Book Number Theory in the Spirit of Ramanujan

Download or read book Number Theory in the Spirit of Ramanujan written by Bruce C. Berndt and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramanujan is recognized as one of the great number theorists of the twentieth century. Here now is the first book to provide an introduction to his work in number theory. Most of Ramanujan's work in number theory arose out of $q$-series and theta functions. This book provides an introduction to these two important subjects and to some of the topics in number theory that are inextricably intertwined with them, including the theory of partitions, sums of squares and triangular numbers, and the Ramanujan tau function. The majority of the results discussed here are originally due to Ramanujan or were rediscovered by him. Ramanujan did not leave us proofs of the thousands of theorems he recorded in his notebooks, and so it cannot be claimed that many of the proofs given in this book are those found by Ramanujan. However, they are all in the spirit of his mathematics. The subjects examined in this book have a rich history dating back to Euler and Jacobi, and they continue to be focal points of contemporary mathematical research. Therefore, at the end of each of the seven chapters, Berndt discusses the results established in the chapter and places them in both historical and contemporary contexts. The book is suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students interested in number theory.

Book Combinatorics and Complexity of Partition Functions

Download or read book Combinatorics and Complexity of Partition Functions written by Alexander Barvinok and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Partition functions arise in combinatorics and related problems of statistical physics as they encode in a succinct way the combinatorial structure of complicated systems. The main focus of the book is on efficient ways to compute (approximate) various partition functions, such as permanents, hafnians and their higher-dimensional versions, graph and hypergraph matching polynomials, the independence polynomial of a graph and partition functions enumerating 0-1 and integer points in polyhedra, which allows one to make algorithmic advances in otherwise intractable problems. The book unifies various, often quite recent, results scattered in the literature, concentrating on the three main approaches: scaling, interpolation and correlation decay. The prerequisites include moderate amounts of real and complex analysis and linear algebra, making the book accessible to advanced math and physics undergraduates.

Book Partition of Unity Methods

Download or read book Partition of Unity Methods written by St¿phane Bordas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PARTITION OF UNITY METHODS Master the latest tool in computational mechanics with this brand-new resource from distinguished leaders in the field While it is the number one tool for computer aided design and engineering, the finite element method (FEM) has difficulties with discontinuities, singularities, and moving boundaries. Partition of unity methods addresses these challenges and is now increasingly implemented in commercially available software. Partition of Unity Methods delivers a detailed overview of its fundamentals, in particular the extended finite element method for applications in solving moving boundary problems. The distinguished academics and authors introduce the XFEM as a natural extension of the traditional finite element method (FEM), through straightforward one-dimensional examples which form the basis for the subsequent introduction of higher dimensional problems. This book allows readers to fully understand and utilize XFEM just as it becomes ever more crucial to industry practice. Partition of Unity Methods explores all essential topics on this key new technology, including: Coverage of the difficulties faced by the finite element method and the impetus behind the development of XFEM The basics of the finite element method, with discussions of finite element formulation of linear elasticity and the calculation of the force vector An introduction to the fundamentals of enrichment A revisitation of the partition of unity enrichment A description of the geometry of enrichment features, with discussions of level sets for stationary interfaces Application of XFEM to bio-film, gradient theories, and three dimensional crack propagation Perfect for researchers and postdoctoral candidates working in the field of computational mechanics, Partition of Unity Methods also has a place in the libraries of senior undergraduate and graduate students working in the field. Finite element and CFD analysts and developers in private industry will also greatly benefit from this book.

Book Partition Problems in Topology

Download or read book Partition Problems in Topology written by Stevo Todorcevic and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents results on the case of the Ramsey problem for the uncountable: When does a partition of a square of an uncountable set have an uncountable homogeneous set? This problem most frequently appears in areas of general topology, measure theory, and functional analysis. Building on his solution of one of the two most basic partition problems in general topology, the ``S-space problem,'' the author has unified most of the existing results on the subject and made many improvements and simplifications. The first eight sections of the book require basic knowldege of naive set theory at the level of a first year graduate or advanced undergraduate student. The book may also be of interest to the exclusively set-theoretic reader, for it provides an excellent introduction to the subject of forcing axioms of set theory, such as Martin's axiom and the Proper forcing axiom.

Book Generalized Partitions and New Ideas on Number Theory and Smarandache Sequences

Download or read book Generalized Partitions and New Ideas on Number Theory and Smarandache Sequences written by Amarnath Murthy and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florentin Smarandache is an incredible source of ideas, only some of which are mathematical in nature. Amarnath Murthy has published a large number of papers in the broad area of Smarandache Notions, which are math problems whose origin can be traced to Smarandache. This book is an edited version of many of those papers, most of which appeared in Smarandache Notions Journal, and more information about SNJ is available at http://www.gallup.unm.edu/~smarandache/ . The topics covered are very broad, although there are two main themes under which most of the material can be classified. A Smarandache Partition Function is an operation where a set or number is split into pieces and together they make up the original object. For example, a Smarandache Repeatable Reciprocal partition of unity is a set of natural numbers where the sum of the reciprocals is one. The first chapter of the book deals with various types of partitions and their properties and partitions also appear in some of the later sections. The second main theme is a set of sequences defined using various properties. For example, the Smarandache n2n sequence is formed by concatenating a natural number and its double in that order. Once a sequence is defined, then some properties of the sequence are examined. A common exploration is to ask how many primes are in the sequence or a slight modification of the sequence. The final chapter is a collection of problems that did not seem to be a precise fit in either of the previous two categories. For example, for any number d, is it possible to find a perfect square that has digit sum d? While many results are proven, a large number of problems are left open, leaving a great deal of room for further exploration.

Book Partitioning In Aqueous Two Phase System

Download or read book Partitioning In Aqueous Two Phase System written by Harry Walter and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Partitioning in Aqueous Two-Phase Systems: Theory, Methods, Uses, and Applications to Biotechnology is a collection of papers that discusses the applications of aqueous two-phase systems to problems of separation and extraction of macromolecules, organelles, and cells. Papers focus on the theoretical basis and the practical details of the procedures used. Some of the papers describe in one or a few steps how two components can be separated by the investigator manipulating their partitions so that one component is in one phase and the other component is in the other phase or at the interface. Investigators can also avail of developed batch extractions for plant organelles, cell membranes, nucleic acids, and proteins. The book cites as an example the partitioning of right-side-out and inside-out vesicles (obtained from fragments of thylakoid membranes) to the top and bottom phases, respectively, of a Dx-PEG system. Other papers describe the use of the countercurrent distribution when single extraction steps are not sufficient to produce a separation in materials that do not differ greatly in their partitioning behavior. The collection can prove valuable for bio-chemists, cellular biologists, micro-biologists, and developmental biologists.
