Book excerpt: Bridget LaForge and her sister, Kalin, face many new challenges and dangers when they are forced to leave France to live with their grandfather in America. Their mother a famous Paris designer has left them to search for their father, a soldier missing somewhere in France. Except for one mysterious stranger, they must travel all alone. When six-year-old Kalin refuses to leave the house without an old, dusty chest belonging to her mother, it is the mysterious stranger who packs it and takes it along. Upon arrival in New York, the sisters are welcomed into a huge, gated mansion to be introduced to their grandfather, who is extremely relieved to have his granddaughters finally in his care. Bridget, only 15 years old, is also relieved because she has kept her sister free from harm, as she promised her mother so long ago. She also knows they may never have made it if it weren't for the mysterious stranger, the guardian appointed by their mother in her absence. Kalin loves her grandfather and his wonderful house, but when she cannot find the chest, she begins to frantically worry. She searches behind doors and into closets until she discovers a stairway at the back of the house. As soft singing and familiar noises begin to drift down the stairs, she makes her way to the top of the house and a very large, dark attic. As she rushes toward the chest to rescue the little fairies she believes are locked inside, a long narrow object floats toward the floor. "At first glance, it looked like a giant silver needle surrounded by yards and yards of silver thread." At second glance, she saw an extremely thin lady surrounded by long silver hair. "Her eyes glowed like giant gems, like blue-green glass." Kalin has just met the magnificent Ms. Needles, and will soon discover The Spool Sisters, Red and Yellow, Marie, Queen of Pin Cushions, and all the magical characters of The Thread Chest. They are instant friends and promise to keep the family safe and together forever; but who is the mysterious stranger?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Methods in Molecular Medicine series is intended as a resource for both novice and experienced investigators attempting to diversify their tech- logical base in research. Lung Cancer: Volume 1: Molecular Pathology Me- ods and Reviews presents an overview of the current status of assays employed to detect and characterize the multitude of pathologies that contribute to the development of this deadly disease. As with all volumes in the Methods in Molecular Medicine series, the reader should find that each methods-based chapter provides clear instructions for the performance of various protocols, supplemented by additional technical notes that provide valuable insight. These notes are designed to enable the reader to acquire the techniques described with a proficiency not easily achieved by re- ing standard method formats. No volume can exhaustively cover every aspect of biological research and there will be gaps in this endeavor that one or another research group will id- tify. Each section herein could readily be expanded into a book in its own right. However, I have sought to include a spectrum of techniques that should allow for the acquisition of key skills in each area covered.

Book Indigenous Forest Management In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands India

Download or read book Indigenous Forest Management In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands India written by Kavita Arora and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an extensive study of indigenous communities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, and their methods of forest conservation, along with an exploration of the impact of forestry operations in the islands and the wide scale damage they have incurred on both the land and the people. Through an in-depth analysis of the contrasting indigenous practices and governmental forestry schemes, the author has compared the modern ‘Joint Forest Management’ resolution with the ethos and practices of the indigenous people of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Throughout the book, readers will learn about the different indigenous communities inhabiting these islands and the treasure of knowledge each of them provide on forest conservation. The book establishes that the notion of knowledge is politicized by the dominant culture in the context of Andaman’s forest tribes, and traces how this denial of the existence of indigenous knowledge by government officials has led to reduced forest area in the region. The book also explores and analyses strategies to utilize and conserve the tribes' profound knowledge of the biodiversity of the islands and study their efforts towards forest conservation, protection and rejuvenation.

Book excerpt: BASED ON A TRUE STORY In a land occupied by foreign powers and torn by confusion and conflict, a mother seeks to weave her family and her past into a fabric that will not tear. Their Lives Were Woven by Wars and Wilderness Places, and Tied by the Peace of Family and Faith. As the 1840s bring conflict to the Pacific Northwest’s rugged Columbia Country, new challenges face Marie Dorion Venier Toupin: the wife, mother, and Ioway Indian woman who crossed the Rocky Mountains with the Astor Expedition, the first big fur trapping expedition after Lewis and Clark’s. On French Prairie in the newly forming Oregon Territory, Marie strives to meet the needs of her conflict-ridden neighbors: British settlers and Americans, missionaries and disease-stricken natives, fur trappers and French Canadian farming families, and the surviving natives of the region. At the same time, as a mother, Marie must weave together the threads of an unraveling family. One daughter compares and judges as she seeks to find her place; another reaches for elusive evidence of her mother’s love. Marie’s memories are threatened with the emergence of a figure from the past. In the midst of this turmoil, Marie discovers an empowering spiritual truth: Unconditional love can shed light on even the darkest places in the heart.
