Book Socialist Investment Cycles

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Peter J. D. Wiles Professor Emeritus University of London There are two sorts of writers of prefaces: the obliging and the disobliging. Surely Peter MiMlyi knows where to place me in this taxonomy. For the most part I write my own irrelevant opinions, but there was one act of gross interference: my insistence on a point he had already quietly made, the greater stability of the production of consumer goods under Communism even of food, if we exclude bad harvests. The many Marxist and some other scholars who wrote about Dr. Mih

Book Cycles and Stagnation in Socialist Economies

Download or read book Cycles and Stagnation in Socialist Economies written by András Simonovits and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1992 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Central and Eastern Europe the future of the socialist economic system is being called sharply into question. This book represents an extension and consolidation of the programme of work begun by Janos Kornai in Growth, Shortage and Efficiency and examines the causes of the macroeconomic problems embedded in centrally planned economies which now face their reformers. Andras Simonovits asks three key questions: Why and how did investment activity fluctuate in the sixties? Why did the growth rate decelerate in the seventies? What was the reason for the stagnation of the eighties? The author constructs a series of analytic mathematical models of cycles and slowdown to explore these questions. The first part of the book is devoted to the investment cycles of the East European socialist economies and the negative effect of long comletion times and high net import ratios. Part II models the slowdown and stagnation of the post-1973 period and in particular changes in the efficiency of investment and the terms of trade. The results point to the failure of the socialist economices to adapt quickly enough to falling investment effectiveness and rising debt. Andras Simonovits rigorous and wide-ranging study is an important contribution to the literature on socialist economies and will do much to inform the debate over their transition.

Book Capitalism Socialism and Democracy

Download or read book Capitalism Socialism and Democracy written by Joseph A. Schumpeter and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1950 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy remains one of the greatest works of social theory written this century. When it first appeared the New English Weekly predicted that for the next five to ten years it will cetainly remain a work with which no one who professes any degree of information on sociology or economics can afford to be unacquainted.' Fifty years on, this prediction seems a little understated. Why has the work endured so well? Schumpeter's contention that the seeds of capitalism's decline were internal, and his equal and opposite hostility to centralist socialism have perplexed, engaged and infuriated readers since the book's publication. By refusing to become an advocate for either position Schumpeter was able both to make his own great and original contribution and to clear the way for a more balanced consideration of the most important social movements of his and our time.

Book Economics of Socialism

Download or read book Economics of Socialism written by J. Wilczynski and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-08 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1970, Economics of Socialism covers all aspects of socialist economics: planning, profit, production and growth, investment, consumption, labor and land. The author then goes on to discuss pricing, money and banking, fiscal policy and control, and both domestic and foreign trade and international economic cooperation. The book is introduced by a background chapter on the socialist economic system, models of the socialist economy, the reforms, and the new socialist economics. It ends with a singularly objective comparison of socialist and capitalist economies and seeks to answer the question of whether the two systems are indeed converging. The book is based on socialist sources published in the Eastern European countries, which Professor Wilczynski has studied in the original, and which he is able to interpret against a first-hand knowledge of the countries concerned. He also provides a considerable apparatus which will be useful to students: a full glossary of socialist economic terms and extensive references for further reading in English. This is an interesting historical reference work for scholars and researchers of Soviet economics and Russian economics.

Book The Economics of Socialism After World War Two

Download or read book The Economics of Socialism After World War Two written by John W. Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive and contemporary source available on socialist economic systems, this book employs economic data from eight East European countries and Russia to provide readers with a thorough, accurate picture of formerly Communist economies. J. Wilczynski carefully analyzes the major focal points of socialistic economics: planning and market, profit, production and growth, accumulation, consumption, labor, land, pricing, money and banking, fiscal policy and control, domestic and foreign trade, and international economics. The treatment of the subject is objective and constructive; when comparisons are made with capitalist economies both the strengths and weaknesses of socialism are brought out. This is not, however, a book on comparative economic systems but rather a complete discourse on the actual principles of socialist economics. Controversial issues such as the role of planning and the market, profit, rates of growth, the consumer's place, labor incentives, pricing, and controls are particularly well done. This book can be used as a guide to the economics of formerly communist regimes and as text for courses in developmental economics and comparative economic systems. It is well written by a scholar intimate with the plans, policies, and failures of communist economies from the close of The Second World War to the demise of Communist rule in Eastern Europe.

Book Socialist Planning

Download or read book Socialist Planning written by Michael Ellman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socialist planning played an enormous role in the economic and political history of the twentieth century. Beginning in the USSR it spread round the world. It influenced economic institutions and economic policy in countries as varied as Bulgaria, USA, China, Japan, India, Poland and France. How did it work? What were its weaknesses and strengths? What is its legacy for the twenty-first century? Now in its third edition, this textbook is fully updated to cover the findings of the period since the collapse of the USSR. It provides an overview of socialist planning, explains the underlying theory and its limitations, looks at its implementation in various sectors of the economy, and places developments in their historical context. A new chapter analyses how planning worked in the defence-industrial complex. This book is an ideal text for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in comparative economic systems and twentieth-century economic history.

Book Finding a Path for China s Rise

Download or read book Finding a Path for China s Rise written by Philippe Lionnet and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China is ever-present in debates on globalisation and ongoing power shifts. In a time of rising international tensions, understanding the interdependencies between China's course and the world economy is ever more important. Often, the economic reforms under Deng Xiaoping after 1978 are emphasised. They initiated dramatic changes in China's economy and contributed to its ascent as a world power. In contrast, less attention has been given to the context in which these reforms were implemented. Philippe Lionnet analyses important adjustments in China's agricultural, industrial and foreign trade policies in the course of the 1970s as well as their origins. He shows how policy experiments and their limits shaped the path of the socialist state.
