Book Stages of the Path and the Oral Transmission

Download or read book Stages of the Path and the Oral Transmission written by and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 939 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume contains works from two of the most important sets of teachings of the Geluk School, the stages of the path (lam rim) and the oral transmission (snyan brgyud), which includes mahāmudrā. The stages of the path present a systematic, step-by-step cultivation of the Buddhist path to enlightenment using key elements distilled from the scriptures and Indian treatises. Following Tsongkhapa's (1357-1419) composition of his magnum opus, the Great Treatise of the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, the stages of the path became an integral component of the teachings of the Geluk school. The oral transmission originates in important oral instructions of Tsongkhapa, especially those that evolved from his visions of Mañjuśrī. The present volume is divided into four parts. Part 1 contains some of the central texts of the stages of the path instructions, such as the two root verses by Tsongkhapa, Gomchen Ngawang Drakpa's (fifteenth century) Stages of the Path in Verse, Panchen Losang Chögyen's (1570-1662) Easy Path, and the Fifth Dalai Lama's (1617-82) Sacred Words of Mañjuśrī. Part 2 features the Seventh Dalai Lama's guide to the Hundred Deities of Tushita Guru Yoga, Panchen Losang Chögyen's Offering to the Guru, and Jadrel Tsultrim Nyima's Sending the Final Testament through the Winds. Part 3 contains Panchen Losang Chögyen's mahāmudrā root text Highway of the Conquerors together with its commentary, as well as important texts by Yongzin Yeshé Gyaltsen and Shar Kalden Gyatso. The final section contains two concise works of essential oral advice from Ngulchu Dharmabhadra"--

Book The Planting Design Handbook

Download or read book The Planting Design Handbook written by and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition was published in 1992, Nick Robinson's The Planting Design Handbook has been widely used as a definitive text on landscape architecture courses throughout the world. It examines the horticultural, ecological and aesthetic characteristics of plants, discusses the structural and decorative roles of planting, spatial composition, species selection, planting plans and spacing, and the vital role of management. With its fresh look at aesthetic principles and its analysis of the design process, it reveals how a systematic approach can allow the greatest freedom for the creative imagination. This revised second edition still provides a complete examination of both the principles and the practice of design with plants, for public, institutional and private landscapes, taking account of developments in professional practice and reflecting a variety of media and approaches currently used. It incorporates conceptual design approaches to planting, a range of design methods as well as tried and tested analytical and objective procedures, and a wide range of new international examples of planting design. The ecological basis for planting design has been broadened to include examples from warm temperate and subtropical vegetation types as well as those of the cool temperate and Mediterranean climate area. The layout of the book is clear and spacious, with colour illustrations. While retaining the beautiful and detailed line drawings of the Chinese architect and painter Jia-Hua Wu, it includes an international range of new photographs and professional drawings, updated since the second edition. These illustrate a range of media now effective and useful in professional practices of various sizes.

Book Crafting a Collection

Download or read book Crafting a Collection written by Anna Shields and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Compiled in 940 at the court of the kingdom of Shu, the Huajian ji is the earliest extant collection of song lyrics by literati poets. The collection has traditionally been studied as the precursor to the lyrics of the Song dynasty, or in terms of what it contributed to the later development of the genre. But scholars have rarely examined the work as an anthology, and have more often focused on the work of individual poets and their respective contributions to the genre. In this book, Anna Shields examines the influence of court culture on the creation of the anthology and the significance of imitation and convention in its lyrics. Shields suggests that by considering the Huajian ji only in terms of its contributions to a later “model,” we unnecessarily limit ourselves to a single literary form, and risk overlooking the broader influence of Tang culture on the Huajian ji. By illuminating the historical and literary contexts of the anthology, the author aims to situate the Huajian ji within larger questions of Chinese literary history, particularly the influence of cultural forces on the emergence of genres and the development of romantic literature."

Book Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots

Download or read book Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots written by Jessica Soffer and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A troubled teen turns to cooking lessons to win her emotionally distant mother’s love in this “moving [and] extraordinary” novel (The Atlantic). Lorca spends her life poring over cookbooks to earn the love of her distracted, angry mother, a prominent Manhattan chef who left Lorca’s father and is now packing her off to boarding school. Desperate to prove herself, Lorca resolves to track down the recipe for her mother’s ideal meal. She signs up for cooking lessons from Victoria, an Iraqi-Jewish immigrant profoundly shaken by her husband’s death. Soon these two develop a deeper bond while their concoctions—cardamom pistachio cookies, baklava, and masgouf—bake in Victoria’s kitchen. But their individual endeavors force a reckoning with the past, the future, and the truth—whatever it might be. “Sassy, brash, acrobatic and colorful…I want to read it again and again.” —Time “Impressive…Soffer’s style is natural and assured.”—Meg Wolitzer, All Things Considered, NPR “Breathtaking…a profoundly redemptive story about loss, self-discovery, and acceptance.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Soffer’s prose is as controlled as it is fresh, as incisive as it is musical.” —Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World Spin
