Book excerpt: From the author of the Fairacre series: “The more turbulent the real world, the more charming we may find the stability of Miss Read’s tiny fictional world.” —Los Angeles Times Thrush Green is never quite as quiet as it first appears. When a local, long-empty cottage called Tullivers shows signs of occupancy, the village whispers in excitement. Phil, a lovely woman with a young son, has been deserted by her husband and quickly attracts the attention of the villagers—and the interest of several bachelors. Harold Shoosmith gives both advice and practical help in the garden, while Winnie Bailey’s nephew, Richard, offers his assistance with household repairs and takes Phil for a drive to London. When Phil receives some unexpected news, her new freedom brings even more changes to her life—and a new love to Thrush Green.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the 162 species of thrush, one of the most widespread and well-known families of birds in the world. This is the first book for almost a century solely devoted to thrushes, one of the most widespread and well-known bird families. It is a comprehensive treatment of the world's 162 species of true thrush and includes many of the most familiar garden species, as well as some of the rarest, most elusive and least known of all birds. This family also includes, as may be expected, some of the bird world's most accomplished songsters. Thrushes contains detailed information on identification and distribution, with a full description of each species, including reference to all recognised races, with emphasis given to vocalisations, which are often of key importance in determining speciation. Other sections deal with habitat and range, movements (many species are long-distance migrants), and breeding behaviour. For the first time, all species in the family Turdidae are illustrated in full colour, with a series of supplementary line drawings depicting particular aspects of shape or plumage. The 60 colour plates comprise approximately 540 images, illustrating adults, immatures, and most of the distinctive races. The plates are accompanied by colour maps showing the breeding and wintering range for each species. Thrushes is a wonderful addition to the award-winning Helm Identification Guide series, and will surely become the standard reference work to these birds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2008 Washington State Book Award for History/Biography In traditional scholarship, Native Americans have been conspicuously absent from urban history. Indians appear at the time of contact, are involved in fighting or treaties, and then seem to vanish, usually onto reservations. In Native Seattle, Coll Thrush explodes the commonly accepted notion that Indians and cities-and thus Indian and urban histories-are mutually exclusive, that Indians and cities cannot coexist, and that one must necessarily be eclipsed by the other. Native people and places played a vital part in the founding of Seattle and in what the city is today, just as urban changes transformed what it meant to be Native. On the urban indigenous frontier of the 1850s, 1860s, and 1870s, Indians were central to town life. Native Americans literally made Seattle possible through their labor and their participation, even as they were made scapegoats for urban disorder. As late as 1880, Seattle was still very much a Native place. Between the 1880s and the 1930s, however, Seattle's urban and Indian histories were transformed as the town turned into a metropolis. Massive changes in the urban environment dramatically affected indigenous people's abilities to survive in traditional places. The movement of Native people and their material culture to Seattle from all across the region inspired new identities both for the migrants and for the city itself. As boosters, historians, and pioneers tried to explain Seattle's historical trajectory, they told stories about Indians: as hostile enemies, as exotic Others, and as noble symbols of a vanished wilderness. But by the beginning of World War II, a new multitribal urban Native community had begun to take shape in Seattle, even as it was overshadowed by the city's appropriation of Indian images to understand and sell itself. After World War II, more changes in the city, combined with the agency of Native people, led to a new visibility and authority for Indians in Seattle. The descendants of Seattle's indigenous peoples capitalized on broader historical revisionism to claim new authority over urban places and narratives. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Native people have returned to the center of civic life, not as contrived symbols of a whitewashed past but on their own terms. In Seattle, the strands of urban and Indian history have always been intertwined. Including an atlas of indigenous Seattle created with linguist Nile Thompson, Native Seattle is a new kind of urban Indian history, a book with implications that reach far beyond the region. Book Christmas at Thrush Green

Download or read book Christmas at Thrush Green written by Miss Read and published by Orion. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brand new Miss Read novel, set in the Cotswold village of Thrush Green at Christmas. The villagers of Thrush Green celebrate Christmas traditionally, in a way that has hardly changed over the generations. Children eagerly hang up their stockings, families go to church together and everyone enjoys the treats of the festive season. And when it snows as the carol singers make their way round the cottages on the green, it looks as if Christmas will be perfect this year. But not everything is as peaceful as it seems. Phyllida and Frank have their work cut out for them when they agree to take on the Nativity play - made all the more difficult by an outbreak of chicken pox. The indomitable Ella has lived in Thrush Green for as long as anyone can remember, but lately she has been behaving strangely. Then there are the dreadful Burwells, newcomers to Thrush Green, who cause something of a stir with their 'home improvements'. For Nelly, owner of The Fuchsia Bush tea shop, Christmas is an especially busy time, with people dropping in for much-needed refreshment, weary from all their Christmas shopping. But then she receives an unexpected letter.

Book I Am Elijah Thrush

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Purdy
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2022-10-04
  • ISBN : 1531501249
  • Pages : 91 pages

Download or read book I Am Elijah Thrush written by James Purdy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On its surface, I Am Elijah Thrush is the story of Millicent De Frayne and her sensational half-century campaign to win the love of Elijah Thrush. Elijah, after ruining the lives of countless men and women, is finally in love “incorrectly, if not indecently,” with his great-grandson, Bird of Heaven. To support an unusual habit, a young Black man, Albert Peggs, reluctantly agrees to tell their remarkable story. It is in this telling that the ambitions, desires, and true natures of Elijah, Millicent, and Albert come to light. With a delicately controlled balance of whimsy and pathos, James Purdy gives us this comedy of the heroic, the tragic, and the truly bizarre. Met with critical bewilderment upon its initial publication fifty years ago, this new edition offers a Foreword by Robert J. Corber illuminating Purdy’s “complicated allegory” of objectification, desire, and race in the immediate post–civil rights moment.

Book Affairs at Thrush Green

Download or read book Affairs at Thrush Green written by Miss Read and published by HMH. This book was released on 2002-11-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make a visit to this English village: “What you will find in the novels of Miss Read is an aura of warm happiness.” —The Columbus Dispatch In the quaint English village of Thrush Green, a terrible fire has burned the rectory to the ground. Now, kindly vicar Charles Henstock has been appointed to the neighboring town of Lulling and its combined parishes. But while he enjoys the beautiful Queen Anne house provided for him, and his pleasant new surroundings, going to a new church is never easy: Poor Dr. Henstock has encountered some very redoubtable females in Lulling; a full-scale power struggle erupts over the question of kneeling cushions for the Lady Chapel; and other difficulties revolve around the crotchety old sexton Albert Piggott. Meanwhile, a mysterious stranger arrives at the Fuschia Bush café, and its rivalry with the Two Pheasants becomes more acute. One knows, however, that Miss Read will set everything right in the end. “Affairs at Thrush Green will surely delight all those addicted to Miss Read . . . and may well make converts of those who read her here for the first time.” —The Plain Dealer

Download or read book Sacred Song of the Hermit Thrush written by Tehanetorens and published by 7th Generation. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long ago, when the birds had no songs, only man could sing. When the Great Spirit walked on the Earth, he noticed a great silence. He realized the birds had no songs. He devised a challenge and told the birds who ever could fly the highest, would receive a very beautiful song. But not all the birds were honest. In his desire to win the game, the small hermit thrush jumped on the back of the great eagle. The eagle flew higher than any of the birds, but when he came back to land, the Great Spirit said the hermit thrush had gone the highest since he was on eagle’s back. Hermit Thrush was awarded a beautiful song, but in his shame for not being honest, he flew into the deep woods. To this day, you may hear the lovely song of the hermit thrush, but you may not ever see him.
