Book The Theory of Oil Tankship Rates

Download or read book The Theory of Oil Tankship Rates written by Zenon S. Zannetos and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Oil Tankship Rates: An Economic Analysis of Tankship Operations This study is based on my doctoral dissertation and subsequent related research that I conducted in the area of tankship transportation economics. The essential characteristics of the tankship markets, and the factors that influence the behavior of tanker owners and tanker charterers, have not changed since 1959 when I submitted the dissertation to the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Intervening events provided further evidence that the conclusions reached then are based on fundamental interrelationships of general applicability and which can stand the test of time. My interest in the area of tankship rate formation started in the spring of 1956, and was stimulated by Professor Morris A. Adelman who became chairman of my thesis committee. To him, and Professors Charles P.Kindleberger and Robert M. Solow, the other members of the committee, I wish to express my great appreciation for their guidance. To those who assisted me with the original manuscript I once again acknowledge my gratitude. In particular I wish to thank Professor Gordon Shillinglaw, now at Columbia University, and Miss Miriam Sherburne of the Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who offered helpful criticism and suggestions on organization and form. The Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology supported part of the cost of data collection and processing with a grant from the Sloan Research Funds, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Computation Center allotted computer time to my research project for many statistical calculations and tests. To those responsible for this aid go my sincere thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Theory and Ocean: Transportation of Oil The subject of this presentatien is economic theory and oil transportation by otean going vessels. I must at the outset admit that it is very pretentious for anyone to even attempt a topic such as this, let alone to be all encompassing, given the breadth and depth of economic theory. So I will limit myself to certain aspects of economic behavior as these aspects affect the supply and demand of ocean transportation capacity and eventually determine tanker rates. As for the latter, I will attempt to cover both Spot and period rates, within, of course, the scope of the economic issues with which I will be dealing. This volume evaluates and ranks a wide variety of tank ship hull designs proposed by experts around the world. Based on extensive research and studies, the book explores the implications of our rising demand for petroleum and increase in tanker operations; U.S. government regulations and U.S. Coast Guard policies regarding designs for new tank vessel construction; how new ship design would affect crew safety, maintenance, inspection, and other technical issues; the prospects for retrofitting existing tankers to reduce the risk of oil spills; and more. The conclusions and recommendations will be particularly important to maritime safety regulators in the United States and abroad; naval architects; ship operators and engineers; and officials in the petroleum, shipping, and marine insurance industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume in a new Springer Series on Shipping and Transport Logistics, Oil Transport Management provides a full historical account of the evolution of the oil transport industry since the 1800's. In this comprehensive guide, the authors investigate the industry and describe the shipping market and its structure, as well as forecasting, location plan and the transportation chain. They dedicate a separate chapter to each topic to cover various concepts, including: an introduction to the tanker shipping market, including how the freight, new vessel building, second hand and demolition markets influence one another, the economic structure and organization of the tanker industry in both the past and present, and forecasting the need for oil-based sea transportation. Further chapters present case studies and simulations to illustrate the importance of factory location decisions and the need for oil infrastructure investments. Chapter One also includes a regression equation to predict the fleet size in tanker shipping. Oil Transport Management is a key reference, which can be practically applied to wider global research and practices. Ideal for both industry practitioners, and researchers and students of shipping studies, Oil Transport Management provides a concise yet comprehensive coverage of the oil transport industry's history and a guide for its future development.

Book Oil in the Sea III

Download or read book Oil in the Sea III written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-03-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1970s, experts have recognized that petroleum pollutants were being discharged in marine waters worldwide, from oil spills, vessel operations, and land-based sources. Public attention to oil spills has forced improvements. Still, a considerable amount of oil is discharged yearly into sensitive coastal environments. Oil in the Sea provides the best available estimate of oil pollutant discharge into marine waters, including an evaluation of the methods for assessing petroleum load and a discussion about the concerns these loads represent. Featuring close-up looks at the Exxon Valdez spill and other notable events, the book identifies important research questions and makes recommendations for better analysis ofâ€"and more effective measures againstâ€"pollutant discharge. The book discusses: Inputâ€"where the discharges come from, including the role of two-stroke engines used on recreational craft. Behavior or fateâ€"how oil is affected by processes such as evaporation as it moves through the marine environment. Effectsâ€"what we know about the effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on marine organisms and ecosystems. Providing a needed update on a problem of international importance, this book will be of interest to energy policy makers, industry officials and managers, engineers and researchers, and advocates for the marine environment.
