Book Public Speaking

Download or read book Public Speaking written by Donald Hayworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Speaking For some time the amount of public speaking offered by colleges and universities has been increasing, and at the same time both the skill of teaching and our knowledge of the field have likewise been developing. New researches have been made; many facts and theories in psychology have been found useful; and by threshing out various problems in conventions and speech publications we have grown in wisdom. This textbook has been prepared in the belief that from these sources it is possible to add considerable new information to those well-tried principles that have been accumulating since the time of Aristotle. We must also face the fact that a discipline as old as ours is likely to become burdened with much questionable material. By applying the caustic of vigorous skepticism to the dogma of our field, an attempt has been made to keep this presentation sufficiently conservative and essentially sound. This textbook has been designed to cover completely the theory of public speaking. But since the theory of public speaking is not as significant to the student as the practice of principles involved, it is thought that the student should be given all possible assistance in putting theory into practice. For this reason particular attention has been given the exercises, not only in attempting to provide more exercise material, but in attempting to find the best type of exercise to accomplish the desired pedagogical purpose. Moreover, the exercises are frequently interspersed with textual material in order that the student will link theory and practice closely together. No effort has been made to force the material into compliance with the dogmas or terminology of any particular psychological sect. Surely there are truths to be found in psychoanalysis, behaviorism, gestaltism, and introspective psychology. Sophisticates in psychological parlance may wonder at the use of "response" and "consciousness" in the same chapter. Excerpt: ... first steps in public speaking. chapter I. preparation of the address. This Tvork consists of two distinct fields, language and thought. Each should to a certain extent be pursued by itself, yet neither can advance far without the other. Language without thought is the empty husk without the kernel, and thought without language is nude and cannot be handled. As everyone has some words--some language--to start with, we will consider first, the thought or matter of the address. Theme. The first step in preparation of thought or matter of an address is the selection of a theme. This must be chosen with care. 1. Knowledge. Choose a theme about which you know something and can know more. You may be able to say something about intemperance, but nothing about ambition, fame, or spirit. You may have easy access to facts on the first theme, while no access to facts on others. Law: You must know before you can say. You cannot pour wine out of an empty jug. f 2. Interest. Young speakers frequently make the mistake of taking a theme about which they care nothing. They choose from show rather than from interest, and in this, violate a fundamental law of oratory, feeling. Feeling gives warmth and flexibility to the faculties, and, consequently, they seize and tighten round the subject as they could not if cold. 3. A theme should be well defined or bounded. It may sometimes be so loosely stated that the speaker has but little idea of what he is to do. A single word has great power in enlarging or in contracting a theme; as, all men are mortal, some men are mortal, are very different themes. Again, gold is always a blessing; gold is usually a blessing; gold in the hands of good men is a blessing. Therefore, the study of the e
