Book The A to Z of the Seventh Day Adventists

Download or read book The A to Z of the Seventh Day Adventists written by Gary Land and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-07-16 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the Millerite movement of the 1830s and 1840s, sabbatarian Adventism prior to organization of the denomination, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church since its organization in 1861-63, this volume provides a comprehensive history of the denomination. The first major element of the book is a chronology of Adventist history that begins with William Miller's conclusion in 1818 that the Second Advent of Jesus would occur about 1843 and extends through the Science and Theology Conferences of 2002-04. The interpretive introduction that follows places the emergence of Adventism within the context of the Second Great Awakening, describes the development of sabbatarian Adventism from its early opposition to church organization to its highly institutionalized and bureaucratically structured contemporary form, and examines the denomination's geographical expansion from a small North American sect to a global church. The dictionary entries that constitute the bulk of the volume address individuals, organizations, institutions, and doctrines that have been important in the history of the church, including dissident movements and individuals who have emerged as critics of the denomination and its beliefs. Second, there are entries on the development and current situation of Adventism in many individual countries. Finally, thematic entries on such subjects as art, music, literature, health care, and women address other elements important to understanding church life. The dictionary entries are followed by a bibliography of scholarly and popular works published by the denomination, commercial and academic presses, and individuals and organizations.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Seventh Day Adventists

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Seventh Day Adventists written by Gary Land and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventh-day Adventism was born as a radical millenarian sect in nineteenth-century America. It has since spread across the world, achieving far more success in Latin America, Africa, and Asia than in its native land. In what seems a paradox, Adventist expectation of Christ’s imminent return has led the denomination to develop extensive educational, publishing, and health systems. Increasingly established within a variety of societies, Adventism over time has modified its views on many issues and accommodated itself to the “delay” of the Second Advent. In the process, it has become a multicultural religion that nonetheless reflects the dominant influence of its American origins. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Seventh-Day Adventists covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on key people, cinema, politics and government, sports, and critics of Ellen White. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Seventh-day Adventism.

Book If I Were the Devil

Download or read book If I Were the Devil written by George R. Knight and published by Review and Herald Pub Assoc. This book was released on 2007 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some parts of the world it seems the Seventh-day Adventist Church is in danger of settling down into a social club. That is, unless it remembers its mission. With growing secularization, disorientation, and institutionalism, how can the church maintain its identity? How is the church to function considering it was founded on the belief that time is short-yet time keeps going on?Not just for church administrators and academics-this is a call to duty to all church members, a call to become a church alive with passion and purpose. Let these pages reinvigorate you with fresh thoughts about the Adventist mission and how to accomplish it. Because the world doesn't need another social club. It needs to hear God's message.

Known for both wisdom and overwork, he was president of three colleges at once, and founded or laid the groundwork for four (Union, Walla Walla, Newbold, and Avondale). He started out as a journalist. With a first-class education from Dartmouth, W.W. Prescott was soon editing a successful newspaper. The call to shepherd Battle Creek College involved a major pay cut. But over time he reshpaed the church's educational system and politics. Holding 11 different offices simultaneously, he initiated curriculum reforms (less classics, more Bible) that met with strong opposition. His organizational reforms triumphed in 1901. Book excerpt: Advance Praise for Why They Must Go A must read for everyone who loves and values our children and youth and wants to see them saved in Gods kingdom. Dr. Penny Lister Smith, Education Superintendent, South Atlantic Conference An excellent piece of reading material; I trust that it will reawaken the purpose of SDA education! Shakuntala Ramsarran, Education Superintendent, Southwest Region Conference I highly recommend the reading and study of Terrell McCoys new book (which) highlights the need for home, church, and school to work together in the preparation of our offspring to meet the challenges of life on this earth while also preparing the children that God has given us to live in Eternity with the Master Teacher. Dr. Doug Walker, Former Education Director, Southwestern Union An outgrowth of a series of sermons delivered on Christian education by author Terrell McCoy, Why They Must Go presents strong arguments for providing Seventh-day Adventist children with an Adventist education. Expounding on the purpose and the goals of a Christian education, McCoy argues that children are Gods property and they must be related to in Gods way. He urges parents to keep the church in church schools.

Book excerpt: In "PRONER: The Mechanics of Leadership," Fouad Kanneh offers a profound exploration of leadership through the lens of personal tragedy, historical evolution, and contemporary demands. This compelling book is divided into three insightful parts, each contributing to a holistic understanding of what it means to lead in today's complex world. Part One: A Personal Journey - The opening section is a deeply personal narrative, recounting Fouad's struggle to balance professional responsibilities while grieving the loss of a son. Despite the support from friends and colleagues, the void remained, and returning to work brought both solace and an ever-present pain. This candid introduction sets the stage for a broader discussion on the human side of leadership and the resilience required to lead through personal adversity. Part Two: The Evolution of Society and Leadership - The second part delves into the historical evolution of society and leadership, tracing its development from the Renaissance and Agricultural Revolution through the Industrial Revolution, culminating in the Information Revolution. By examining these pivotal eras, Fouad Kanneh highlights the continuity and change in leadership styles and practices, providing a rich historical context for understanding modern leadership dynamics. Part Three: “The Thinking Behind Modern Leadership” - The final section focuses on the current era—the Information Revolution—and the specific demands it places on leaders. It explores the necessity of various types of thinking, including systems thinking, sustainability thinking, strategic thinking, and servant leadership. Fouad discusses how these modes of thought are essential for navigating the complexities of today's world and driving meaningful development. "PRONER: The Mechanics of Leadership" is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the intricacies of leadership across different historical periods and the specific challenges of leading in the information age. With its blend of personal experience, historical analysis, and practical insights, this book offers valuable lessons for leaders at all levels.
