Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: boy aged ten, traumatised by personal events, searches for a surrogate family to belong to. In lifes journey through to adulthood he discovers friendship and love, bigotry and hate. In a quest for answers he turns to the Law and the legal profession to balance the scales of his unstable past and a turbulent present. ...I knew our lives had changed forever. There was little likelihood of us returning back to our former status as a family. I felt the warmth of tears down my face and tried not to sob, though this was a natural reaction. I walked towards my mother and buried my head in her clothing. She cried piteously. I cried with her as we held onto each other dearly. Life, for us, would never be the same again.

Book The Three Faces of Zembeth

  • Author : Rowan Canterbury
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc
  • Release : 2019-05-17
  • ISBN : 1642988723
  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book The Three Faces of Zembeth written by Rowan Canterbury and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-05-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am the princess of elves. I once believed my life to be set in stone, as most often do from day to day. It matters not if we are a prince or pauper, elf or gnome; we understand where we fit in the grand scheme of things. The sun comes up, the sun goes down, and we are assured of our very reality through simple objects and gestures. My warning is complete and, hereinafter, is not to be ignored. Never get too comfortable! I was guarded, I lived in a palace, and I was dug in to privilege as secure as any badger in a hole. One such as I, one schooled in magic and the unknown, failed to see the impending avalanche of "could never happen to me" rolling down the hill of my delusions that eventually wiped out the princess of elves and left you, my readers, with the wild–eyed beast at the end of this lesson. The pages you now turn are the polished version of my erratic and terrified scribblings written whilst flailing amid my personal avalanche. I wrote when I was so terrified that I felt as though my guts were turning to something akin to hot pig fat dripping from a pot. I wrote in the wake of losing my mother, being framed for her murder, losing my people and my magic. I wrote while I learned to use fist and sword to defend my life, despite my fragile size and psyche. I might have lost most of my mind for a time, but damn it, I remembered to write! So hold back what you may have believed of my kind for now. If you see me again, in some far–off land, hesitate to draw your conclusions. Don't let my ghost–white skin, ruby eyes, and pointed ears seduce your impression of what I really am. I am a princess, I am an elf, and once you know the full story, perhaps you shall understand the impact of the avalanche. Meriden of Fairfax Princess of Elves

Book The Messenger

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian T. Atkinson
  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2019-10-18
  • ISBN : 1623497795
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The Messenger written by Brian T. Atkinson and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas singer-songwriter Hayes Carll declared, “Ray would be at the top of the list if I were gonna read about somebody’s life.” In The Messenger: The Songwriting Legacy of Ray Wylie Hubbard, author, journalist, and music producer Brian T. Atkinson demonstrates why Carll and so many others hold Ray Wylie Hubbard in such high regard. Atkinson takes readers into and beyond the seedy bar in Red River, New Mexico, where the incident occurred that inspired Hubbard’s most famous song, “Redneck Mother.” Hubbard tells the stories, and Atkinson enlists other musicians to expound on the nature of his abiding influence as songwriter, musician, and unflinching teller of uncomfortable truths. Featuring interviews with well-known artists such as Eric Church, Steve Earle, Kinky Friedman, Chris Robinson, and Jerry Jeff Walker, and also mining the insights of up-and-comers such as Elizabeth Cook, Jaren Johnston, Ben Kweller, Aaron Lee Tasjan, and Paul Thorn, The Messenger makes clear why so many musicians across a wide spectrum admire Ray Wylie Hubbard. Readers will also learn why “Redneck Mother,” the song that put Hubbard on the map for most listeners, is also a curse, of sorts, in its diminution of both his spiritual depth as a lyricist and his multidimensional musical reach. As Hubbard himself says, “The song probably should have never been written, let alone recorded, let alone recorded again.. . . the most important part of songwriting is right after you write a song, ask yourself, ‘Can I sing this for twenty-five years?’” Atkinson’s work makes a convincing case that Ray Wylie Hubbard’s truest and most lasting contributions will long outlive him. And, with a couple of good breaks, they may even outlive “Redneck Mother.”

Download or read book Three Faces of Saul written by Sarah Nicholson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2002-05-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating intertextual study of the classic biblical tragedy of Saul, the first king of Israel, as first narrated in biblical narrative and later reworked in Lamartine's drama Saul: Tragédie and Thomas Hardy's novel The Mayor of Casterbridge. Plot and characterization are each explored in detail in this study, and in each of the narrations the hero's tragic fate emerges both as the result of a character flaw and also as a consequence of the ambivalent role of the deity, showing a double theme underlying not only the biblical vision but also its two very different retellings nearer to our own times.
