Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are burying ourselves in our own waste. It’s befouling our air, land, waters, food, and bodies. The US tosses out enough foodstuff to feed the rest of the world. America is the largest buyer of fashion and cosmetics, the second dirtiest industry in the world. We lead the planet in transportation usage and waste, and we’re now polluting outer space. Throwaway Nation takes a look at the pileup of waste in the US, including the problem of plastic, the industry of overmedication, e-waste products, everyday garbage, fast fashion trash, space waste, and other forms of profligacy that serve to make our nation the biggest waster on the planet. Looking at the environmental impact of so much garbage, Dondero explores not just how we got here and where we’re headed, but ways in which we might be able to curb the tide. From what you do and don’t eat, what and how your products are packaged, the rampant production of clothes, the space and waste in which you work, live, what you breath, eat, drink, the tools you use to work and play, the energy overproduced and ill-used for a pleasant lifestyle, the waste you generate, and how humans are beginning to clutter the cosmos—all and more are profiled in the Throwaway Nation—and what we ought to do to prohibit and mitigate the flow of our garbage and to use it productively.

Book A South You Never Ate

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and stretching from Hampton Roads to Assateague Island, Virginia's Eastern Shore is a distinctly southern place with an exceptionally southern taste. In this inviting narrative, Bernard L. Herman welcomes readers into the communities, stories, and flavors that season a land where the distance from tide to tide is often less than five miles. Blending personal observation, history, memories of harvests and feasts, and recipes, Herman tells of life along the Eastern Shore through the eyes of its growers, watermen, oyster and clam farmers, foragers, church cooks, restaurant owners, and everyday residents. Four centuries of encounter, imagination, and invention continue to shape the foodways of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, melding influences from Indigenous peoples, European migrants, enslaved and free West Africans, and more recent newcomers. Herman reveals how local ingredients and the cooks who have prepared them for the table have developed a distinctly American terroir--the flavors of a place experienced through its culinary and storytelling traditions. This terroir flourishes even as it confronts challenges from climate change, declining fish populations, and farming monoculture. Herman reveals this resilience through the recipes and celebrations that hold meaning, not just for those who live there but for all those folks who sit at their tables--and other tables near and far.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Away from home in New York, Tabitha Douglas, an unwise, transitioning teenager in 1921, still wants the best for her newborn son and strongly believes it begins with his name, which she has not decided upon. After accepting that she has broken the cardinal rule of unwedded birth, she struggles to start well her son's life. But after abandoning her parents, the desperate girl meets seven complete strangers, much older, who are forced to help her because of their uncomfortable and even life threatening hostage situation where none of them can leave. They end up helping one another and eventually becoming friends. With their help, Tabitha gives her son a name, and he eventually becomes a success because of the help of those mentors in his life. Born in the "country" town of Magnolia, AR, growing up, I enjoyed stories and eventually began creating my own. My favorite aspect of writing is that by it, I can share a few stories of mine without displaying my "country" accent. Such things about myself as this, I find humorous my accent, my simplistic thinking and my old soul. Nevertheless, such factors are vital in my writings. Since I began, it has been my goal to tame such a personality into a unique style and mix it with Christian ideas to make the perfect story. Age fourteen, I discovered my love for writing, and though, perhaps, I still have not discovered my gift for it, if there, I continue to do it anyway.

Book To Throw Away Unopened

Download or read book To Throw Away Unopened written by Viv Albertine and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE COSTA BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2018 What was I fighting for? Even now I'm not sure. Something so old and so deep, it has no words, no shape, no logic. Every memoir is a battle between reality and invention - but in her follow up to Clothes, Music, Boys, Viv Albertine has reinvented the genre with her unflinching honesty. To Throw Away Unopened is a fearless dissection of one woman's obsession with the truth - the truth about family, power, and her identity as a rebel and outsider. It is a gaping wound of a book, both an exercise in blood-letting and psychological archaeology, excavating what lies beneath: the fear, the loneliness, the anger. It is a brutal expose of human dysfunctionality, the impossibility of true intimacy, and the damage wrought upon us by secrets and revelations, siblings and parents. Yet it is also a testament to how we can rebuild ourselves and come to face the world again. It is a portrait of the love stories that constitute a life, often bringing as much pain as joy. With the inimitable blend of humour, vulnerability, and intelligence that makes Viv Albertine one of our finest authors working today, To Throw Away Unopened smashes through layers of propriety and leads us into a new place of savage self-discovery.
