join the Bhutanese Adventure to give their trip the appearance of an innocent photojournalism/fly-fishing expedition. But their presence in Bhutan is soon discovered by a spy of Chin's, who tracks them, hoping to lure them into a false sense of security before ensnaring them. The journey to save the Bhutanese will require all of Jeff's and Trudy's strength and courage, not to mention their fly-fishing skills to make their story plausible. But will it be enough? Follow Jeff Thornton on his Bhutanese Adventure, the third novel in Jack L. Parker's adventure travel series.

Book The Monsters Know What They re Doing

Download or read book The Monsters Know What They re Doing written by Keith Ammann and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular blog The Monsters Know What They’re Doing comes a compilation of villainous battle plans for Dungeon Masters. In the course of a Dungeons & Dragons game, a Dungeon Master has to make one decision after another in response to player behavior—and the better the players, the more unpredictable their behavior! It’s easy for even an experienced DM to get bogged down in on-the-spot decision-making or to let combat devolve into a boring slugfest, with enemies running directly at the player characters and biting, bashing, and slashing away. In The Monsters Know What They’re Doing, Keith Ammann lightens the DM’s burden by helping you understand your monsters’ abilities and develop battle plans before your fifth edition D&D game session begins. Just as soldiers don’t whip out their field manuals for the first time when they’re already under fire, a DM shouldn’t wait until the PCs have just encountered a dozen bullywugs to figure out how they advance, fight, and retreat. Easy to read and apply, The Monsters Know What They're Doing is essential reading for every DM.

Book The Hmong of China

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicholas Tapp
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2021-10-11
  • ISBN : 9004489444
  • Pages : 560 pages

Download or read book The Hmong of China written by Nicholas Tapp and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first ethnography of the Hmong in China is based on Nicholas Tapp’s extensive fieldwork in a Hmong village in Sichuan. Basing his analysis on the concepts of context and agency, Tapp discusses the “paradoxical ambivalence at the heart of Hmong culture.” A paradox arises in the historical and ethnographic construction of the identity of the Hmong by conscious contrast with, and in opposition to, a majority Han Chinese identity at the same time that large parts of Hmong culture are shared with the Chinese and may be the results of historical processes of adoption, absorption, mimesis, or emulation. Tapp examines the Hmong rituals of shamanism, ancestral respect, and death and provides details on livelihood, kinship, local organization, and intellectual culture. The book is enhanced with thorough accounts of ceremonies, rituals, and folktales, with translations of Hmong songs and stories. This publication has also been published in paperback (no longer available).
