An Esquire Best Book of the Year and a Miami Herald Best Crime Fiction Book of the Year Will, Jeffrey, and Nolan have been friends since their undergrad days at Princeton. Now, nine years after graduation, Will is a failed musician still reeling from the death of a bandmate. Jeffrey got lucky and then rich from the dot-com boom, and Nolan is a state senator with national aspirations. Through it all, their bond with each other has managed to survive—until one shocking event changes everything. One night on the road, they make a routine stop at a convenience store. Moments after entering the store, a manic Jeffrey emerges, dragging a young woman with him. He shoves her into Will’s car and shouts a single word: “Drive!” Shaken and confused, Will obeys. Suddenly these three men find themselves completely out of their element, holding a frightened young girl hostage without the slightest idea of what to do next. They’re already guilty of kidnapping and robbery; it’s only a matter of time before they find out what else they might be guilty of . . . “Will keep readers on the edge of their seats . . . As you read, you think you know which way the author is driving the narrative, only to have it swerve several times before the fascinating conclusion.” —Library Journal, starred review “A carefully calibrated study of how even the most highly evolved members of our species can become feral under pressure.” —The New York Times “Absolutely first-rate.” —John Lescroart

Book A Wicked Wild Three Day Affair

Download or read book A Wicked Wild Three Day Affair written by Nadia Aidan and published by Totally Entwined Group (USA+CAD). This book was released on 2009-07-13 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was supposed to be a three day affair, but Vegas lights, and wild, hot nights led to something so much more. Traditionally, a best man and maid of honor are there to support the happy couple, and keep them as calm as possible before their wedding, which is the only reason why Grant and Monica haven't traded blows, even if they can't stop trading insults. When Grant shows up to witness the quickie Vegas wedding of his best friend, he takes an instant disliking to the maid of honor, and the feeling is mutual. Monica knows her style of dress is a far cry from conservative, actually not even close, but she is not the superficial, vapid gold-digger that Grant seems to think she is. After years spent as a gangly, unattractive shy geek, she has finally embraced her body and refuses to let anyone trample upon her hard earned confidence, especially not an old-fashioned, chauvinist snob like Grant. From the moment they meet the fireworks fly, as they battle their attraction to each other, preferring to hide it behind their mutual animosity. But their attraction refuses to be ignored, sending them spiraling head first into a wicked, wild three day affair with more than enough heat to scorch the Las Vegas desert.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often called the ”Pulp Era”, the years between the two World Wars have seen a tremendous surge in interest among wargamers. A World Aflame captures the adventurous nature of the time period to present a fun, fast-paced set of tabletop miniatures rules that can handle the many diverse conflicts of the period, from the Chinese Civil Wars and the “Great Game” in Central Asia, to the Irish War of Independence and the bitter ideological warfare of the Russian and Spanish Civil Wars. The rules also contain options for the “Very British Civil War”. This gaming trend has sprung up in recent years, following a “what-if” scenario that has Edward VIII refusing to abdicate the throne, thrusting the country into civil war in 1938. It is a quirky, fun setting, and one that is surprisingly popular. Written by a life-long wargamer, A World Aflame focuses on the daring and heroism of battles fought in the last great era of adventure.

Book A New Chronology for the Kings of Israel and Judah and Its Implications for Biblical History and Literature

Download or read book A New Chronology for the Kings of Israel and Judah and Its Implications for Biblical History and Literature written by John H. Hayes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-06-08 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For generations, scholars have attempted to solve the chronological problems associated with the mysterious numbers of the Hebrew kings. In this volume, the authors provide a coherent, sensible, and believable chronology for the Israelite and Judean kings. In their reconstruction, Hayes and Hooker take into consideration not only all of the biblical data but also all relevant ancient Near Eastern sources. Utilizing all available and reliable evidence, they establish not only regnal years for all the rulers but also specific dates for numerous events in Israelite and Judean history. In their opening chapters, the authors explain the scheme of chronological reckoning found in the books of 1-2 Kings. Their calculations are then computed without recourse to shifting understandings of the methods of reckoning or to a theory of co-regencies. The value of this work is not limited to purely chronological matters. Its implications extend to the dating of biblical sources such as the Book of the Covenant, D, P, and the Deuteronomistic History. The volume also provides insights into the socio-cultic life of biblical times.

Book The 21st North Carolina Infantry

Download or read book The 21st North Carolina Infantry written by Lee W. Sherrill, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st North Carolina Troops (11th North Carolina Volunteers) was one of only two Tar Heel Confederate regiments that in 1865 could boast "From Manassas to Appomattox." The 21st was the only North Carolina regiment with Stonewall Jackson during his 1862 Valley Campaign and remained with the same division throughout the war. It participated in every major battle fought by the Army of Northern Virginia except the 1864 Overland Campaign, when General Lee sent it to fight its own intense battles near New Bern and Plymouth. This book is written from the perspective of the 1,942 men who served in the regiment and is filled with anecdotal material gleaned from more than 700 letters and memoirs. In several cases it sheds new light on accepted but often incorrect interpretations of events. Names such as Lee, Jackson, Hoke, Trimble, Hill, Early, Ramseur and Gordon charge through the pages as the Carolina regiment gains a name for itself. Suffering a 50 percent casualty rate over the four years, only 67 of the 920 young men and boys who began the war surrendered to Grant at its end.

Book No Depression 77

    Book Details:
  • Author : Grant Alden
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2009-02-01
  • ISBN : 0292719299
  • Pages : 145 pages

Download or read book No Depression 77 written by Grant Alden and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-02-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of its thirteen-year history as a beloved and decorated music magazine, No Depression sought to be an instrument of change: to draw attention to the deep well of American musical traditions; to shine a light on performers whose gifts far exceed the size of their audiences or their pocketbooks; and to provide a safe harbor for the best long-form writing about music on the newsstand. These traditions continue through No Depression's now semi-annual series of bookazines. The inaugural bookazine, numbered ND #76 so as to make explicit the continuity between No Depression's original and new formats, focused on the next generation of emerging roots music performers. ND #77, due out the spring of 2009, will center around the phrase "instruments of change," and the various ways in which those words may be interpreted. Early assignments include profiles of mandolinist Chris Thile by Seth Mnookin, Tejano accordion masters by Joe Nick Patoski, and A-Team bass player Bob Moore by Rich Kienzle, as well as essays on the strange journey of Dock Boggs' banjo and an activist's memory of Phil Ochs. No Depression first appeared during the fall of 1995 as a 32-page quarterly magazine. Ten years later it had become a 180-page glossy bimonthly. Along the way it became one of the most prominent publications to cover American roots music, starting from the intersection of country and rock 'n' roll and tracing the links to bluegrass, folk, blues, gospel, soul, jazz, indie rock, Cajun, conjunto, and beyond. No Depression grew to be acknowledged as one of the finest music magazines ever published, was compared often to the 1960s origins of Rolling Stone or the 1970s heyday of Creem, and received awards from the Utne Reader, ASCAP, and the International Country Music Conference. It was cited by the Chicago Tribune in 2004 as one of the nation's Top 20 magazines in any category. The magazine's cofounders and coeditors, Grant Alden and Peter Blackstock, continue to guide the bookazine. The magazine's senior writers and contributors remain on board to shape the tone and voice of the bookazine, and its distinctive graphic design imprint continues in the hands of ND art director Grant Alden.

Book Sudden Influence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael A. Rousell
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2007-04-30
  • ISBN : 0313087628
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book Sudden Influence written by Michael A. Rousell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us, writes psychologist Michael Rousell, are subject to Spontaneous Influence Events, (SIEs), when seemingly minor moments have truly life-changing effects. Rousell, who has studied such events across decades, shows us how SIEs—which occur when we are emotionally charged—trigger an intense response and activate a mental state of extreme suggestibility. He explains how SIEs disarm our instinctive defense mechanisms and rational thinking processes, leaving us open to instant adoption of new beliefs. In this unique book, he looks at the neurobiology of this spontaneous change. He details how we can recognize Elevated Suggestibility States or teachable moments, then use that knowledge to create positive SIEs for ourselves and those we love. And he explains how we can undo the damage of negative SIEs that may be haunting us, holding us back, or hurting us. Songwriter Carly Simon recalls an emotionally intense high school episode when her boyfriend referred to her stammer as charming. Simon regards that moment as a turning point for her self-esteem, and so her future. Other celebrities share similar, seemingly minor moments with truly life-changing effects. Tennis champion Venus Williams recalls one of her sister's pep talks when her words changed my life. Basketball star Shaquille O'Neal credits an offhand remark by his mother as the words that changed everything for me. All three cases illustrate a Spontaneous Influence Event, or SIE. In this book, psychologist Michael Rousell, who has studied such events across decades, shows us how SIEs—which occur when we are emotionally charged—do occur for most of us, for better or worse. These events trigger an intense emotional response and activate a mental state of extreme suggestibility. There is thus fertile ground for statements about our worth, abilities, and potential to be implanted solidly in our minds, leading to success or failure, often without our completely comprehending the effect and why it occurred. Rousell explains how the sudden impact of these SIEs disarms our instinctive defense mechanisms and rational thinking processes, leaving us open to instant adoption of new beliefs. In this unique book, he looks at the neurobiology of this spontaneous change, why the events occur, how to defend against the negative among them, and how to manage or promote positive SIEs. He also explains, through common vignettes, how and why the brain encodes SIEs to be triggered again and again in memory at later dates. Finally, Rousell details how we can recognize Elevated Suggestibility States or teachable moments, then use that knowledge to create positive SIEs for ourselves and those we love. And he explains how we can undo the damage of negative SIEs that may be haunting us, holding us back, or hurting us.
